Flavors of the Month

As we begin to head down the final stretch of the regular season, neither of my teams have anything of significance to play for.  But that doesn't mean I'm giving up on baseball.  There are still a bunch of things I search for when I watch my daily recaps.

Here are my Top 5:

#1:  Jose Altuve

2016 Topps Five Star Silver Signatures #FSSS-JA

If I could only check one box score a day, I'd look at the Astros to see how Altuve hit.  I'm hoping he'll be able to hang on to that .350 average for few more weeks, which would help his MVP case.

#2:  Giancarlo Stanton

2010 Topps Update Silk #US-50

I could care less that some people feel his home run pace is overrated.  Stanton is a beast and watching his home runs are entertaining.  It's gonna be tough, but I'm hoping he reaches at least #60.

#3:  Khris Davis

2017 Topps Chrome Refractor #149

Just about the only thing exciting is Oakland outside of the Athletics showcasing their young talent is watching Davis battle Judge to become the Athletics first home run champion in two decades.

#4:  Chris Sale

2016 Topps The Mint Franchise Auto #FA-CS

A few months ago I started a new project.  I'm trying to collect an autograph of every left-handed Cy Young Award winner.  It's going to be close between him and Kluber, but I'd love to add him to that collection.

#5:  Clayton Kershaw

2016 Gypsy Queen Autographs Orange GQA-CKE

What can I say?  I have a left-handed pitcher fetish and Kershaw is the best around.  It's sad, but there was a big part of me that was happy when he got the 1-0 win against my beloved Padres two weeks ago.  Don't get the wrong idea.  I'm a loyal Padres fan and was stoked to see them take the final three games in the series.

Okay your turn...

As we approach the end of the regular season, who are you keeping tabs on?

Happy Tuesday and sayonara!

I've definitely got my focus on the Twins as they try to hang on to the wild card. Mauer looks like he might stay above .300 for the first time in a few seasons, that would be a nice recovery after some down years.

I'm always a fan of the all-time leaderboards, too- so guys like Pujols, Ichiro, and if he's healthy, Beltre have my attention. Verlander is close to 200 Wins (next year), and Bartolo Colon is always entertaining.

There isn't a particular player for me. Things are dicey for my team, the Cubs. They play 11 games against the Cards and Brew Crew and go into tonight with a slim lead. That's what I'm focused on.

I have to say I'm keeping an eye on teams (like Cleveland and Arizona) more than specific players, but I have been checking in on players like Judge, Stanton, Scherzer, and Sale. Kershaw is one of my favorites as well. As for Jose Altuve...I was just thinking today that it wasn't too long ago my guy Dustin Pedroia was in the conversation as the league's best 2B. Not anymore. Altuve is twice as good as Pedey was at his peak.

Definitely checking to see if the Indians can reach 20 in a row, and how many beyond that if so. Also trying to see how many more young pitchers the Reds can use this year. I heard a statistic that they've used 31 different starting arms in the last two years. So that's fantastic.

Still keeping tabs on Luis Torrens, who played a whopping six games in the entire month of August.

Hmm...
I'd like to see if Cutch hits career HR #200 (obviously since I'm running my contest)
I love watching the Bs play in Boston (Betts, Bradley, Benny, and Boegarts). They just have a lot of flair and fun.
I know a lot of people are thinking Sale will finally get his Cy Young and I hate saying this because of your post, but I'm going to enjoy seeing Kluber keep up his torrid pace and win the Cy Young
Most importantly for me though is two players from the NL West that never seem to get enough National coverage (Goldy and Arenado). Both have had MVP caliber seasons in the past and barely get votes. One of them has to win it this year. No offense to Stanton's monster HR season.

Living and dying with my Brewers. And I surely do miss Krush. I really liked him as a Brewer.

brian - good luck! i'd much rather see the twins play in the postseason than the rangers or angels. my aunt and uncle are huge twins fans. it's one of the reasons i loved puckett so much. i'll start pulling for mauer too. would love to see him end the year with a .300 average

hackenbush - i pulled for the cubs last year and if it comes down to them and someone like the dodgers, i'll pull for them again. but this year, i'll be primarily rooting for those teams who have never won a series before.

chris - it's hard not to follow the indians right now. i'll be checking the progress of their game this am as they attempt to break oakland's al record. btw... i like pedroia too. as for altuve... he officially dipped under .350 for the first time since mid july. :(

jasongerman9 - me too. i'm so excited to follow today's game online. didn't know that about the reds... but wow that's a lot of starting pitchers

zippy zappy - the padres suck... and their catchers suck more. torrens has the opportunity if he steps up his game.

collecting cutch - i watched the b's blow out my a's. that wasn't that fun :( as for sale & kluber... i hope at the very least they battle it out til the end.

jedijeff - me too. although i'm bummed that my favorite player left and signed with toronto

matt prigge - best of luck with the brew crew. i wouldn't mind seeing your team represent the nl in the world series.

faith sandra - love spells? please, tell my awesome readers and me more.
