Lady In Red

Cards, movies, and music have a special way of summoning feelings of nostalgia.  That's why this card was my top pick when Gregory over at Nine Pockets held a giveaway for one of his customs:

2023 Nine Pockets Custom #3

This card took me back to the early 80's when all of my friends were talking about Fast Times at Ridgemont High at recess.  I don't think I ever saw this in the theaters, but I definitely saw it a ton of times when it came out on VHS and cable.

It's one of my favorite movies from that era.  The soundtrack featured a bunch of big names but four songs stood out to me.  And when I hear them, I can picture the scenes they were played in...

#1We Got The Beat by The Go-Go's

This song is playing in the opening scene with shots of all of them main characters in the mall.

#2Somebody's Baby by Jackson Browne

When Stacy hooks up with the stereo guy in the baseball dugout... this song is playing in the background.

#3Kashmir by Led Zeppelin

Rat asks Damone for dating advice... and he suggests this playing this song.  I might not be a huge Led Zeppelin fan, but I really like this song.

And of course....

#4Moving in Stereo by The Cars

If you've seen the movie, you know.  If you haven't, you should.  Iconic movie scene featuring the lady in red.... that has to be one of the most paused in history.

I've had a lot of celebrity crushes over the years, but Phoebe Cates has to be in the Top 5.  She has a handful of cards out there.  I picked up a few of them...

1984 Topps Gremlins #56

1984 Topps Gremlins #81

1984 Topps Gremlins #75

1984 Topps Gremlins #8

Getting back to Gregory's custom, here's a peek at the back...

He listed some key numbers including the release date, running time, and box office gross.

Thank you Gregory for this awesome addition to my Phoebe Cates collection.

You did a great job recreating the 1963 Topps League Leader card:

Now I just need to dig out my VHS copy of Fast Times and relive all of the classic lines from Spicoli, Damone, and Mr. Hand.

Happy Friday and sayonara!

Yet another opportunity to mention that Phoebe and I share a birthday!

I received my copy as well yesterday. Although I enjoyed the movie a lot when it came out (and we all quoted it senior year), some of it doesn't exactly hold up well.

As a long time Led Zep fan the it always bothered me that the quote from Damone was Led Zep iv side one, well Kashmir is from Physical Graffitti.

Yep, crushed on her too after that film.

That's an extremely well-done custom by Gregory! And FTARH was a great movie, though I wouldn't see it until much later. Great sound track too, and yes, Phoebe Cates was a babe!

Hard to believe that movie only made $27 million!

I had been going to say the same thing as sg488, but I'll speculate a bit - is that a mistake in the movie or is Rat too clueless to use the right song/album? Love the custom

"Most paused scene in movie history". You might be correct there, Fuji! I enjoyed this post. Always fun to read something written with such enthusiasm and nostalgia.

gcrl - i use that line with my students all the time.

night owl - i have to go back and watch it. i just remember that there are a ton of great lines.

sg488 - i remember learning about that mistake in high school when i was looking for the led zeppelin album with kashmir

johnnys trading spot - pretty sure every single one of my buddies did too.

dennis - i've said this before, but it's a good thing i don't have the skills that some of these bloggers do b/c i'd sit around making customs all day long. gregory did an amazing job

poison75 - props to mr. hand for handling it perfectly. i can only hope i'm that sly if one of my students tries to pull that on me :D

brett alan - i know. that number is even more shocking when you realize that et brought in over 400 million that year in the states and almost 800 million worldwide.

shlabotnik report - i'm gonna guess it was damone being clueless, but that's a great question.

gregory - i looked it up. the sharon stone basic instinct scene is supposedly the most paused scene in movie history. can't argue with that :D

Finally saw Fast Times this year. Somehow, I just never got around to it. I get why it has been so popular, but what a real downer of a movie.
