Flea Market Finds #53a: A Old/New Flea Market

When: Saturday, January 18th
Where:  Branham High School Flea Market
What:  A Pennant, Some 45's, And A SLU
How Much?:  $9

I've been meaning to head out to this flea market for a few months now, but I've just been too lazy.  Years ago, my old roommate and I went a few times.  It was pretty small and didn't leave a positive impression, so we eventually stopped going.  That's probably why I wasn't motivated to try it out again.

Anyways... it's a three day weekend for me, so I decided to give it a shot and I'm pretty glad I did.  I ended up making four purchases.  However I'm going to split it up into two posts to keep things at a reasonable length.

Purchase #1:  San Diego Padres Pennant $5

My first purchase was this cool, vintage San Diego Padres pennant that has 1969 stamped on it.  My buddy was asking $10 for it, but told me I could have it for $5.  Sounded good to me.  Now I just need to find a place to hang it.

Purchase #2:  Eight 45's $1

I pretty much wasted a dollar on this purchase, but at the time I just couldn't pass these 45's up.  They totally took me back to my childhood.  As you'll soon see... I listen to a wide range of music:

America - Sister Golden Hair

Jermaine Stewart - We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off

Elton John - Tiny Dancer

Men Without Hats - Safety Dance

Derek And The Dominos - Layla

Kenny Rogers - The Gambler

The Monkees - I'm A Believer

Kool And The Gang - Celebration

Purchase #3:  1989 Kenner Baseball Greats SLU Bench/Rose $3

My third and fourth purchases came from the same vendor who sold me the Burger Chef trays two months ago.  I started things off by grabbing this Pete Rose/Johnny Bench two pack.  The packaging was pretty heavily damaged, so I popped them open and added two new cards to my Kenner SLU card collection and two new SLU's to my shelf.

Here's a closer look:

I also picked up a handful of vintage Bowman baseball cards from this guy.  But I'll save that for tomorrow's post.

Happy Monday and sayonara!

Heck, I would've bought those SLUs for the two cards alone. Definitely some nice pickups there.

I really wish I had a year-round flea market around these parks, though the outdoor one I have is pretty good to me during the summer. Already starting to look forward to flea market season.

if you don't dance, well you're no friend of mine! Best video ever!

Nice pickups. I'm pretty sure I've got all those songs in my iTunes, so we must have pretty compatible taste in music!

Wow, those SLU's look something like the players they're supposed to represent. I didn't think that ever happened.

...Hold me closer, Tony Danza....

Some great music there. Not that the Safety Dance is one but I think it's the only one I've ever heard that contains the word "imbecile". I'll take Tiny Dancer and Layla for best songs. "I also picked up a handful of vintage Bowman baseball cards from this guy." Isn't that called burying the lead? Card tease!

Tiny Dancer is a great song. Love the Madman across the Water LP. It holds up 40 something years after it was out.

Side 1 is
Tiny Dancer
Levon
Razor Face
Madman Across the Water

Yeah... I actually like the cards more than the figures. I've built a pretty decent collection of Kenner SLU cards over the past few years.

Lol... love that song and the video.

It takes a brave man to admit he can appreciate Jermaine Stewart. Glad I'm not alone.

They're usually in the ballpark, but not exactly accurate. Although, I must admit... they did a pretty good job with Pete.

I felt like those Bowmans were worthy of their own post.

Had to go check... Razor Face is on the other side of the 45.

Really digging the vintage Padres pennant. Pennants are something I've wanted to collect and I do have a vintage New York Jets pennant, but I have a hard time finding a place for them.

By the way, I love the 45's. I am a fan of America, Elton John and Clapton, but my favorite of your pick up is I'm A Believer. Yes, I am a huge Monkees fan and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

I have the opening of "Layla" as the default ringtone on my phone, and I've got at least half of the 45s you picked up in my MP3 collection. (I've even got a soft spot for "The Safety Dance.")

The 45s and the SLU were great pickups. Now you have to look for a record player at the flea market to play those tunes!

The Pete Rose SLU is quite a cool piece, I liked it when they did figures that were outside of the normal batting/catching positions.
