No Turning Back

The holiday break is coming to an end.  In about sixteen hours, I'll be standing in front of my students counting down the days until our next break (which takes place in February).

One of the things I was hoping to write about over the holidays was my decision to build the 2019 Topps Holiday Relic set.  I've commented on several of your blogs about my infatuation for the 2019 Topps Holiday card design and how disappointed I was to not be able to get my hands on any of the blasters.  But thanks to eBay, I was able to purchase a complete set of the base cards.

In addition to the base set, I was drawn to this year's memorabilia card design.  I decided to pick up a large lot of these relics on eBay which led me to picking up three more smaller lots.  In total, I have 45 of the 64 cards currently in my possession... and ten more are on their way or are sitting in COMC inventory.  That leaves me with nine cards to track down:

WHR-ABR Alex Bregman
WHR-AH Aaron Hicks
WHR-GS Gary Sanchez
WHR-JAR Jake Arrieta
WHR-JP Joc Pederson
WHR-NA Nolan Arenado
WHR-RA Ronald Acuna Jr.
WHR-RD Rafael Devers
WHR-SP Salvador Perez

I've gotta say I was much more motivated to complete this set back in early December.  It seems kinda funny trying to build a holiday themed set after the holiday season.  However I have almost $130 invested into this project, so there's no turning back now.

Just writing this out makes me cringe a little, but on the bright side, at least this total includes 20+ duplicate relics (some will be used in care packages) and two Fernando Tatis Jr. rookie cards for the collection.

Hopefully I'll be able to complete it over the next twelve months, so at the very least I'll be able to have a cool holiday post next December.

What about you?

Ever start to build a set, realize your heart wasn't in it, but figured it was too late to turn back?

C'mon.  Help me feel a little better and tell me I'm not alone.  :)

Happy Sunday and sayonara!

I think I'm pretty much at that point with Rookie Anthology and the 90ish rookie selection auto/relics which are technically base cards.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel that way about a lot of the sets I build. BTW..... I just picked up the Gary Sanchez relic yesterday. It will be in a post over the next week. If you got 20 relic dupes, let's trade!

It'll be a good looking set to finish, and shouldn't be too tough. You can do it!

I like the design of those relic cards: the way the jersey swatch forms the "bow" wrapping the gift. I didn't get my hands on any holiday blasters myself, but I wish you the best of luck in completing this set.

I like to buy lots like you did here, and then start making sets. When I get done with the set I sometimes think that I've got enough duplicates to make another one. Those on the instances when I tend to sputter out in making the set.

I have a Hicks that I'd be happy to get as far away from me as possible.

Half (or more) of my want list is in the category of "can't turn back now" type of collecting! I look forward to seeing the entire relic set when you finish it. I didn't buy any of the holiday themed cards but I do think they are kind of fun!

Man that Bellinger relic is sweet. It and a few of the sp's are the only Dodgers I still have on my want list from this year's Holiday. If I run across any more relics I'll yell at you. I traded quite a few away already.

Those are some nicely designed relics!

And you are not alone - I'm still going with my effort to compete the 2001 topps heritage set which I began when it was released, before I understood all the short prints

I've never been a true set builder, only the random one here and there. Haven't bought in on any of the holiday designs. That said, the 2019 issue is more appealing to me the the regular flagship design. Good luck on completion, and Happy New Year!

You're almost there! You can do it Fuji :) I'm feeling that way right now with my T206 Reds set build. I'm over half way there but I have a steep hill to climb with four hall of famer cards yet to acquire.

I am a fan of the holiday themed cards for sure. You got this, don’t give up. I am a bit that way with my Calbee set. Wondering how much I am going to have to pay for the last few cards in the set. Ugh.

I'm working on the Holiday set myself (actually have a post queued up later this week) and figured if I don't make a push to complete it soon, interest will start to wain. Good luck on the relics!

Matt, check my ft list over at TCDB. Username is GooseWayneX

I have a good many extra Holiday base in there.

I've got a lot of set wants that I don't even look at much any more. Most of them hockey. It's more of "where the heck am I going to see any more of these?" than lack of interest.

I have the Joc Peterson and I will send it your way so you can mark it off the list.

I have a couple sets where it was too late to turn back. I just finished the 2014 Archives set with the SPs which was a beast and I am feeling challenged by 1972 Topps - those dang high numbers!

Commishbob said...

Oh, absolutely! 1960 Leaf for starters. I like the cards but the high numbered second series is stupid expensive for a bunch of mostly nondescript players. But once I was committed to the first group I had to keep plugging away. I'm sure I'll never finish it.

Several times unfortunately. I think the last time I did this was with the 2017 Topps set. I started and stopped a few times. I also did it with trying to collecting all the 1998 Topps Tek variations of Ray Lankford. I started, probably had 70 out of the 90. I stopped though. Nearly impossible now.

I've had conflicting thoughts about my two graded sets, 2016 Donruss football, and 2018 Stadium Club baseball. I guess I'll just trudge through like you are with the Holiday set. Hope you're able to finish the set in time for that December post.

I think I was that way with the 1997 Action Packed Studs. But, still need that Emmitt somewhere lol

buckstorecards - that rookie anthology set you're building is quite impressive. you're going to need a super shoe box or two just to store all of the hits

johnnys trading spot - thanks for working out the trade for the sanchez. i'll add the freeman to the care package i'm building for you

the lost collector - i'll continue to scour ebay and comc for deals. there are tons of these out there, so it's more likely these will drop in value than rise

henry blanchette - yeah, i really like the overall design of the base cards and relics in this year's product. shame neither of us could get our hands on any blasters

runforekelloggs - totally understand. i found myself building a second set of vintage topps posters, because i bought a few lots.

section 36 - i have an extra pedroia. can you use it?

nachos grande - you are the set building master though. i'm always impressed with the number of sets you complete each year

lee hero - the bellinger was one of the first ones i picked up. i think he was part of the original lot i purchased

gcrl - oh man, i assume that's gonna be a toughie to complete with each passing year. best of luck

acrackedbat - thank julie! i really dig this year's holiday product. by far my favorite over the past few years

reds card collector - thanks. best of luck on finishing your t206 red set.

sumomenkoman - hope you're able to find the last few calbees for your set. are you building this year's set? or one from the past?

matt - lol. i completely cheated and just went out and bought a completed set. best of luck on your set. hope lee hero and you are able to help each other out

gca - i feel that way about a lot of the sets i'm building. i might target one or two sets in addition to this one though in 2020

arpsmith - thanks. i have a longoria (in a giant's uniform) relic from this set. can you use that?

commishbob - hopefully you'll find someone with a large lot of them at the houston tristar show this year. best of luck!

the snorting bull - oh man... that 1998 tek would be a killer challenge. if you have 70 out of the 90 designs that's pretty awesome.

chris - i can't imagine that i won't. there are plenty to be found on ebay and comc

sport card collectors - that action packed studs set is really cool. you'll get that emmitt one of these days.

johnnys trading spot - thanks for the offer, but i'm sending section 48 a pedroia for his hicks.
