Against the Grain

Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon.  Amelia Earhardt was the first female to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by herself.  Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play in Major League Baseball.  Madeline Albright was the first female US Secretary of State.

All of these people are famous for their hard work and accomplishments, but let's face it... they're even more famous because they were "firsts".  That's because we as a society have always valued being first.  Think about it.  When you were a kid and would race your friends across the blacktop, did you want to be first or last?  When picking teams for sports, did you want to be chosen first?  When you're at a baseball game and arrive at the concession stands, have you ever celebrated being the last in line?

Well today's the last day of the month... and it's time to break tradition and start celebrating famous "lasts".

I'll continue with hockey. Last player to reach 200 points in a single season.
Wayne Gretzky, 215 in 1985-86. Probably the last time. Last time I saw someone post signed cards of both Greg Maddux and Ted Williams. Today. ;)

I was thinking of Gene Cernan, who recently passed away. The last man to walk on the moon.

Something about these sound so final. A few might be "the most recent", while others definitely closed the door behind them.

Hope we send some people to the moon again.

The goalie without the mask boggles my mind.

Love that Niekro auto.

Last person to write a comment for this post? Not me, Fuji hasn't replied to the comments yet :-)

hackenbush - yeah, some of those hockey records will never be broken. gretzky's 215 will never be broken (unless there are some major rule changes). it's been 2 decades since someone broke the 150 barrier.

john miller - thanks. the maddux was a huge addition to my pc.

commishbob - nice trivia. i've wanted to add a zimmer auto to my collection for quite some time now. as for allegre, that's a name i've not heard in a long time.

gcrl - yeah... a few players have come close, but marshall is the only man in mlb history with that under his belt.

adam kaningher - i hope we eventually make our way back to the moon. i'm sure at some point, some private corporation or country will decide it's worth it financially.

matthew scott - i know... it's insane that they used to stand in front of the net without a mask

steve - it's official. i have replied. will it be the final comment? only time will tell.
