When you think of Saturday mornings... what's the first thing that you think of? Nine out of ten times, I'll probably say the flea market. But back when I was a kid, Saturday mornings were reserved for cartoons.
I don't have any cartoon related cards to show off this morning, but Stuart over at S.R. '75 Cards sent me a package this week that included three singles from the 1993 Cardtoons set. I'd figure I'd share them and a recent eBay purchase that's semi-related.
Cardtoons was a product that makes fun of MLB players from that era. Although the players aren't actually named on the cards, based on the ones I've seen... it's pretty easy to figure out who they were parodying.
Let's start off with Tony Twynn:
1993 Cardtoons #76
Or should I say Mr. Pea Pods?
Cardtoons targeted Gwynn's weight, but at least mentioned that he had already won a batting title in his career.
Stuart also included cards of Rickey Henderson and Mark McGwire too:
1993 Cardtoons #35
1993 Cardtoons #44
Next up is a deck of cards I recently purchased on eBay:
2004 The Real Deal John Kerry Presidential Deck
I stumbled across this deck of cards a while back, while searching for a card of Barack Obama who happens to be included:
Even though I didn't see eye to eye with everything President Obama did during his two terms, I admire the way he carries himself as a leader. That's why I quietly collect his (and Ronald Reagan's) cards. Technically this isn't a trading card, but it's still a cool collectible.
Here are a few other notables in Kerry's deck:
I even found a new addition to my Japanese PC:
Matsui was a congressman for California's 5th congressional district which is located in the northern San Joaquin Valley. Unfortunately he passed away in 2005 after being reelected for the 7th time in 2004.
Sorry... let's focus on happy stuff since Saturday mornings are supposed to be bright and chippy.
What were some of your favorite Saturday morning cartoons?
I was actually more into the live action shows like Land of the Lost and The Baseball Bunch, but I do remember looking forward to watching Super Friends.
Well that's it for today. By the time you're reading this, I'll be walking around the De Anza Flea Market. It's a holiday weekend, so I'm not sure if there will be a lot of vendors set up. I'll write up a post if I find anything cool. Until then...
Happy Saturday and sayonara!

I think my very favorite was Schoolhouse Rock. It wasn't a show with its own timeslot, but we really looked forward to those on Saturday mornings. Super Friends was definitely a favorite, along with live-action Saturday morning superhero stuff such as Shazam and even Electra Woman and Dyna Girl from the HR Pufnstuff show. Was the Wacky Races on Saturday mornings? Loved that one too.
I don’t really remember which cartoons were on during Saturday mornings. Probably Yogi Bear, Looney Tunes, Tennessee Tuxedo, Danger Mouse and such.
Out of those, probably Looney Tunes was the best (and anything with Bugs, Roadrunner, or Daffy was good).
Favorite cartoons that may or may not have been on during Saturday mornings are Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold, Angry Beavers, and Tiny Toons.
Most of the time I was outside and not watching t.v., but I did spend some Saturday's watching t.v. usually afternoon stuff like the creature feature double features with Dr. Paul Bearer while at a friends house.
Saturday morning cartoons here too. Mine was more Bugs Bunny and Road Runner. My grandparents had Nickelodeon so watched that most Saturday mornings…
Dick Dastardly,Globetrotters and it wasn't a cartoon but it was a Saturday morning show, H.R. Pufnstuf.
The Bill Clinton card would have been better if he was holding Monica haha
Looney Tunes and Wacky Races were my favorites. There were others I enjoyed also.
Superfriends was the best! Every so often there was Plastic Man too, maybe another super hero one? Schoolhouse Rock of course
Yes that is what I think of for Saturday mornings. We used to watch The Rocky and Bullwinkle show and they had other skits cartoons, Dudley do right, Boris and Natasha. Super friends was a good one too. They also had Scholastic Rock and I remember some of the tunes they would sing as a learning tool. I remember one called, 3 it's a magic number. Also back during those Saturday mornings remember all the tv commercials for all the toys?? Now I see no tv commercials for toys. Under Dog we watched too and H.R. Puff 'N Stuff that was a funny show but not a cartoon but it was on during the Saturday cartoons.
We didn't have a TV when I was a kid so Saturday morning cartoons were something I only got as a treat when I stayed at my grandmother's house. Didn't watch enough to develop a favorite since they were all a treat.
And nice deck of cards. Agreed that they're not trading cards but they've very clearly occupied a similar space for over a century. This one has reminded me that for some reason I haven't gotten a DiFi card for the binder yet.
brett alan - forgot about schoolhouse rock. i still remember some of their songs like "i'm just a bill" and "conjunction junction". i liked wacky races too.
jeremya1um - i watched a lot of looney tunes and yogi bear as a kid. i think shows like hey arnold came along after my cartoon days
johnnys trading spot - yeah, kids spent a lot more time outside when i was a kid too. but saturday mornings were reserved for cartoons (unless we had a 9am little league game).
uncle charlie's shoebox - by the time nickelodeon became popular in my area, i'm pretty sure i was already in high school and college. but i do remember watching doug and rugrats every now and then
sg488 - i remember dick dastardly from wacky races. i might have watched the globetrotters cartoon as well. don't remember h.r. pufnstuf, but you're the second person to comment on that show
matt - i wonder if there's any monica cards out there.
rj sahl - i feel like looney tunes is the popular choice among card bloggers, but wacky races is right behind. i remember watching both.
pennysylvania tiger - good call on plastic man. some of the other guest characters i remember were apache chief, el dorado, and samurai.
rr - loved the rocky and bullwinkle show. and i totally remember all of the toy commercials during saturday mornings. good times.
nick vossbrink - there was a time when i only had access to one tv in the house (the other tv was in my parents bedroom), so if anyone else was watching tv... i had zero say in what was on. however my dad was usually golfing or working on something in the garage on the weekends. my mom was usually busy doing something around the house on saturday mornings. and my siblings were sleeping in or doing something else, so i got to watch my saturday morning cartoons. as for the difi card, if you want this one it's yours. just email me your address as a reminder and i'll pwe it to you.
Looks like I'm late to the party. I like this theme! For one thing I'd eyed the Fisk cardtoon card but eventually skipped it because I a fight is one thing but don't need some card of someone getting permanently injured, anyways... on a funner note, I can relate to most of the cartoon shows mentioned. Good nostalgia. My favorite was easily Scooby Doo.
