Back in the early 90's, I was fortunate enough to get hired by my local card shop who introduced me to the world of promo cards. Since then, I have accumulated hundreds of different promo cards ranging from baseball to non-sports to soccer cards.
And recently, I picked up the two promo cards have have eluded my collection for twenty-five years.
They're the 1988 Upper Deck baseball card promos:
#1 DeWayne Buice
#700 Wally Joyner
These cards were distributed in a variety of ways and actually have an interesting story behind them. It even involves a little bit of Upper Deck's history. If you're interested, I encourage you to read this article.
As for me... I grew tired of seeing them sit atop my cardboard wantlist, so I headed over to COMC and purchased the pair for $9.50. With that being said... they're officially the most expensive cards in my promo card collection. But at least I didn't pay the high prices these cards once commanded from card shops.
Happy Wednesday and sayonara!

Love promo cards. There are so many out there too.
I still have the November 1988 Baseball Card Magazine that was the first time I saw the Buice card
Cool and important pieces of card collecting history.
I used to get promo cards mailed to my place of work. Free cards!
But it was during my collecting hiatus and I didn't know what to do with them. I think I even threw a few away.
Of course, now no one one mails free cards to me at work.
Dig that hologram at the bottom. That shape ended up on their hockey sets.
Not a bad pick up, for a semi-decent price. Bargain hunting at it's finest!
I would love to get one of those Joyner's. He would look good in my Angels in the Desert set. Nice find my friend!!
congrats on landing the promos!
The checklist has more cards. Are there more versions of the cards?
That was a good preview of what was to come for UD.
Never knew this story. Just a note Fuji, you are up to pick in my contest. Visit when you can and pick your prize!
Fuji! The A's got Kurt Suzuki back! I saw the headline and said "Oh, I know someone who's going to be excited..."
Wow. Talk about waking up to a nice surprise. He's struggled this season... but the A's can really use a veteran catcher. Hopefully he'll be able to put some kind of spark into their lineup. Worse case scenario... my favorite player is back on my favorite team ;-)
Yeah... from what I've read there are three versions of each card.
Very cool. I'll have to dig through my back issues and see if I have one of those ads.
