Flea Market Finds #76: Better Than A Blaster

Like most bargain shoppers out there, my focus is getting the most bang for my buck.  And honestly, I can't remember the last time I broke even on a box break.  That's why in 2015, I'm hoping I can refrain from buying any wax boxes... especially blasters.

It's not going to be easy.  I've been addicted to busting wax packs for over three decades and I've told myself that I'd quit on numerous occasions.  But in the end... the 2.5" x 3.5" pieces of cardboard always lures me back.

In fact, last week I caught myself checking out blaster boxes at Target.  There were a few priced in the $12 range, but most of the decent stuff was $19.99.  Thankfully I had enough will power to walk away, because I turned around and used the $20 on my latest flea market find.

When:  Sunday, January 18th
Where:  Capitol Flea Market
What:  A Small Collection of Cards
How Much?:  $20

My favorite type of vendor are the people who are cleaning out their homes and trying to make a few bucks at the same time.  Since they're not "regulars", their stuff hasn't been picked through and if you come across the right person... they're willing to give you some great deals as long as you're willing to give their possessions a good home.

This past Sunday, I stumbled across a guy who fit the above description.

He had a bunch of boxes filled with sports cards ranging from 80's rookie cards to 90's inserts.  If I were to guess, he probably had around 1,000 singles spread out among eight to ten boxes.

I asked him how much he wanted for this 1997 Pinnacle Museum Collection Artist's Proof of Frank Thomas:

He flipped the card over... saw the $25 label... and said $5.  Before I could counteroffer, he told me he'd give me a good deal if I bought more.  I immediately started sifting though the boxes and after fifteen minutes or so, I had created a nice stack of singles plus a box full of Greg Maddux cards that I was interested in.

By this time, his booth was packed and he was selling things left and right.  Trying to save both of us time, I asked him how much he'd want for the full collection.  He got excited and asked me if I'd be willing to wait until things slowed down.  After fifteen minutes or so, he apologized and asked if I could come back in 30 minutes.

He set aside the collection and promised to hold them for me.  I went back after the 30 minutes had passed and he was still busy, so I continued to check in with him a few more times.  Finally after a couple of hours had passed things we had a chance to talk about his collection.

Each of us briefly described our collecting timelines and eventually got down to business.  He had no idea what he wanted for the collection, so I asked him if it was easier for me to just pick out cards I really wanted.  He liked the idea and I started looking for the stack I created earlier.

The stack contained about 15 top loaders filled with some baseball inserts, rookie cards, and parallels for my binders.  It included some pretty cool cards like these:

I mentally added everything up in my head and was prepared to offer him $10.  But before I had the chance, he told me to take the stack for $5.  He told me he was trying to wrap things up and just wanted to get out of there.

I handed over the five bucks, threw the cards in my backpack, and was getting ready to leave.  That's when he asked... "did you see anything else you wanted?".  I told him I saw a few things, but didn't want to keep him waiting.  He told me I had a few minutes, so I went to work.

Ten minutes later and fifteen dollars poorer, I found a bunch of football and hockey cards for my binders:

In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't walk away with the whole collection.  I probably would have spent too much money on cards I didn't need.  Instead I spent $20 on 192 hand picked cards... which is a lot more value than you'd find in your average blaster.

Best of all... this purchase allows me to have a few extra dollars to spend on dime box purchases at this weekend's card show at Serramonte Mall... where I'll hopefully have a chance to hang out and talk sports cards with Mr. Haverkamp and Brady (over @ Yadier Molina Baseball Cards).

Happy Thursday and sayonara!

Wallet Card Wednesday #1: Clownin' Around @ the Flea Market

This week... Tony met a new friend at the Branham Flea Market.  Meet scary clown kid:

The clown's name is Tommy... and he was the first (of four) in a series of children's circus plates produced in the early 80's.  He was on my buddy's dollar table waiting for a plate collector to adopt him.

Unfortunately... after sitting around two different flea markets last weekend, he still hasn't been purchased.  My buddy offered to give it to me, but there's no way I'd let Tommy into my home.

It's funny... I can remember seeing plate collections hanging on dining room and family room walls on more than one occasion as a kid.  I guess it was a 70's and 80's thing, because it's not as common nowadays.

However, I did adopt a few other items from my buddy's dollar table:

1996 Skins Game Brochure

1996 was the year Tiger turned professional and this brochure is from his first Skins Game appearance.  Fred Couples and Tom Watson dominated the event... leaving Tiger with only two skins. and John Daly skinless.

Diamond Dreams HC (Walter Iooss Photographs)

Walter Iooss is an awesome sports photographer whose work has been featured on numerous sports cards.  This book is filled with baseball photographs from the legendary photographer.  If you're a baseball fan and have an extra $5 laying around... you might want to consider picking up a copy for yourself.

1995 Amada Disney Holograms

Just like plates take me back to the 80's... holograms like these remind me of the 90's.  I've never seen these before, but they look cool and will make excellent additions to my non-sports insert collection.

Oh and before I forget... in addition to that stuff, my buddy also hooked me up with this autographed photo:

I've been a fan of Woodson for years and this is my first autograph of him.  He played a big role in the Lombardi Trophy returning to Green Bay a few years ago.  Thanks Mike for the cool collectibles.

Stay tuned... tomorrow I'll show off the only flea market purchase I made this past weekend.

Happy Wednesday and sayonara!

The Impossible Question

Today will be a monumental event in my personal sports history.  For the first time in the history of the NFL, my two favorite teams... the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks... will face off in the NFC Championship Game.

As expected, I've been asked numerous times over the past seven days... who do you want to win?

My response is it's an impossible question to answer.  Seriously... it's like asking a parent to pick which child they'd save from a burning house.

I completely understand that many fans out there think it's immoral for me to root for two teams, but that's how things played out when I was younger.  I've been a fan of both teams since Dickey and Zorn were tossing balls to Lofton and Largent.  Back then Seattle was in the AFC and there was order to my football fandom.  Then in 2002, the NFL realigned the league and the Hawks entered the NFC West.

Two favorite teams in the NFC.  Oh well... depending on your point of view, it's not exactly a terrible problem to have.  Yes... in a few hours one of my team's season will be over.  But the other will be headed down to Arizona.

Personally... I think the Hawks will win.  I've watched both of them play all year long and it comes down to this.  Green Bay has a better offense than Seattle, but the Hawks' defense is a lot better than the Packers' defense.  And the 12th Man definitely won't make things any easier for Green Bay.

That doesn't mean that I don't think the Packers have a chance.  It's the NFL and you can never count any team out... especially when that team has the best quarterback in the league slinging the ball around.

Actually... it would be an epic moment in Green Bay Packers' franchise history should my prediction be wrong.  Injured Aaron Rodgers marches the Green Bay Packers into CenturyLink against the best defense in the NFL and some of the loudest fans in the league... then emerges victorious.  It's the kind of story where legends are born.

Whatever the outcome... I just hope that neither team has any key injuries, both teams respect the game and their opponents, and hopefully there aren't any controversial calls by the officials.

What about you guys?  I know must of you guys are baseball fans... but...

Are you rooting for any of the four remaining football teams?

And do any of you have two favorite teams in the same sport?  Does one get more love than the other?

Okay... only a few more hours until the big game.  I hope all of you are enjoying your three day weekend.  Happy Sunday and sayonara!

Missing in Action

Hey everyone... I hope y'all are doing well and enjoying your week.  I'm back in the classroom and I'm as busy as I was before the holiday break creating PowerPoint presentations, writing lessons, grading projects, and preparing for end of the quarter report cards.  In addition to that... I've signed up for some "yoga" lessons (try to not judge too much) to help me get some exercise, while coping with stress I'm bringing home from work.

Anyways... I just wanted to let all of you know that I feel bad that I haven't been able to read everyone's posts and leave comments.  I truly miss reading about everyone's collections and talking' sports cards.  I'm especially bummed that I haven't been able to check out everyone's Wallet Game cards.

By the way... I haven't forgotten about everyone's care packages.  During my holiday break, I spent over five hours sifting through 5,000ct. boxes... in search of stuff for:

Wes @ Jaybarkerfan's Junk

Chris @ Diamond Cuts and Wax Stains

Johnny @ Johnny's Trading Spot

Dennis @ Too Many Verlanders

Comatoad @ Bleeding' Brown and Gold

Zippy Zappy @ Torren' Up Cards

Jim @ GCRL

Matt @ Bob Walk the Plank

Mr. Hoyle

and Woody @ CCW

I assure you that I'm like a Lannister... I always pay my debts.  So if you don't see your name in this post and I owe you cards, can you do me a favor and remind me in the comment section.

I'm slowly putting together everyone's packages.  I'm waiting on a few cards for Wes and Woody, but everyone else is pretty much ready to go.  I just need to find a few hours to get everything packaged up and shipped out.  I won't even begin to make any promises... but hopefully I'll find some time in the next week or so.

Oh... almost forgot.  Mr. Night Owl... I'll get your Dodgers shipped out the same day I get everyone else's packages in the mail.

In the meantime... I'll try to make things up to you and share Stacy with all of you:

Saturday Night Five: Wallet Game Gwynns

I'm a little late to the party... but you know what they say, "better late than never".  Last week defgav over at Baseball Card Breakdown introduced a baseball card game on his blog.

The rules are simple.  Pick a "double" from your collection that you're willing to sacrifice and carry it around with you in your wallet for a full year.  Take photos of it from time to time and share them on your blog.

And since it's a game, there's also a winner who might win "something".  How do you win?  Just be the person who submits the coolest, unedited photo.  Easy, right?

Heck the hardest part for me was choosing a card for my wallet.  I decided to follow defgav's lead and chose a Tony Gwynn for a couple of reasons:

#1 - He's my favorite athlete of all-time.
#2 - Over the years, I've accumulated an abundance of his doubles.

I immediately ran into a problem.  There were so many cool Gwynn's to choose from.  I narrowed it down to these five:

1989 Donruss #6

Donruss Diamond Kings have always been one of my favorite subsets.  Dick Perez did an amazing job capturing the top players from the 80's in his paintings.

2000 UD Ovation #38

What happens when you combine a baseball with an embossed baseball card?  You get 2000 UD Ovation.  Beautiful card with great "conversation piece" potential.

1999 Stadium Club #126

Everyone knows that Gwynn was one of the best contact hitters of his era.  But he was also a five time Gold Glove Award winner and this card did an excellent job capturing him in action.

1995 Skybox Emotion #187

I was addicted to Skybox Emotion products back in the mid 90's.  It started with their basketball release and eventually carried on to their baseball and hockey lines.  Each card was printed on thicker than usual card stock and featured a word that captured or symbolized each player's emotion.  Skybox nailed it with Gwynn's word, because #19 was well known for being a student of the game.

1987 Topps #530

And rounding out my list is his 1987 Topps card, which made the final five for a couple of reasons.  I love the photograph Topps decided to use on this card.  But more importantly... 1987 was the year I made the switch from "collector" to "investor".  Sort of a cardboard collecting rite of passage.

In case you're wondering... I have since transitioned back to "collector" status.

The decision was tough, but in the end I went with the 1995 Skybox Emotion:

A big part of my life is my job and since I spend a lot of time in front of the classroom... this "scholar" would have plenty of photo ops throughout the year.

The Scholar's first appearance...

1st Staff Meeting of 2015

It's a shame that the first time Gwynn was exposed to my school, he had to sit through one hour of "blah, blah, blah".  And to make matters worse... I discovered that he already has a major crease running down the right side.  Oh well... it's not called the "top loader" or "screw down" game.  It's the Wallet Card Game.

Well that's it for now.  Thanks defgav for inspiring so many bloggers to do something together.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's photos throughout the year.

Happy Saturday and sayonara!
