Flea Market Finds #23: Wax Packs, Ticket Stubs, and another SLU

When: Sunday, September 9th
Where: Capitol Flea Market
What: Wax Packs, Ticket Stubs, & another SLU
How Much?: $8

I woke up an hour early, so I could get to the flea market, walk around, and be back home in time for the 10 o'clock NFL games.  My guess is that a lot of the vendors had the same idea, because the flea market was only about 70% of the size it usually is.

On the bright side... less vendors typically means less money spent.  And when all was said and done, I had spent more money on coffee, breakfast, and admission... than on my three purchases.

Purchase #1:  2007 Legends Non-Sport Box $4

If you're a regular reader of this blog, than you know I can't stay away from cheap non-sport wax packs.  I've purchased at least three of those damn 2009 World's Greatest Chase boxes ($5/box) that contain 16 packs.

Today, I grabbed a 2007 Legends box that's a much better bargain:  20 packs for $4.  I'll save the box break for a future post.  Keep your fingers crossed.

Purchase #2:  1991 Kenner SLU Headline Barry Sanders $3

I just can't stop buying these worthless pieces of plastic.  But I keep thinking "these figures once sold for $30 to $40" so $3 is a steal.  Then I remember how much these guys have dropped in value.  Oh well... it's a nice addition to my SLU collection.

Purchase #3:  San Francisco Playoff Ticket Stubs $1

Why do I need or want these?  I'm not a 49ers fan and I didn't attend any of these games.  But for a buck... who cares?  I'll probably take these back to the flea market and sell them at my table.

Okay, let's hear from all of you SLU collectors...

Will Kenner Starting Lineups ever be collectable again?  Or will they forever be paired with Beanie Babies and POGs?

Happy Monday everyone... and sayonara!

I don't think they ever will. I always wonder the same thing about Corinthian Headliners, but I don't think those are making a comeback either.

Lol... it's funny that you mentioned those Corinthian Headliners. I'll be writing a post about the final one in my collection in the upcoming weeks.

MY question is... how many of your readers remember POGs?

LOL... someone just blogged about POGs, so it was fresh in my mind. I know I owned a few in my time... ahh the memories.

I have a handful of SLUs including some of the ones that used to be highly sought after but I think their heyday is well behind us now though they do make a nice, cheap collectible for people who still collect players from the 80s and 90s. Once Todd McFarlane started making sports figures in such details it was only a matter of time for SLU.

And even McFarlane figures are slowly becoming less and less collectible... with the exception of some of the tough chase figures. A guy at the flea market I went to last week was selling his older variants for $6 each and his regular figures for $4. I would have bought some, but he didn't have any players or teams that I collected left.

I was teaching in an elementary school at the time and POGS were one of those 'things' that kids got into and then forgot about after a time. Snap bracelets, marbles, micro skateboard toys, and Pokemon cards were some of the others. I ended up with a drawer full of that junk.

Tech Decks & Pokemon cards? You're making my mouth water. Throw in a few Tamagochis (little virtual pet key chains) and we have enough blog material to last a few weeks. The latest thing to hit the middle schools are Rubik's Cubes. I guess there's a cycle for everything... hopefully that rings true for SLU's.

I get jealous everytime you post a SLU that you got for cheap! I wish someone would be the rights to Starting Lineup and create a small retro set. I'd be cool to see official Starting Lineups of Lebron, Pujols etc. Nothing beat SLU's to me, McFarlane's may be more detailed, but they just never really did it for me like SLU's did.

I completely agree... SLU's > McFarlane's for a few reasons:

A. Packaging - I love the cardboard backs.
B. Trading Card - I still collect the cards out of SLU's
C. Size - I can fit twice as many SLU's on my shelfs
