Are You Ready for Some Football?

I am.  But honestly... four days ago I would have said "not really".  What changed?

1995 Pacific Crown Royale #12

Jerry Jones traded one of the best pass rushers in the league to the Green Bay PackersWho dat?

2022 Sports Illustrated for Kids #1039

As noted by several sports commentators, Micah Parsons is only the second person in NFL history with 12+ sacks in each of his first four seasonsThe other guy?

1994 Topps Finest Refractor #92

Reggie White helped lead the Packers to a Super Bowl title.  Hopefully Parsons will too.

Since
football posts aren't exactly common on this blog, I figured I'd kill a bunch of birds with one stone.

1993 Pacific Picks The Pros #2

Congratulations to Sterling Sharpe who is a member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2025!

2022 Panini Mosaic Reactive Orange Prizm #97

Congratulations to Travis and Taylor!

Side note:  I spent over an hour digging through boxes searching for the 2011 Topps American Pie card of Kanye West and Taylor Swift, but couldn't find it.  Not sure if I even own the card, but I thought I did.

In addition to the start of the NFL season, college football is kicking off as well.

2015 Leaf Draft #25
2015 Upper Deck #15

I'm not an Oregon Ducks fan, but I did follow Ekpre-Olomu about a decade ago.  At the time he was dating my best friend's cousin's daughter and was rated one of the best cornerbacks in collegeTen years later, he's part of the family.  Earlier in the summer, my friend had him sign a few cards for me.  Thank you Ifo!

By the way... Kerry I have a signed card set aside for you.  He's the biggest Ducks fan I know.

As for me, I'll be rooting for the San Jose State Spartans this season.

1985 7-11 Dr. Pepper San Francisco 49ers Police #NNO

Did you know that hall of fame coach Bill Walsh graduated from SJSU in 1995?  Forty-plus years later... I did too.

Alright... I'll wrap up this post with a Seattle Seahawks card:

1988 Kenner Starting Lineup #NNO

They are my other favorite football team.  I've been a Seattle Seahawks fan since 1981.  They might not be ranked as high as the Packers on experts' power rankings, but I'll be rooting for them just as much.

It's time to answer the question...

Are you ready for some football?

If so...

Who are you rooting for?

As I stated at the start of the post... "I am".  But baseball comes first.  So depending on how the San Diego Padres play, the Seahawks and Packers might be on hold until November.

Happy Saturday and sayonara!

Flea Market Finds #171: Magazines w/Cards and Some Turtles

Another start to a new month and another trip to the De Anza Flea Market.

Last month at the flea market, my childhood buddy texted me and asked if I was out walking around.  He told me he saw me, but that I blended into the crowd and he lost me.  We decided to meet up this time around.

It was cool to catch up with him since it had been a couple of years since we last hung out.  Unfortunately whenever there's someone with me, I feel obligated to match their pace (which is usually faster than me), so I may or may not have missed out on stuff.

For example, this vendor had some packs and boxesDo I really need a box of 1988 Donruss or 1990 Topps?  Of course not.  But if they were $5 each, I would have grabbed them.  The problem is I didn't have a chance to ask, because my buddy was already a few vendors down and I didn't want to hold him up.  There were at least two other vendors with cards that I barely checked out, but I did manage to make two purchases.

Purchase #1Magazines w/Cards  $20

Last month... my buddy Tony sold me two SI for Kids issues from the early 90's.  He mentioned that he might have more at his house, so when we were coming up to his booth... I warned my friend that I might need a few minutes with him.

He indeed had another SI for Kids issue:

Sports Illustrated for Kids (September 1991)

Here's the sheet of cards that were inside:

This is a solid sheet of athletesSeven of them are in the hall of fame for their respective sports.

Tony also had one of these Alan Kaye's Sports Cards News & Price Guides:

Alan Kaye's Sports Cards News & Price Guides (July 1992)

If you're familiar with this magazine, the cover doubles as an oversized card:

Depending on the condition of these magazines, I will either keep them intact or cut them up.  This particular one had some water damage, so I went with the latter.

Each issue also includes two nine-card sheets (similar to the SI for Kids magazines).  The first one included The Bash Brothers, The Great One, and a second year Thome:

The other sheet had cards of Bo, Boomer, Barry, Morris, Mully, and Ryno:

In addition to those two sheets, there was another sheet with an oversized card of Mickey Mantle and five tobacco sized cards of Negro League stars:

And if that weren't enough... Mr. Kayes tossed in these two Rookies of the Year holograms:

Next up is a 1989 issue of Baseball Cards featuring The Kid:

Baseball Cards (November 1989)

This magazine was pretty beat up, but the rookie year card of Griffey was pretty clean:

Here are the other three "rookie cards":

The final magazine was the only issue I decided to keep intact:

SCD Baseball Card Price Guide Monthly (November 1990)

I thought about cutting out the cards... especially the Jordan baseball card.  But the magazine was in nice condition, so I kept the issue intact and grabbed some images off of eBay:

Twenty bucks probably seems like a lot for four magazines from the 90's, but the Jordan issue by itself can often sell for that amount.  I figured the rest is gravy.

Purchase #2TMNT Graphic Novel  $10

1989 First Graphic TMNT (5th Printing)

Found this graphic novel sitting in a crate.  The vendor had a bunch of toys and comics.  I probably would have dug around a little longer had I been alone.  Anyways... saw this and figured I'd grab it for my co-worker's daughter.  She's a huge Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan.

Well that's it.  Two purchases and only one of them was for myself.

It was nice catching up with my friend, but if we do this again... I'll probably go back and walk around the flea market a second time on my own.  Either that or I'll have him show up an hour or two later.

Well that's it for now.  There's another flea market in ten days at a nearby high school, so stay tuned.

Until then...

Happy Wednesday and sayonara!

Extra Innings

Last year Dennis over at Too Many Verlanders sent me some programs and magazines.  Since they relate to today's flea market post, I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone.

Let's start off with this issue of Legends from 1991:

Legends (May/June 1991)

This issue comes with a really cool sheet of cards that includes Michael Jordan, Rickey Henderson, and Barry Sanders.  There's also another sheet containing Reggie Jackson, Gayle Sayers, and Nolan Ryan postcards.

I've been slowly building a collection of Legends issues for over a decade now and needed this one, so I didn't have it in me to cut out the cards.

Luckily, Dennis included some examples from other issues:

Legends Postcards

Here's a closer look at the Gwynn:

And here's a look at some cards that were carefully cut from other Legends issues:

1990 Legends #20

1991 Legends #53

Dennis also sent me this Rickey Henderson:

1990 Topps Magazine #TM30

1990 was the first year Topps released their magazine.  They published four issues and each one contained eight cards.  This Rickey came out of the final issue of 1990.  They would go on to produce Topps Magazine for three more years with a total of sixteen issues.  If you're interested in reading a little more about them, I showed off my collection back in 2013.

Dennis also tossed in a pair of sports programs:

1987 MLB All-Star Game Program

This is a pretty cool piece of history, since 1987 was the only year the Oakland Coliseum hosted the MLB All-Star Game.

This program honored another stadium...

Before Petco Park, the Padres played at Jack Murphy Stadium.  This program honors their thirty-four year tenure there.  If the hobby gods are looking down on me, then you might see this program make an appearance in a future post.  It has to do with tracking down two more cards mentioned on the back cover:

Thank you Dennis for these really cool additions to my collection!

Flea Market Finds #169: Cheap Wax, Dime Cards, and A Piece of the Past

Not sure about you, but Mother Nature has been messing with us here in the Bay Area the past week or so.  One week it's freezing.  The next week it's hot.  Yesterday it rained.  Whatever she decides... I just hope it stays cool for another three or four months.

Temperatures rose into the low 80's last week.  Luckily it cooled off in time for the weekend and the De Anza Flea Market.  When I arrived there on Saturday at around 7:15am... there were already people parked and walking around.  People are catching on to the "early bird catches the worm" philosophy.  The only downside is that half of the vendors aren't completely set up, so you either miss out on some stuff or you have to go back and see what you missed.

All of my purchases took place within the first hour... which is normal.  That being said, one of my best deals was found on the last row of the day.  But let's check out the other stuff first...

Purchase #1Japanese Postcards Book  $2

There's a longtime vendor on the first row that sells used books for great prices.  Back when I taught fifth and sixth grade, I filled out my classroom library with their books.  In recent years, I've purchased a Wayne Gretzky signed autobiography and Michael Jordan's first Sport Illustrated cover from them.

This time around... I found this cool book of postcards.  There are twenty-our perforated postcards inside.  Here's my favorite:

Here's a look at the back:

No way I could pass up twenty-four postcards for two bucks.

Purchase #2Handful of Matchbooks  $1

A few booths down was a guy who brought a bin filled with matchbooks.  The San Francisco Giants one caught my eye, so I asked him how much he wanted.  He told me I could pick twenty-five for $5.  After I told him, I really only wanted the two Giants matchbooks, he told me I could have them for a buck and I could grab a handful as a bonus (no cherry picking).

I lucked out, because there are a few that are from places I've been to in the past:  Coco's, the Crow's Nest, Alpha Beta, and Harrah's (South Shore Lake Tahoe).

Purchase #3Pair of 1990 SI for Kids Magazines  $20

Whenever I hit up De Anza, I always make time to hang out with some of my friends who set up on a regular basis.  I've been waiting to see Tony, because he opens up a lot of blasters and I was hoping he'd sell me an Update Skenes rookie for my set build.  Unfortunately he didn't have one.

But he did have two copies of Sports Illustrated for Kids (October 1990) that he thought I might be interested in.

Here's the 9-card sheet in that month's issue:

Most of you know how much I enjoy collecting SI for Kids cards, but this sheet was actually only the appetizer.  The main thing I wanted from this issue was this four card panel of McDonald's Michael Jordans:

You might notice that the numbering is a little weird.  That's because the other four cards in the set were on another panel.  I had hoped to find it in the other issue, but they were duplicates.

Honestly... I wasn't too disappointed.  I kept one of the magazines intact and I cut the cards out of the other one.

Purchase #41989 Pro Set Football Series 2 Wax Box $22

A few vendors down from my friends was a guy with a bunch of toys, magazines, and movies laid out on a table.  Underneath a stack of comics, I noticed this box.  The guy was asking $25 which I was willing to pay.  However I didn't have a five dollar bill, so I gave him a twenty and a ten.  He didn't have change and I only had 2 one dollar bills, so he took $22 instead.

This product is loaded with some hall of fame rookie cards like Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, and Deion Sanders.  But I'm equally excited at trying to build the announcer set.

Purchase #5Auto Relic of a Hall of Famer  $10

2012 Topps Triple Threads #TTAR-206 (#'d 10/18)

I struck out on the next three rows, but as I turned the corner on the final row, I found this shiny card sitting on a table in a penny sleeve next to the box it was pulled from.  I'm no longer actively chasing sticker-graphs, but when they pop up at a flea market for the right price, I'll pick them up.  Not gonna lie... in this era where most vendors think every card they own is worth stupid money... I was pretty shocked to hear him say he only wanted ten bucks.

I pulled out that ten dollar bill I had originally given to the 1989 Pro Set guy immediately before he could change his mind.

Purchase #6Dime Cards  $2

A lady who was selling some crafts had given her teenage son part of a table and he put out a few boxes of cards with a sign "10 for a dollar".  I picked out twenty... highlighted by the nine cards above and this card of my favorite football player in the 90's:

2022 Panini Legacy Decade of Dominance #DD-7

That's wraps up another trip to the flea market.  The next one is two Saturdays from now and I'm planning on being out there... as long as Mother Nature cooperates.

Until then...

Happy Thursday and sayonara!
