Damaged Card HOF #3: Ruined Rice Rookie

1986 Topps #161

Creased.  Faded.  Rounded corners.  Chipped edges.  Does it get any better than this?

I recently purchased a binder of vintage football cards that contained some of the biggest names in gridiron history:  Terry Bradshaw, Walter Payton, Steve Largent, Sonny Jurgenson, Dick Butkus, Roger Staubach, Jim Otto, and Joe Namath.

But without a doubt, the Jerry Rice rookie card was the deciding factor in my purchase.  Don't get me wrong.  The other cards are excellent additions to my vintage binder of HOFers.  However... it's not often I add a card to my Damaged Card PC... especially one of this magnitude.

One of these days, I'll write up a Top 5 Damaged Card post and I'm pretty sure this card will be in it.

Happy Birthday Jerry!  Go Packers and Seahawks!  And have a happy Sunday!  Sayonara!

The most damaged card I have was damaged by me without notice. Still 'hurts' me everytime I look at it. But there is card love behind the creases, corner bends and fading photos.

What card is it? You should write up a post... I'd love to check it out. Damaged cards need lovin' too.

I love the love for the damaged card. They have a few more miles on them than the mint versions and chances are they were loved by someone a little too much!

Great add!

I own a lot of pricy cards...only due to the fact that they are damaged. They allow me to own iconic cards for fractions of the cost.

A tear formed in my eye when I saw it. That was the card to have of any wide receiver!

OMG! Fujisan,

This brought tears to my eyes. My collecting partner (My daughters boyfriend, Brett) normally gets my defected cards. I have even given him cards with autos that have been smeared by the signer as well. The most recent card was a 2012 Topps Platinum Auto RC T.Y. Hilton.

Over the years I compiled a bunch of damaged cards... and after awhile I realized that damaged card need love too. It's a unique way of collecting cards that won't fit into other people's collection.

Me too. One of these days I hope to build a 56T set... and when I do, they'll be in low grade for sure.

Lol... I have a few smeared autographs in the Damaged Card binder myself. Glad there's other collectors out there that can appreciate cards in less than mint condition.
