Bad Backs and Cards Intact

Oh man... the past few days have been absolutely miserable.  On Tuesday, I tweaked my back during 3rd period.  It wasn't anything too serious, but it was a healthy reminder that I'm not getting any younger.  The next day, we were in the computer lab and I completely threw it out.  I was in so much pain that i spent the rest of the period laying on the ground.

To put things into perspective... I'm a huge germaphobe and the last thing I'd ever want to do is lay down on the ground at my school.

Normally, I would have taken a few days off to recoup, but my principal paid for this Restorative Practice conference that took place on Thursday and Friday, which involved me sitting (the worst position for my back) for six-plus hours each day.  She was okay with me not attending, but I felt really bad that the school would be out several hundred dollars.  Plus my friend signed up for the same conference and I didn't want to leave her hanging.

Anyways... this weekend I'm hoping to rest and recover.  However before I lay down and relax, I wanted to get to two care packages that have something in common.  They both contained custom baseball cards.

I'm not sure about you, but the first blogger who comes to mind when I think of custom trading cards is Gavin over at Baseball Card BreakdownLast month he showed off his inventory of custom card tradebait and here are the three that really caught my eye:

Honestly... every custom he's ever made would be welcomed into my collection.  However I'd hate to gain the reputation as being a greedy collector.

In addition to these three customs, he also sent me an updated template for my Bip Roberts cut:

New Template vs. Old Template

Both are awesome and 100% appreciated.  He also sent me a Randy Jones oddball, but I'll share that another day since it has inspired me to try and hunt down a complete set.

Instead... let's move on to the other care package that also contains custom cards.

Last week I received an email from one of my readers asking me if I'd be interested in some Baseball Cards magazines from the early 90's that featured free baseball cards inside of each of them.  Well... that's a no-brainer.  Of course I was.

On Thursday, I received a box filled with these eight issues:

I'm planning on creating a series were I review each of these issues individually.  However in the meantime, here's a peek at one of the magazine oddballs:

I decided to go with this card, because I thought it was ironic that one of the magazines featured Mattingly who was known for his back issues.  Sorry for the blurry scan.  I could remedy this by removing the cards from the magazine, but for the time being I prefer to keep the magazines intact.

Well that's it for today.

A huge shout out to Gavin and AlexThank you for making my weekend a little less painful.

Happy Saturday and sayonara!

I'm so jealous of you getting those magazines! I'd love to spend a couple hours flipping through those!

You're a germaphobe who is a teacher? Seems like you're in the wrong profession!!

That Mattingly is better than anything Topps Living is doing. Glorious specimen there. Looking forward to your new series.

Oh, man, sorry to hear about your back. Rest well!

I look forward to reading the magazine series.

Totally forgot to say that I hope your back is better soon. It seems like you have issues as often as I do. :-(

As often as your having these issues, one would think that there would be some sort of way for you to lessen the chances of your back going out, chiropractor? Massage? Yoga? Heck, even something like Tai Chi seems like it could do you some good! Obviously I'm sending out as many positive vibes as I can muster :)

Glad you like, Fuji! Hope your back feels better soon!

this particular round of back trouble must've been awful for you! so sorry Fuj! I hope you are recovering. The magazines will be handy for those times when your back is keeping you down. And - Altuve could not be any sweeter! LOVE IT!

Been through a number of serious back episodes myself. I feel your pain. Hopefully it's a minor one that heals fast. None of us is getting any younger but some days the aging seems faster than others. Feel better.

Back pain sucks!I remember walking out of a Family Dollar with my daughters and my back just giving out.I couldn't move for 10 minutes and needed my car door to help keep me up.My girls laughed hysterically, so at least they got a little comic relief out of it lol.

Interesting how this post shares your bad back issues and your good back issues (of Baseball Cards magazine). I remember having back muscle pains back when my kids were small (hot compresses and warm hand towels helped). Rest easy and I hope you soon get back to your old self (puns not intended, lol).

I hope you are feeling better. I loved those old Baseball Cards magazine repli-cards... that's how I learned about a lot of the old card designs when I started collecting.

hey guys... back is better. not good. but better. thanks for the well wishes.

sg488 - me too. they did a good job. can't wait to show them off in future posts.

kin - i'm looking forward to flipping through them too. sorry to hear you have back issues too. wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

peter k steinberg - lol. i know. but my kids are pretty good about respecting my stuff.

brian - i've already started reading the first magazine. should have a post in a week or two.

jon - yeah all of those things are on my "to do" checklist. first up... chiropractor appointment.

defgav - thanks again gavin. they're awesome. pretty soon, i'm gonna need to dedicate an entire binder to your customs.

julie owens - 2018 was definitely the year of back pains for me. but you're right... it's a great time to lay down and read baseball card magazines.

hackenbush -you said it brother. it's been a tough year. hopefully 2019 is better. but like you said... we're not getting any younger.

sumomenkoman - look forward to writing about it.

sport card collectors - my last principal hooked me up and let me move into a science classroom. now i have a personal sink in front of my class. it's awesome.

big tone - it's insane the limitations back pains place on us. one of the toughest things for me to do last week was crouching down to get into my car. i hope your back hasn't given you any problems lately.

bbcardz - oh man. i need to hire you as my editor. the whole double entendre never popped into my head. ugh. i sure dropped the ball on that one.

john miller - thanks bro. it feels better.

angus - yeah. gotta love the generosity among card collectors.

matt - thanks. i feel a little better. hope to be 90% by this upcoming weekend.

paul hadsall - i love them too. in a perfect world, i'd have to copies of each magazine. one to keep in original condtion and another to cut up.

bulldog - it's crazy to flip through ads and see what some things sold for twenty-plus years ago. they're very entertaining.
