TWIB: Childhood Crushes, Poetry, and Cereal Killers

It's been another busy week... at work, in sports, and in the blogosphere.  Don't worry, I'm not gonna be ranting about distance learning.  This post is purely focused on This Week in Blogging...

#1The Final Frontier

Star Trek has taken a back seat to Star Wars ever since my parents took me to see Luke Skywalker blow up the original Death Star back in 1977.  That being said, I grew up watching and enjoying the original Star Trek television show.

It's been sitting on my Netflix queue for several years, but there's always something else to binge watch on there.  But last Saturday, GCA showed off a few singles from his 1976 Topps Star Trek set and wrote about three episodes, including his favorite... The Tholian Web.  I finally had the chance to watch it this morning and it was awesomeThanks Greg for the suggestion.

Both of these William Shatner signatures were obtained at the 2016 Silicon Valley Comic Con by my buddy Mike.

#2Wonder Woman

If you're a fan of 70's and 80's television shows then I encourage you to click here and check out Gregory's gorgeous 1974 Topps All-Star customs that feature popular characters from that era.

One of them had Lou Ferrigno's Hulk and Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman.  I figured I'd use this opportunity to share a signed 8x10 I purchased back in 2017 on eBay.  Normally I avoid buying autographs that aren't certified by PSA, JSA, or BGS, but this signature looked good compared to certified signatures I found online.

Carter was one of my childhood crushes and as she approaches seventy years of age, she still looks wonderful.

#3Real Cardboard

1969 Topps #59

I'll accept just about any form of trading card into my collection, but that doesn't mean I believe all cards are created equally.  As much as I enjoy a shiny refractor from the 90's, I will always have a deeper appreciation for trading cards printed on real cardboard like the ones mentioned in Night Owl's post on Monday.

I decided to use my oldest copy of a Jay Johnstone card as an example of a piece of real cardboard that I treasure.  If you want to see more "real cardboard", click here.

1986 Topps #496

Sadly Night Owl's post is also where I learned that Mr. Johnstone passed away recently.  Rest in peace Moon Man.

#4Goodbye Gibson

1969 Topps #378

This morning I read the tragic news that Bob Gibson passed away yesterday.  He threw his final MLB pitch right around the same time I was turning three years old, so I obviously don't remember watching him play during his career.  But his legacy is one of those that transcends the 60's and 70'sBaseball fans of all ages know about him and the way he intimidated batters during his career.

1999 UD Century Legends Epic Signatures #BG

However based on the smiles on both of these baseball cards, you'd think he was the friendliest flamethrower in baseballRest in peace Gibby.

#5Ms. Jackson... If You're Nasty

Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989)
Janet (1993)

If you enjoy reading posts about music and/or you're a fan of 1991 Pro Set MusiCards... then you should definitely subscribe to Gavin's blog1991 MusiCards Blog.  The amount of research he puts into these post is truly impressive.  I enjoy reading them even when I'm not a huge fan of the featured artist.

This week, he wrote about Paula Abdul and how she is still one of his "guilty pleasures".  Personally, I prefer one of the artists she choreographed forJanet.  Or Ms. Jackson, if you're nasty.

#6Hobby Haiku

1999 Topps Gallery Autographs #GA3

Do you enjoy poetry?  How about baseball card related poetry?  If you answered "yes" to either of these questions click here.

I've learned some really cool trivia from Matt's haikusThis week he wrote about Eric Chavez who happens to be a fan favorite in my neck of the woods.

#7Pretty in Pink

2010 Japanese Idol Costume Card #01

Another week.  Another contest over on Collecting Cutch This week's challenge is to show off some "pink" cardboard on your blog.  If you do, leave a link to your blog post in the comment section of his contest post and you'll be in the running for a Babe Ruth seat relic card.  Yup.  He's giving away a Babe Ruth relic card.

2018 BBM True Heart #40

It's a good thing he's not giving the Ruth away to the blogger with the most "pink" cards.  If that was the case, you'd be hard pressed to take down Mr. Miller over at Johnny's Trading SpotDon't believe me?  Click here.

2017 BBM True Heart Autograph

By the way, a huge shout out to Kenny, Raz, and Ryan for providing the three "pink" cards for this post.

#8Cereal Killers

Rounding out this post are a few sketch cards I completely forgot about until I saw some really cool Wacky Packages featuring cereal boxes on Johnny's Trading Spot.  If you're a fan of Wacky Packages, make sure to subscribe to his blog, because he's always showing off some WP's on Wacky Wednesday.

These sketch cards aren't Wacky Packages.  They come from a Wax Eye product released back in 2011 called Cereal Killers featuring the artwork of Joe Simko.  I opened up a case of this stuff and pulled the four sketch cards seen here.

Well that wraps up another This Week in Blogging post.  Sorry this one ran a little longer than usual.  There were just too many cool posts to comment on.  In fact there were a few I had to scratch at the last second due to lack of time.

Here are today's questions of the day...

Star Wars or Star Trek?

Who was your childhood celebrity crush?

Paula or Janet?

What is you favorite cereal?

If you read this post, you know my responses to the first three questions.  As for my favorite cereal, right now I'm on a Cheerios kick.  But a few months ago, I was all about Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Happy Saturday and sayonara!

Star Wars
I don't know.
Why not both?
Reese's Puffs.

SumoMenkoMan said...

Star Trek for sure and childhood crush was Tami Stronach from The NeverEnding Story.

The Lost Collector said...

Neither
Kelly Kapowski
Paula
Count Chocula (but haven't had it in years!)

Brett Alan said...

I love both, but if I have to choose, Star Wars. Although the disaster that was Episode 9 certainly tests that. (OTOH, The Mandalorian is great.)

Kristy McNichol, like most guys my age.

Janet. I mean, Paula's OK.

Like you, I mix it up. Cinnamon Toast Crunch is relatively new in my rotation, but it's good. Multi-Grain Cheerios and Corn Pops are very good, but if I had to choose one, it might be Cap'n Crunch. I also love Cracked Wheat hot cereal, but no one seems to make it anymore.

Jeff Laws said...

I love Star Wars but I'm a Trekkie first.

Alyssa Milano on Who's the Boss (we're the same age), but Lynda Carter was definitely up there.

Definitely Janet.

Don't really have a favorite cereal, I switch it up all the time.

To make this short. I'm down with Lynda, Janet, Paula, and Yumi! I'm greedy that way. But there were plenty more.

night owl said...

A - Star Wars. It was more fun.
B- No idea. Marie from Sesame Street?
C - Paula's cuter, Janet has better songs
D - Captain Crunch w/Crunch Berries -- the original, before they started making the berries all different colors.

So much to comment about. Star Wars first but Star Trek is great. Tough to pick a favorite cereal though. so many. Also you continue to be my vintage bba news source. I didn’t know about Bob, I was just thinking about him last week.

elliptical man - i've seen the reese's cereal before, but have never bought it. maybe i'll give it a shot the next time i go grocery shopping

sumomenkoman - the never ending story is a great movie.

the lost collector - i was more into jessie spano :D

brett alan - the mandalorian is awesome. one of these days i'm going to watch episodes 7, 8, and 9 all in a row. i saw 9 in the theaters and it was okay

jeff laws - we must be the same age too, because milano is only a few months younger than me.

johnnys trading spot - nothing wrong with keeping it short and going with yumi

night owl - wow. i completely forgot about marie from sesame street. she actually might have been my very first crush. as for captain crunch, i love it. but i don't ever buy it, b/c it tears up the top of my mouth (i know i'm weird).

steve at 1975baseballcards.com - although the news is obviously sad, the blog tributes for gibson have been fantastic. i've learned a lot about him the past two days

jon - i'm going to watch the other two episodes that greg suggested, but i'm more of a TNG guy.

a cracked bat - pufnstuf? the giant yellow guy? lol. nice. a bowl of fruity pebbles sounds delicious. haven't bought any of that stuff in 20 or 30 years. and i love me some honey-nut cheerios.

Thanks for mentioning my blog, Fuji!

A) Not a big fan of either Star Wars or Star Trek.

B) One of my childhood crushes was actually Janet Jackson. It was that smile.

C) Also Janet.

D) Frosted Mini-Wheats.

Peter K Steinberg said...

Great cards as usual. Answers: Star Wars. Michelle Pfeiffer. Neither at the moment. My 1980s and early 1990s self was probably more Janet than Paula. Honey Nut Chex is ridiculous.

Commishbob said...

1) Star Trek!!! T Loved the original TV series and a few of the movies.

2) Diana Rigg who played Emma Peel on the original Avengers series.

3) Neither. Both attractive ladies but the music isn't in my wheelhouse.

4) Only cereal I eat now is Honey Nut Cheerios. Awhile back I had been on a Raisin Bran Crunch tear but I got burned out on the stuff. As a kid I was a Frosted Flakes guy but I liked quite a few others as well.

Star Wars by a hair--I'm a nerd for both

Erin Grey from Buck Rogers (oh, the lip gloss)

Paula for looks, Janet's music

Lucky Charms

Fuji said...

gregory - thank you for creating and showing off those awesome customs. frosted mini-wheats seem to have a cult-like following. i bought it once after someone suggested it and wasn't the biggest fan. on the other hand, janet does have a great smile

peter k steinberg - michelle pfeiffer is still beautiful. i'm assuming honey nut chex is ridiculously delicious

commishbob - had to look up rigg, but instantly recognized her from the avengers television series. didn't realize she was the same person who starred in game of thrones

todd uncommon - excellent call on erin grey. she was also on my list. as for lucky charms, i know i'm going to sound crazy... but i wish they sold that cereal without the marshmallows.

Matt said...

1. Star Wars
2. Kathy Ireland
3. Really a toss-up. I could switch choices depending on my daily mood
4. Not really a cereal eater, but I've always enjoyed graham crackers with milk!
Thanks for the plug!

My mum told me that when I was about 2 and a half I spun round and round in the living room and was very disappointed that I didn't turn into Wonder Woman.

Spyda-Man said...

Thanks for the heads up on the Ruth contest. I'll have to see what kind of "pink" Bo Jackson cards I may have so I can post them to my blog and participate!

GCA said...

1. Trek for sure. I've got uniforms and posters and all kinds of stuff.

2. Catherine Bach, Jaclyn Smith, Lynda Carter, etc.

3. I was way past teenhood for Paula and Janet. I'm a metal guy, but actually saw a Janet concert once and was impressed.

4. Love the Cap'n and this stuff called Quisp with the alien mascot. It came back for a while a year or two ago. I do the Seinfeld thing and keep 5 or 6 different kinds in stock. Only one or two are kid-targeted.

I love this series!!! It's fricking awesome how you recap a bunch of our posts and put your own spin on things. Loooooove it!!!

Thank you for the plug to my contest and month long event.

Star Wars over Trek, but truth be told neither get me going all that much.

Childhood crush...stay tuned to my blog over the course of the month, I will reveal soon.

Neither

Cereal of choice: Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Raisin Bran Crunch depending on my mood that day

Commishbob said...

She was in Game of Thrones?!?! I never saw any of that.

When I was on Twitter someone asked the same question and my answer got to her. I felt kind of like a creeper.

Fuji said...

commish - lol. hopefully she took it as a compliment :D

matt - i remember seeing kathy ireland in sport illustrated. she was part of the era when i was into cindy crawford too. granham crackers and milk? never tried it, but it sounds good

jongudmund - lol. awesome. gotta love moms and their memories

spyda-man - best of luck. the contest is for a great cause

gca - jaclyn smith is right up there with carter. actually... i'd rank smith higher. i wish my kitchen was large enough to house 5 or 6 kinds of cereal. that sounds awesome

collecting cutch - thanks. it's pretty much me just piggybacking off of you guys, while giving you all props and helping readers discover other great card blogs. thanks for the awesome contest. i've been seeing tons of posts and tons of comments. this has really taken off this year.
