Out of the Ordinary

A few years ago I made the executive decision to avoid sticker autographs.  Of course there are exceptions to every rule.  Sometimes there are people who don't have any certified, pack pulled on-card autographs out there.  Other times they do, but they're very rare or very expensive.

Last Sunday ended up winning an auction that contained this card for $16.26 (+ $3 shipping):

2011 Topps American Pie Autographs #APA-24

Susan Lucci is probably most famous for playing the role of Erica Kane on the soap opera All My Children from 1970 to 2011.  According to Beckett she only has five different certified autographs for collectors to pursue.

Now you might be wondering why I've been looking for an autograph card of a 72 year old retired soap opera actress.  Well... the answer is simpleAll My Children was my mother's favorite soap opera during the 70's and 80's.  She watched it religiously and I'd watch it with her whenever I stayed home from schoolSticker autograph or not... this card represents a connection between my mother, my childhood, and my hobby.

Another thing I've been purchasing lately that can definitely be classified as out of the ordinary are graded basketball rookie cards.  It's been over five years since I've followed basketball on a regular basis, but back in December, I bid and won this Kawhi Leonard graded rookie card on eBay for $10.50:

2011 SP Authentic #27

I only bid on it because I had already won a few graded baseball cards from the same seller and he offered free shipping on any additional purchases.  I started throwing low bids out and this was one of a handful that stuck.

Since then, I've added a few other graded basketball cards that I'll share in the near future.  I just wanted to post this card in honor of the Toronto Raptors winning their first NBA Championship.

My final out of the ordinary purchase was this Cade McNown autograph:

1999 UD Retro Inkredible #CM

This card popped up on my eBay search last weekend and I immediately sent the seller an offer of $6.50 (+ $3.50 shipping), which he or she immediately accepted.  The guy only won three games as a starter during his two years with the Chicago Bears.  Normally, I wouldn't even consider buying McNown's autograph... and if I did... I wouldn't pay more than a buck or two.  However McNown is one of two remaining cards I need for this set.

Well there you have it.  Three out of the ordinary purchases I've made... and the reasons for them.

What about you?

Have you made any out of the ordinary purchases for yourself lately?

If so... share them below.

Happy Saturday and sayonara!

all my children was the soap that my nanny and grandma watched in the late 70s/early 80s. i recall the ongoing saga of tom cudahy and erica to this day. as for an out of the ordinary purchase, i have a post going up later this week regarding that very subject!

Sometimes....you just have to get outside the box.

I bought some In The Game Vault hockey cards the other day, just because I like the idea that the checklist can't truly be known (stamped buybacks). And the purchase got bonus points because I had never heard of the players.

Not to be a downer or anything, but that Kawhi is not a rookie card. College cards are almost equivalent to minor league baseball cards, but lower, because the NBA does have a minor league...even though it doesn't get cards. Because of panini being stupid, Kawhi's rookie cards are in 2012-13 sets.

A Cad McNown auto? Interesting.
I haven't made any out of the ordinary purchases that could hold a candle to that Cade McNown card.

gcrl - you've got an excellent memory. don't remember the story line... but when i looked cudahy up on the internet, i remembered the character. looking forward to reading this out of the ordinary post

sg488 - are you a warriors fan? i didn't even know they made replica trophies. i'll have to search these up.

johnnys trading spot - yup. gotta mix things up from time to time.

david switzer - i just read about someone busting a box of this product. he pulled some really cool card. if they were a little bit cheaper (in the $30 to $40 price range), I'd buy a box.

billy kingsley - no downer buddy. i'm cool with this being a pre-rookie card.

sport card collectors - thanks! i'm sure my mom would have smiled if i showed her this card.

p-town tom - lol. outside of collectors who are building this set like me... i can't imagine anyone else wanting this card. well... maybe one of cade's family members.

I've really scaled back my card purchases lately, so not really. That's a cool Kawhi!

Oh wow, how am I just NOW learning that Kawhi Leonard went to SDSU?! As a fellow Aztec alum, I guess I should be even more happy for him and add him to the short list of basketball guys I collect.

Ha, love that Susan Lucci card and the backstory of why you bought it. My parents were both huge Coronation Street fans when I was a kid, not sure if there are any autographed cards of the actors in that....wait of course there are because nowadays everybody who is even the tiniest bit famous has a million cards of themselves!! Maybe someday I'll track some down (even though I've never watched the show myself) :)

Nothing out of the ordinary here lately with the move. I’m sure I’ll find some randomness is LA. I’m not a fan of sticker autos either.

Been doing so much trading lately that I haven't purchased any cards at all. But I did trade for some Tom & Jerry cards that I gave to my little nephew. I guess that's a little bit out of the ordinary.

the lost collector - i probably need to follow your lead... but i've got a card show coming up this weekend.

defgav - didn't notice that until you pointed it out ;)

sean - good luck finding coronation street cards. hadn't heard of the show until now, but it looks like it's huge. wikipedia states that the show average 8 million viewers per episode. that's a lot of people

path - domo arigato mr. roboto

gregory - they make tom & jerry cards? that's pretty cool.

hackenbush - hope you show them off on your blog.
