Plethora of Pads

It's hard to believe that I've been a San Diego Padres fan for over forty years.  The only professional teams I have rooted for longer are the Oakland/Sacramento A's and the Seattle Seahawks.

Sometimes the fact that I have two favorite teams within one sport confuses people, but it's pretty simple.  When the A's play any MLB team other than the Padres, I root for the A's.  And when the Padres play any MLB team other than the A's, I root for the Padres.

It's only tricky when they play against each other.  Then it depends on who needs the win more.  Since both teams are fighting for first place in their divisions, I just sit back and enjoy the game.  That's what happened this weekend.  The A's won today, but the Padres won the series.

2022 Topps Opening Day #OD7

Figured it's a good time to show off some Padres cards that John (@ Johnny's Trading Spot) and Reader X sent me earlier in the year.

John is an Atlanta Braves' fan, while Reader X roots for the New York Yankees.  Since the Braves currently hold the best record in baseball, let's start with the cards John sent me...

1990 Panini Sticker #356

Although I love collecting baseball cards featuring my favorite players, I also enjoy adding team related items like this Panini sticker and these team cards:

2024 Topps 582 Montgomery Club #2
2025 Topps 582 Montgomery Club #39

John sent two partial team sets from the 582 Montgomery Club set.  Here are some of the bigger names:

I tried to join the 582 Montgomery Club the first couple of years, but it always filled up too fast.  Glad to have some of these singles for my collection.

He also sent me a partial 1985 Mother's Cookies Padres team set.  Here are some of the notable names:

But my favorite card is the one featuring Jack Murphy Stadium:

1985 Mother's Cookies Padres #28

He sent me a big stack of Mr. Machado cards.  Here's a sampling:

Plus there were some other parallels and inserts featuring some familiar names:

Next up are a variety of inserts and parallels from Reader X.  He sent me over seventy different Padres for my collection.

Here are some of the highlights:

Tony Gwynn is my all-time favorite player... so I'm always excited to add new cards to my binder.

Fernando is my favorite current Padre:

He's really struggling this season.  It's been two months and he still hasn't hit a home run.  Hopefully he figures things out at the plate soon.

Machado has been struggling too, but that's not stopping me from enjoying his cards:

Honestly... all of the Padres big name hitters are struggling this season.

But Luis Arraez is hitting .323 for the San Francisco Giants this season.  The Padres could really use him this season.

Even without their stellar bats, the Padres still have the 5th best record in baseball... and are only 4 games behind the Atlanta Braves.  There's still plenty of baseball left to be played.

Let's go Padres!  Let's go A's!

Thank you John and Reader X for your generous contributions to my San Diego Padres PC.

Happy Sunday and sayonara!

It's Embarrassing

I'm pretty organized... until I'm not.  There's a special place in my office where I put things like side projects, eBay and flea market purchases, and other random items like blogger care packages get added into the stack.

Over Spring Break, I started tackling some of the packages.  There were a couple of boxes from John over at Johnny's Trading Spot and Woody over at Sports Card Forum.  I sorted those cards, but they still need to be scanned and documented.

Last week, Reader X commented on a post that reminded me that he sent me a box back in January that I've been sitting on for far too long.  Well I opened it up and was blown away.  Like John and Woody's cards, they've been sorted... but not scanned.

Stuff is piling up, so I'm making their packages... along with padded envelopes from Dennis @ Too Many Verlanders, Bob over at The Best Bubble, PWEs from Jeremy at Topps Cards that Never Were and Adam at Thoughts and Sox, Ryan's advent calendar, and three new packages I received from Rod at Padrographs a priority on this blog.

I would take a photo of this stack I've built, but honestly it's embarrassing.  The fact that I have stuff dating back to last year that still needs to be documented is embarrassing.  It's time to sit down and hammer out some thank you posts.

I'm gonna kick things off with a twenty-seven year old item that I never knew existed.  But before I get to it, let's start with a cardboard appetizer:

1996 Zenith Mozaics #20

This mid 90's insert featuring dufex technology and my top two favorite baseball players of all-time were inserted at a rate of 1:10 packs.

The third player featured is Wally Joyner who spent four seasons with the Padres from 1996 to 1999.  He was their starting first baseman all four seasons, but I'm a little surprised that Pinnacle chose him over Ken Caminiti who won the 1996 NL MVP Award.

Okay.  Time to show off the main course:

1999 Salvino's Baby Bammers

Now I'm familiar with Salvino's version of a Beanie Baby.  But until I saw this staring at me from the bottom of Reader X's care package... I had never seen one packaged like this.

Every Bammer I had ever seen prior to this was sold individually and free from a carded back.  I love it!  It's items like this that I'd never buy... but I'll proudly display.  Unfortunately I don't really have any wall space in my office.  That means... I'll be taking this into my classroom and hanging it up there.

Can't wait to see how long it takes for one of my students or colleagues to see it and comment.  When they do, I'll say I'm proud to have a teddy bear version of my favorite baseball player and some guy named Wally.

Thank you Xavier!  Sorry it took me four months to open up your care package.  Hopefully it only takes me a few weeks to hammer out the highlights from the rest of your box.

Happy Tuesday and sayonara!

I'm a TRU Kid

When I was a kid back in the 70's and 80's... Toys R Us was the greatest retail store in (my) existence.  I only got the opportunity to go there a few times a year on special occasions like finding a birthday present for a friend.  But when it happened, it was like thirty minutes of pure happinessAction figures, video games, and model kits were my favorite sections, but I'd make sure to spend time in the Lego, board game, and bicycle areas as well.

By the late 80's and early 90's, they also became a source of sports cards.  They collaborated with Topps to produce their popular Baseball Rookies boxed set from 1987 to 1991.

1993 Topps Toys R Us Factory Set

Then in 1993, they teamed up with Topps again and produced a special Stadium Club set featuring young baseball stars from the era.  That year I had walked away from the hobby to focus on college, so I had zero interest in purchasing this set at the time.

However fast forward thirty-three years and I found myself purchasing this set at the De Anza Flea Market for five bucks.  The key to this purchase was the set of 5x7 Master Photos that was included in the box:

1993 Topps Toys R US Master Set #NNO

Scan of Card Back

1993 Topps Toys R US Master Set #NNO

I feel like these twelve oversized cards are worth the five bucks alone.  But Toys R Us also included a 100 card box set as a bonus.  Here's a peek at some of the bigger names from that set:

In an era where blaster boxes containing seventy-two cards will set you back $25 at Target, I feel like boxed sets from the 90's like this one are a better bargain.  But that's just my two cents.

Don't worry... I'm not hating on current sets.  Heck I'm building a bunch of Topps sets from the past few years.

One of them is the 2023 Topps flagship baseball setJohn over at Johnny's Trading Spot recently sent me over 200 cards for my set build:

I originally scanned a few nine-pocket pages with highlights, but I've misplaced them or accidentally deleted them.  Anyways... this huge lot left me with only needing ten cards (which I'll just grab off of Sportlots) to complete the Series 1, 2, and Update sets.

Thank you John!

Greg over at Night Owl Cards also sent me some set help:

These four cards completed my 2025 Topps Holiday base set:

Greg also passed along some A's and Padres cards that John had originally intended for me:

I'm guessing they were originally intended for the huge care package that John sent me a few months ago that included the above 2023 Topps cards.  I'm still in the process of sorting it, but as soon as I'm finished I'll be showing off some of the goodies from that box.

Thank you Greg and John for helping me out with these set builds!  And thank you to all of you who took the time to read this post.

Today's question of the day:

Were you a Toys R Us kid?

Do you have any fond memories of shopping there when you were a kid?

If so, please share them down in the comment section below.  I promise to read and respond to all of them.

Until then...

Happy Sunday and sayonara!

Flea Market Finds #184: Sheets, Sets, and a SLU

After over a month away from the local flea market, I made my out to the Branham Flea Market on Saturday for my first haul of 2026.  Not sure if it was the cold weather or the holiday weekend, but there were less vendors than usual.  However I did manage to make a few purchases from a pair of card dealers.

The first one is a regular that I've bought from on numerous occasions.  He's located on the very first row and is usually my first stop of the day.  This time around he had a table filled with uncut sheets.

Purchase #1a Uncut Mother's Cookies Sheets  $15

There were some cool oddball sets from the early 90's, but I was mainly drawn to his Mother's Cookies team sets.  He had five different 1985 sets which featured the cards handed out at the stadiums.  I was tempted to buy them all, but I didn't want to blow most of my cash on my first purchase.  So I grabbed my two favorite teams:

1985 Mother's Cookies Oakland A's

1985 Mother's Cookies San Diego Padres

I'm not sure how these uncut sheets were distributed, but I've written about the SGA sets from the 80's and 90's a few times on this blog.  Each year my brother would take me to a handful of Giants and A's games and I'd always try to circle the Mother's Cookies Players Card Day on the calendar.

The guy had the Giants sheet too, but I picked my favorite team over childhood memories.

Purchase #1bHockey Autographs $2

The vendor also brought out a box of oddballs for me to check out and there were two 9-pocket pages with these signed hockey cards.  Not sure how legit these are, the price was right, so I took a chance on them.  I was mainly drawn to the Pavel Bure cards, but there are some other notable names in the lot.

The guy was still setting up, so I told him I'd come back a little later.  On the second row, I found the other card guyRemember the guy I bought the 70's Laughlin and 80's Traded sets from last year?  Well before he left for Arkansas, he sold his remaining inventory to this vendor.  I've seen him set up a few times, but his prices were always too high.  This time around he was more reasonable...

Purchase #2a1985 Donruss Factory Set $15

His first table was filled with 800ct. boxes filled with cards from the 80's and 90's.  His asking price of $15 for this factory set was reasonable, so I started digging through his stuff.

I opened the set while I was there and noticed that one of the packs had been opened:

I still decided to buy it.  Unfortunately when I got home, I discovered that it was missing the Roger Clemens rookie.  I've added it to my saved eBay searches.  My hopes is to find a clean copy for under $10 delivered.

Next to his sets, he had a bunch of wax boxes with packs that had already been opened.  I found one I was interested in...

Purchase #2b1996 Sky Motion Football  $5

As you can see, none of these packs were sealed.  But within the box, there was a nice starter set that included a few big names:

1996 Skybox Sky Motion #SM17
1996 Skybox Sky Motion #SM15
1996 Skybox Sky Motion #SM48

There were 37 different cards for my set build... leaving me needing only 23 singles to complete the set.  I immediately went over to Sportlots and crossed off 16 more:

Considering I have already invested over $25 into this set build, I'm already regretting my decision to build this set.

At least there were two of the Hobby Exclusive Gold parallels included in the box:

1996 Skybox Sky Motion Gold #SM32

1996 Skybox Sky Motion Gold #SM32

These were inserted into every other box and can be quite elusive when seeking specific players.

At the other end of his tables, the vendor had a bunch of knick-knacks including programs, photos, card sheets, and smaller card sets.  I bought a few more items...

Purchase #2c1982 Cracker Jack Sheets  $8

1982 Cracker Jack AL Sheet

1982 Cracker Jack NL Sheet

This is a set that I've been looking for on eBay for a few years.  I like the Cracker Jack border paired with the 1978 and 1979 Topps card designs.  Plus each sheet features eight hall of famers.

I didn't want to spend more than $10 for the pair... and thanks to this vendor I didn't have to.

In the same stack as these uncut sheets, I also found this cool Upper Deck SGA sheet from the 90's...

Purchase #2d1993 Upper Deck Billy Martin Tribute Sheet  $2

Billy Ball played a big role in my childhood and Oakland A's fanfare, so I'm always looking to add new Billy Martin items to my collectionUpper Deck made a bunch of these tribute sheets in the 90's.  I have a few sitting in my collection and one of them is framed and hanging up in my office.

But before Saturday, I had never seen this sheet before.  It was passed out on August 15, 1993 at the Oakland Coliseum.  Fans who attended that game were treated to this sheet as well as Kirby Puckett's career day at the plate.  He went 5 for 5 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI's as the Twins destroyed the A's 12 to 5.

Purchase #2e1983 Stuart Montreal Expos Set  $5

Among the card sheets, programs, and photos, there were also a few sets I was interested in.  The first one that caught my eye was this Montreal Expos oddball set:

Based on what I found online, Stuart was a company that made snacks in Canada.  Based on a TCDB photo, these appeared to be inserted into boxes of snack cakes back in 1983.

The set features all of the early 80's Expos you're familiar with, including these three hall of famers:

1983 Stuart Montreal Expos #4
1983 Stuart Montreal Expos #8
1983 Stuart Montreal Expos #9

I'm happy to add this to my Montreal Expos PC.  And I'm happy to add the next set to my Green Bay Packers PC...

Purchase #2f1997 Playoff Packer Super Sunday Set  $5

When the Packers beat the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI, it was the first time celebrating a Super Bowl victory.  Sure I had watched and rooted for teams every year leading up to this one, but they were never my own team.  I was very happy to find this set for a reasonable price.

Purchase #3Hot Wheels 2020 GR Toyota Supra  $8

After walking around the rest of the flea market, I didn't see any other deals on cards.  But I saw a guy with a bunch of diecast vehicles.  I asked if he had any GR Supras and he started digging through his boxes.  He found this one:

2024 Hot Wheels Green and Gold #3

I've been trying to track down all of the MK5 Supra die cast cars and this is one of the ones I needed.  I normally wouldn't pay this much for a non-premium Hot Wheel, but the guy did take the time to look for it.

Freebie #11992 Tom Seaver Opened Kenner SLU

When I was done walking the entire flea market, I went back to the guy with the Mother's Cookies sheets.  We were talking about cards and stuff when he pulled this out of a box:

He told me I could have it for free, since the packaging was less than pristine.  The poster and figure are pretty cool:

1992 Kenner SLU Figure & Poster #NNO

But this was the thing I was excited about the most:

1992 Kenner SLU #NNO

He started pulling out other items from the box.  I wasn't really interested in any of it, but I felt obligated to buy something since he gave me this SLU.  So I bought this...

Purchase #42016 Panini NFL Sticker Collection Album  $1

Out of the 485 stickers in the set, this album is only missing 16 of them.  I originally planned on tracking them down, but after wasting so much money trying to build that 1996 Skybox SkyMotion set... I'll probably just leave it as it is.

Well that wraps up my first flea market trip of 2026.  Although I wouldn't call any of these purchases "stellar deals", I am pretty excited about the oddball sets and uncut sheets.

Here is today's question of the day...

Do you collect uncut sheets?

If so...

Do you have any personal favorites in your collection?

Although I love these Mother's Cookies and Cracker Jack sheets, my favorite uncut sheets to collect are Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine cards.

Okay... this post has dragged on long enough.  I appreciate those who stuck it out.

Happy Tuesday and sayonara!
