I Love Sorting Cards!

I'm one of those people who love to organize and sort things... which explains why I collect trading cards. When I was a kid, I'd plop myself in front of the television with a stack of cards and sort them into teams. A week later, I'd do the same thing... only this time I'd put them in numerical order. The next week? I'd sort them by players. My collection was constantly being manhandled and rearranged.

These days, I don't handle my cards as much as I used to. But every now and then, I still have the urge to sort & organize.

I recently traded my buddy a bunch of unopened wax boxes (3 boxes of 90/91 Pro Set Hockey, 3 boxes of 1991 Kayo Boxing, and 1 box of 90/91 Score Hockey), some 49ers team sets, and $10 for this box of singles:

The box provided me with over ninety minutes worth of entertainment as I sat in front of the television sorting the cards and deciding which cards I wanted to keep and which ones I was going to give away, sell, or trade..

When I was finished, there were little stacks of cardboard scattered across my family room and one small stack of around 30 cards that I planned on adding to my collection.

Here's a sample of what I pulled for myself...

Vintage Cards

90's Inserts

It would be impossible for me to pick my favorite vintage card, but I've already wrote about my favorite '90s insert.

My favorite vintage card probably would be the 1971 Joe Hague card. Why? Because it's pretty much my only vintage card I have. I got it from my good friend Will in a trade.

My favorite vintage card is my autographed 1978 Topps Record Breakers Nolan Ryan. Not in perfect condition by a long shot, but it has a great story on how it ended up in my collection.

My favorite is the Griffey You Crash the Game insert that I won when he hit a homer on the day mentioned on the redemption card. Mailed it in with a few bucks, waited 6-8 weeks, and OHMIGOODNESS it was awesome when it came in the mail. Looks like this - http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0acUbzoZS6o/Sz-3plXm6PI/AAAAAAAABpk/9Ml_Id4Ribc/s320/DSC06772.JPG

Second favorite might be the insert card of Griffey's that came with Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for the SNES. That one looks like this - http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0acUbzoZS6o/Sz-3koGqeYI/AAAAAAAABpc/jUVPb26yQWk/s320/DSC06778.JPG

Needless to say I was a huge Griffey fan as a kid.

My favorite vintage card is probably my 1976 Topps Jim Rice. I traded a 1984 Topps Darryl Strawberry for it in 1986. I did't know who the Strawberry guy was, but I knew I was getting an old Red Sox card. It had that old Topps rookie cup on it. Rice is in an old uniform. I didn't even care about the pinhole at the top. I had to have it. Of course, I then watched the value of the Strawberry go sky high and felt pretty foolish. Then the Strawberry crashed down, and I felt pretty smart. That's why you need to collect what you like. I was happy in the end.

My favorite vinatge is my 1963 Ray Nitschke rookie. My favorite 90's insert is one I pulled not too long ago. Bought a couple of 92 Donruss wax boxes for 5 bucks a piece and ended up pulling a Will Clark Elite numbered to 10,000.

Favorite vintage card -- favorite card of all-time -- is 1975 Topps Ron Cey. I've written about it over and over again, so I'll find like 10 links when I get a chance.

I have a 1965 Topps Steve Barber autographed card. It iw well loved to say the least. Probably in the worst condition of any card I have. I bought it on eBay last year, years after Barber's death.

I had already blogged about it here:

My favorite vintage cards is my 1962 Willie McCovey SP card. I love the 1962 design and finding a reasonably priced one was a great pick up. I got it on ebay and didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it.

My favorite vintage card is a 1967 Mantle - because I actually own it.

Hmmm, favorite insert from the 90's is tough. I'd have to go with the 1996 Ultra Season Crowns insert set.

1962 Topps Gaylord Perry rookie. It has the amazing portrait (one of Perry's better card photos) against the crisp blue background with the "star rookie" logo.

My favorite vintage card is definitely my 1969 Roger Maris. I got it just last March at a card shop when I went back to New York for the first time in 5 years. It was my first card from the 60's, my first vintage Yankees card and Maris is one of my favorite players of all time (gotta love the immortal legends who aren't enshrined in Cooperstown).

JediJeff said...

Favorite vintage is a easy call, and very simple to remember how I got it. In my first trade with the Troll, he dropped a 52 Bowman Billy Pierce on me. Said I was now entrusted to take care of him. It's an amazing card from a pretty decent dude.

90's insert. Hmmmm - I can't really say if I had one. While technically not an insert set (I think), I always liked that Pro Set hockey did ref and linesmen cards one year. Those are kinda inserty, aren't they?

Favorite vintage card for me 1982 Nolan Ryan .I traded my cuz for this card in 1990 I think i gave a David Justice rookie for it .Not the best card but still love it.

my favorite vintage card is the 1978 topps steve garvey card, which first entered my collection when i pulled it in a pack back in 1978. however, i don't really consider that to be vintage. so, my favorite pre-1970 card is my 1953 bowman color pee wee reese that i picked up for a reasonable price on ebay a while back.

I once had a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan rookie but I sold it long ago, that would be the favorite of all the cards I have ever owned. My more conventional favorite is an oldie but a goodie:

Hmm, no 90's inserts come to mind, so I'll go with vintage...it's the 1960 Topps Bob Gibson I have coming to me from last year's Topps Diamond Giveaway (at least I hope it's coming...it says it's backordered...wha?). I'll go with that for the pure shock value. I was not expecting to wind up with a vintage card of anyone important, and when I entered the code and looked up I had to do a double take...what the heck is Bob Gibson looking at me all angry-like...you mean I actually got this card?!??!?!?!?

Baseball Nut said...

Got to be my 1961 Topps Sandy Koufax. It is just the perfect combination of player, picture and design. It was one of those multi card for one card trades but I still think I got the better end of the deal.

I'd never seen that card before today... thanks for sharing. And wow... can't believe how pricey this card is.

Fuji said...

I'm a huge fan of 90's refractors myself... nice card.

Fuji said...

I've never heard of Mr. Hague... but that's pretty cool that it's a gift from a good friend.

Fuji said...

Cards with great stories behind them are the best.

Fuji said...

Wow... I need to add the Super Nintendo card to my collection. Very cool indeed.

Fuji said...

I'd make the trade for the Jim Rice all day long. I loved Rice growing up and the 1976 card is a beauty.

Fuji said...

Wow... I won't be able to afford the Nitschke RC, but I understand why that's your favorite. Actually I'd love to add the rookie card of any Packers legend to my collection.

As for the Clark... that's awesome that you beat the odds and pulled a Elite insert. Congratulations.

Fuji said...

I just did a search for Ron Cey on COMC and saw the 75 card... it's nice... but that 74 photo is pretty amazing too.

Fuji said...

I'm a huge fan of Stan Musial... nice card.

Fuji said...

Huge fan of beat up vintage cards... more wear & tear = more character!

Fuji said...

Wow... I hope people are taking time to read other people's posts. The two cards you shared are AWESOME!

Fuji said...

Huge fan of the woodies! Nice card.

Fuji said...

I definitely need to make it one of my goals to add a vintage Mantle to my collection...

As for the Ultra Season Crowns... can't argue with an acetate set from the 90's.

Fuji said...

It's weird seeing him so young in that portrait. I'm used to the gray hair, 1980's Perry look. Nice card.

Fuji said...

Nice card... but those kind words you gave to all of those bloggers were even nicer.

Fuji said...

I tried to find the 1969 Maris card, but only came across the World Series subset card. I'm a huge fan of those immortal legends who fall short of the HOF as well.

Fuji said...

Love cards that have collector ties to them. I definitely see why the Pierce is special to you.

As for those early Pro Set cards... I'm a huge fan of the designs and the fact that they added refs are nice bonuses.

Fuji said...

Wow... I never took the time to appreciate the 1982 Topps Nolan Ryan until you pointed it out. I've always liked the design, but that awesome looking photo is the icing on the cake. Nice card!

Fuji said...

Love the Ryan/Henderson SP card... in fact, I'm a fan of any Upper Deck SP inserts from the early 90's.

Fuji said...

Wow... that Mitchell card is pretty cool. I like the pose and the stadium in the back drop.

Lol... it's funny that you mention those Dream Team cards. I pulled them from a set break and have been trying to write a post about those cards... but I just can't seem to come up with an appropriate way to write about Canseco, Henderson, and Puckett topless.

Fuji said...

Very cool post. Love reading posts about how collectors got started.

Fuji said...

That Aaron/Mays card is a card that I will have to track down and purchase. As for the double sided McGwire refractor... that's pretty sweet too.

Fuji said...

Yep... won't be forgetting that name any time soon. Btw... love those Pro Visions too.

Fuji said...

Yeah... both sets are classic. If I had the funds, I'd definitely consider building the 1972 set.

Fuji said...

I just checked out the 1978 Topps Garvey... great pose and the overall look of the card is pretty sweet. Plus... the price is definitely right.

As for the Reese... that's a card for the ages. I'll never own one... but it sure is fun to stare at it's beauty.

Fuji said...

Great post... after seeing all of your other cards, I could see why the decision wasn't easy.

Fuji said...

Can't argue with that... love the TV set look.

Fuji said...

Tough choice between fold-out and a stick-um... decisions, decisions.

Fuji said...

I have no idea how this card has slipped my sights for 39 years... I must own this card!

Fuji said...

IMHO... greatest card ever produced!

Fuji said...

I have no choice but to give you extra credit for this post. Best of luck on winning those kitty cards... if I didn't live by the samurai code, I'd rig this contest so you could have that package.

Fuji said...

Wow... that Campanella is awesome!

Fuji said...

You had me at Pacific Prisms ;-)

Fuji said...

Wow... you scored big with that card. I had a few codes and came up with some commons from the 80's and 90's. Congratulations... and let's hope Topps rewards your patience with a high grade Gibson.

Fuji said...

It's funny how a blue sky in the background does wonders for a card's image. Great choice!
