Another Weekend, Another Show

Last weekend, my buddy co-promoted his second show in three weeks.  Unfortunately it wasn't a card show.  This time around it was a toy show.  The good news is there were three dealers with sports cards and I made purchases from two of them.

Purchase #1A Shiny Admiral  $1

1998-99 Topps Chrome Refractor #170

My friend Tony, who was set up next to me at the card show was there and this time around I had the chance to dig through his dollar boxes.  That's where I found this David Robinson refractor.

I might not actively collect basketball cards, but I can't pass up a 90's refractor of a hall of famer for a buckCan't do it.

Purchase #2One Hot Bo  50¢

Tony is one of only a handful of dealers that actually lugs around bargain bins.  That's why his table was busy almost the whole time at the card show three weeks ago.  He doesn't have dime boxes, but he does have a 50¢ bin.  That's where I found this Bo Jackson insert:

1990 Score Hot Card #2

It's rare to come across a Junk Wax Era insert that I'm not familiar with, but this card fits that description.  I'm not going to say I've never seen it before, but I don't remember if I have.  According to Beckett, they were inserted into 100 card blister packs that contained both Series 1 & 2 1990 Score football cards.

It's from 1990, so I'm sure there are millions of these floating around... but that doesn't take anything away from the beauty of this card.  The rising (or setting) sun behind a well-cropped Bo with black borders combines well to form a hot looking card.

#3A Sportscaster Signature  $5

2004 Absolute Memorabilia Fans of the Game Gold Autograph #237

Have you ever seen a sportscaster running the 40 yard dash in a business suit?  If so, it was probably Rich Eisen.

My friend Tom specializes more in non-sports cards, but he has a couple of boxes of sports cards.  While killing time at the show, I decided to dig through his stuff and I found this card with an $11 price tag.  He said I could have it for five bucksSticker-graph or not... I can't pass up this card for that price.

Overall... I was pretty happy with my show purchases.  The third dealer had some dollar boxes, but I didn't find anything I could use.  I didn't go through his boxes until the last hour of the show, so chances are they were already picked through a few times.

Most of the show was spent collecting money from customers interested in purchasing a photo op or autograph from Giancarlo Esposito, who is famous for his roles in Do The Right Thing, Breaking Bad, and The Mandalorian.

Fans were getting him to sign everything from action figures to Darksabers to plastic money barrels.  But the most creative item I saw was a guy who had him sign a Jordan 4.  The gentleman was inspired by this famous scene in Do The Right Thing:

I truly wish I had thought of that.  Oh well.  I didn't walk away empty-handed.  As a thank you for helping out, my buddy Mike hooked me up with this signed Funko Pop:

I also asked him if he could get me a 16 x 20 photo signed by Esposito and David Acord:

Acord is a sound editor at Skywalker Sound and is the voice of Grogu.  He was also signing at the show, along with one other autograph guest. who is popular among Seinfeld fans...

If you don't recognize who this is... you're probably under the age of thirty.  If that's the case, do yourself a favor and watch this:

Thanks Mike for hooking me up with these very cool pop-culture autographs.  I also appreciate you hooking me up with the free table at the card show.

As for the rest of you, here are today's questions of the day...

What's your favorite Junk Wax Era card design?

Do you have a favorite sportscaster?

Do you have a favorite Spike Lee movie?

Are you a fan of Seinfeld?  Favorite character?

1.  I'll probably dedicate a post to answer the Junk Wax Era question.  For now... I'll just go with the 1987 Topps baseball design.

2.  My favorite sportscasters are Jon Miller and Tom TolbertMiller has a calm demeanor and knows his baseball trivia... while Tolbert sounds like a guy you'd want to hang out and barbecue with.

3.  Do The Right Thing is hands down my favorite Spike Lee film.

4.  Yup.  Right up there with Curb Your Enthusiasm, Eastbound & Down, Freaks and Geeks, and The OfficeFavorite character?  George Costanza.

Happy Wednesday and sayonara!

1. 1993 Leaf baseball for the backs, 1990-91 and 1991-92 Skybox basketball for the fronts. 1986 Donruss baseball, 1989 Fleer baseball, and 1989 Upper Deck baseball for the more "normal" look done well. I didn't pick a football set, so I'll go with 1993 Pacific for that sport.

2. Not really. I like Tracy Wolfson as a football sideline reporter.

3. I haven't seen most of his. Summer of Sam I guess.

4. Of course. I might have said George, but I'll go with Kramer now. I also liked Teri Hatcher's character for some reason.

Anyway, congrats on the autographs.

1. 1988 Topps. It's simple AND practical.
2. Dick Bremer (Minnesota Twins) broadcast booth.
3. I don't believe I have seen a Spike Lee movie yet. Not really big on movies.
4. George Costanza - "Jerry, just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it."

3 inside man, blackkklansman in addition to do the right thing. I ran in to spike in New York once and wish I had told him to “always, do the right thing”
4 I watched it for the full run but not in syndication. George by a mile

1. 1993 Upper Deck baseball or 1988 Topps baseball.
2. Not really. There are ones I like and ones I don't.
3. Nope.
4. Yes, of course. No real favorite character, it was an ensemble show. They all had their moments.

1. 1993 UD by lightyears.
2. I don't pay too much attention to announcers, but Jim Deshaies and Steve Stone are probably my current favorites. (All-time worst is Hawk Harrelson.)
3. I've only seen a few Spike Lee movies, and none of them light a candle to "Do The Right Thing."
4. My all-time favorite TV show! Can't really pick a favorite out of the main four, but Newman is my favorite minor character, and the Soup Nazi is probably my favorite one-off character. Very cool that he was at the toy show!

elliptical man - summer of sam was a great film. didn't realize it was a spike lee joint. had to look up wolfson. i can see why you like her

sg488 - i figured 1993 would receive a lot of love. i really liked costas back in the day when he was on hbo.

base card hero - love that costanza line. i feel like 88t is very polarizing. you either love it or hate it. i'm not a fan, but the hobby would be boring if everyone loved and hated the exact same things

johnnys trading spot - i really really really like the 1990 leaf set.

gcrl - 1991 topps is a good call. i especially love the photography for that set. vin scully is a legend. nice call.

night owl - kind of surprised at the amount of love 88t is receiving. not surprised that half of the people who have commented have mentioned 93ud

nick - 93ud is one of my favorite sets from the 90's... but to me it's more about the photography than design. i think my favorite minor character is puddy, but newman is up there

jongudmund - very happy to add it to my autographed pop collection.

1. Favorite junk wax set is 1991 Donruss, with 1987 Donruss a close runner up.

2. Favorite broadcaster would be Doc Emrick. I got back into hockey by heading him on NBC Sports.

Can’t really comment on Spike Lee or Seinfeld though.

1. 1993 Upper Deck or 1991 Topps

2. I grew up listening to Jack Buck, so I would go with him as my first. Mike Shannon, also a Cardinals announcer, is a fun listen, but mainly because he's a functional alcoholic who says crazy stuff in the middle of games. I have also really come to enjoy Patrick Kinas. He does the Durham Bulls games and the ACC women's basketball games locally. Patrick also works for NBC and does a lot of the Olympic Sporting events. Really underrated.

3. School Daze or the 1994 NBA Playoffs with Reggie Miller

4. Yes. Kramer by a mile.

Jafronius said...

1. Going with 87 Topps since that's what started by collecting career.
2. Going with Harry Caray since he was the broadcaster when I started paying attention to the Cubs and baseball.
3. Haven't watched enough joints to have an opinion.
4. Oh yeah! Great funko signature btw. Gotta go with Kramer for the main cast but there are so many awesome recurring characters.

matt - good news. eisen's autograph seems to be pretty cheap. you should be able to land one for less than the price of a blaster

adam - i like 87d. not the biggest fan of 91d though. it's not terrible. just not one of my faves. not familiar with doc emrick. gotta look him up.

the snorting bull - 91t and 93ud are both great sets. i've heard a lot of great things about jack buck over the years. not familiar with shannon or kinas though. i can see miller giving spike the choke sign

jafronius - 87t is a personal favorite. classic design. i love hearing caray's voice or people impersonating him. one of the best thing about seinfeld were all of the recurring characters.

kevin papoy - yeah... it was new to me too. best of luck tracking one down. it's a really attractive card.
