When I Grow Up

When I was a kid, my entire school would get excited every time NASA would launch a space shuttle into orbit.  It seemed like every other teacher reminded us that we could grow up and become anything we wanted... even an astronaut.

I relay a similar message to my students, but I don't think I have ever used an astronaut as an example.  I mean... do children even dream of going into space anymore?  I can't remember the last time I heard one of my students say they wanted to grow up and become an astronaut.  I'm sure there are kids out there... but these days I mostly hear responses like "doctors", "fashion designers", "video game programmers", or "professional athletes".

Speaking of athletes... how about last night's game?  I was a little late to the party, but what I did manage to see was damn exciting.  Had that been Game 7, we probably would be talking about it for decades.

Unfortunately... it's still early and both teams have plenty of reasons to be confident.  As an A's and Padres fan, I'd like to see them battle it out and take it to Game 7 with the Astros and Jose Altuve eventually bringing Houston (home of the Johnson Space Center) their first World Series Championship.

Hopefully these three pieces of space shuttle memorabilia will bring a little mojo to them.

Happy Thursday and sayonara!

  1. That was one of the greatest postseason games I have ever seen.

  2. I'm not the biggest fan of non-baseball cards, but these are neat!

  3. I hope we can get moon rock relics one day. But in the meantime, cool space relics!

Personally I think it's good that some of your students aspire to be doctors, gives them a leg up professionally. Just make sure they know that the starting point isn't where you end up ;). After the doctorate is theirs, the world is theirs for the taking.

  4. hey will you send me your address so I can send you some Padres cards. my email is padrographs at live dot com

  5. Love the space relics. I've been a space fan for my whole life.

  6. I like how each relic piece looks unique instead of some standard white piece.

  7. Those relics are sweet! I have the wire one. It’s weird to think that part of one of the cards in your collection has actually been in space.

  8. Love that set. I also have the wiring one from SkyLab or something.

I am still blown away by the Gemini/Apollo space program. They looked up in the sky and said "Let's go THERE" and did it with pocket calculator tech. I was amazed recently by some tv shows that revealed what the latest few deep space satellites have seen of all the other planets. The space program has gone so under the regular news radar.

I've got a whole binder of Moon and Space card sets. I should go after some more of these relics too.

  9. Great cards. It's a shame that as a country we've seemed to have lost interest in space exploration. Maybe the recent solar eclipse inspired some kids.

  10. hi dear its very nice and very helpful post for those who are new and thinking to start a blog site.Your posts are very helpful and creative. I have atlast opened a blog site being inspired from your articles clik here and see about inverter

  11. Go Astros. I never wanted to be an astronaut but I did love their ice cream. Lol!

  12. I love me some space relics. Cool cards and a great collection. I’d love to see some moon rocks, but not sure that would ever happen. Those are national assets paid for by the taxpayer. For science and museums is there destiny.

  13. collecting cutch - totally agree. game 5 was insane too.

the lost collector - sometimes i wish i just focused on baseball cards. it'd make budgeting a lot easier

zippy happy - moon rock relics would be awesome. as for careers, i try to encourage them to choose a career they'll enjoy and be passionate about.

rod (padrographs) - email sent. reply with your address and i'll send some extra padres in your direction

billy kingsley - glad to see another space guy out there.

ketchupman36 - i know. if anything, it's something different to collect.

jeremya1um - i think the wire looking one is my favorite. the whole "authentic space flown" title is what caught my attention.

gca - it's truly mind blowing what mankind has done in such a short period of time. the fact that we sent a crew up to the moon and they returned home is crazy. and like you said... it was done using pocket calculator technology.

hackenbush - i hope so. that solar eclipse was really cool. i wish i had lived in an area where it got really dark though.

zahid - only my best friend calls me "dear"... and she only does it sarcastically.

collecting cutch - we went on a field trip somewhere and i tried their ice cream. it was okay, but i'd much rather have the real thing

sumomenkoman -moon rocks would be cool. maybe topps will just grab some pebbles from their parking lot, throw them into cards, and call them moon relics.
