Nickel & Dime Boxes = Sore Legs

The Serramonte Mall Show made its final 2012 appearance this past weekend and there was no way I was going to miss it.  It's my favorite collectibles show of the year, because of the variety it has to offer.

Are you looking for cards?  Got 'em.  Toys?  Yup.  Comics?  Have those too.  Video games?  You know it!

And it's pretty big.  I can't say for sure... but I'd guess that there were at least 50 vendors with 100 to 150 tables.  It usually takes me two to three hours to walk the entire mall.  But I spent over four hours walking around and spending my hard earned money on Saturday.

I picked up a ton of cheap singles and one really cool addition to my collection.  Best of all... I actually spent less money than I anticipated.

Here's a peek at my purchases...

Purchase #1:  Max's Nickel Box $3

Remember Max's 10¢ bins?  Well... they're now known as the 5¢ bins.  Yup... that's a Buddy Bell rookie card for a nickel.

Purchase #2:  Max's Dime Box $4

And if you're familiar with Max, then you probably know his 2 for $1 top loaders.  Well... they're now 10 for $1.  Yep... another Buddy Bell rookie card.  This time it cost me a dime.

Purchase #3:  Max's Dollar Box $1

Is this piece of fabric fake?  Who cares?  It was a buck and I needed it for my Seahawks PC.

Purchase #4:  1982 and 1983 Granny Goose A's Team Sets $10

Two food issue team sets from my childhood = one happy camper.

Purchase #5:  Early 80's Mad Magazine Lot $2

My favorite magazine growing up?  Mad Magazine of course!  I should have bought a bunch for this price.  The previous owner kept these in amazing condition.

Purchase #6:  1988 Donruss A's Team Book $1

I had never seen these before... so I figured it was worth a dollar to check it out.  It contains 27 cards and a complete Stan Musial puzzle.   According to Beckett, there were five books produced:  Oakland A's, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and New York Mets.

Purchase #7:  Another Guy's Dime Box $4

Rookies, and oddballs, and beards, oh my!

Purchase #8:  See Tuesday's Post $25

I can't wait to show this off on Wednesday.  My buddy said I overpaid... and in terms of resell value he's right.  But here's the thing... I don't plan on selling it.  EVER!

Purchase #9:  Non-Sports Wax Lot $10

You should know by now... I have little self control when there's cheap non-sports wax packs sitting in front of me.  Forty packs for $10.  I couldn't pass it up.
Okay... time to plop myself down in front of the television, get ready for my two teams to face off, and start sorting through my nickel and dime box purchases.

Alright... it's time to let me have it.

What were my best and worst purchases?

I always get a kick out of hearing your thoughts and usually I have at least one regret in terms of my purchases.  But this time, I'm pretty happy with what I bought.  Yep... that includes the possible "fake" jersey card for a buck.

Happy Monday and sayonara!

40 packs for $10? That is OUTSTANDING! You made out like a bandit with that one - definitely my favorite purchase of yours.

I really liked pretty much everything you got this time around - I'm a nickel and dime guy myself in shops and at shows so I would've loved to dig through those boxes. But worst? I'm tied between the food sets and the A's book, probably just because I don't care much for the A's. Everything else (especially the Mad magazines too) was super awesome. Well done.

Don't see anything bad there at all, every single one was a great pickup!

As you might guess, I'm jealous of those nickel/dime boxes. That '66 Topps League Leaders card is an amazing nickel box find. Love the '80 Fidrych for a dime as well!

Great pick-ups! It pains me to see Clark rookie cards in the 10 cent bin. Awesome cards!

My fave of the bunch is probably the Galarraga RR for a 5 cent piece. Despite the fact my fave teams are division rivals in the Mets and their Canadian rivals with the Jays, I've found myself hunting through bins for interesting Expos cards as of late. I'd pick up that card even if it was in a dollar bin.

It should be noted that the packs are non-sports... but yeah, I'm pretty stoked. Some will go into my non-sports wax pack collection. But I can't wait to rip into the rest.

As for those A's set... if they were any other team, I would have passed on them ;-)

That '66 league leaders cards is one of those "cards w/character"... it's been used and abused, but I love it.

As for the Fidrych... I saw that card in the box and was stoked! It's one of my favorites in the lot.

I know... 10¢ for Larkin and The Thrill rookies? Oh how times have changed.

I remember paying much much more back in the 80's ;-)... figure it balances things out a little.

Three things standout for me - the MAD Magazine in excellent condition is a bargain. You can't even get NEW magazines for $2.

The Topps Indiana Jones card set is pretty cool, but I'm biased. The last one is the Nestle Cal Ripkin card - just looks great so bright and yummy 1980's food issue.

Nice stuff.

Glad to see someone else who appreciates vintage Mad Magazine issues. I know the guy who sold them to me. Hopefully he has a few left when I see him at the flea market.

Unfortunately... there's only one pack of Indiana Jones cards. I'm hoping it's a vintage one, but have a feeling it's of the Heritage variety.

And I found a handful of those Nestle cards. I thought it was cool that their backs look identical or almost identical to the regular issue set. Makes me want to hunt a complete set down on eBay.

I gotta say the nickel box purchases. If nickel boxes are in the Bay Area, then they should be in SoCal soon. Maybe they are already here. Next time that I am up North, I need to look into going to a card show.

Max is at most of the NoCal card shows and he keeps those boxes pretty well stocked. It's rare that I walk away without spending at least a couple of bucks worth of cards.

Love that TCMA Rollie card from Another Guy. It's one of the creepiest Rollie cards ever. He's like a pale pirate-clown.

Fuji,
The Seahawks got a gift last night. As in all games this year the officals are a JOKE! Now lets see what the Seahawks do with gift much better to be 2-1 then 1-2!

Loved the Granny Goose sets,a friend and I went to Granny Goose day at the A"s game August 82,they were giving away free granny goose sets to each ticket holder upon entrance ,well, there wasnt alot of quality control back then ,so we went to each entrance pretending to be entering for the first time ,we ended up with about 20 sets apiece .30 years later good to know they go for $5 haha .

LOL... I actually want to find a complete set. Would love to see what other Padres were included in that set.

Fuji said...

Yeah... I knew going into the game that one of my teams would be 2-1 and the other would be 1-2. So, I was rooting for both teams, but the end of the game was a total joke. And although I'm not surprised that the Seahawks are playing dumb, I wish they would just come out and thank the refs.

Holy smokes... I'm sure you could take it to the flea market and sell those for $5 all day long. You're sitting on a gold mine. I'm trying to track down a 1981 set right now.

Good luck on the 81,I seem to recall the Dave Revering was very hard to find for some reason.

Lol... I just found a completed sale on eBay. How much? $150! Looks like I won't be adding that to the collection anytime soon.

sports or non sports, that's still awesome. I wouldn't have been able to resist the allure of 40 rippable packs regardless of what they had inside.

I'll keep ya posted. I might find some time to open the boxes this weekend.
