Mental Health Weekend

Do you ever need a break from cards?

I'm not sure where my head is at... but I just didn't want to look at sports cards this weekend.

It might be the overwhelming number of cards piling up on my office desk.  Or maybe it was the passing of my favorite player.

Whatever it is... I decided to take the weekend off from sports cards (skipped a card show and two flea markets) and focus on one of my other favorite pastimes:  video games.

During the last week of the school year, two of my co-workers were talking about this game called The Last of Us.  I've always been fascinated with post-apocalyptic related things, like H.G. Wells' book, The Time Machine and movies like The Road Warrior and The Postman (yes, I liked that movie).  Anyways... this video game fits the genre and although I'm not a huge fan of third-person games, it actually has a pretty cool story line and amazing graphics.

I'm taking a break to write this post, but as of right now... I'm about six hours into the game and have no idea whether or not I'm close to the end.

But even if I don't finish it this weekend, I promise I'll be back to blogging about cards tomorrow.  In fact... after watching yesterday's A's game... I already have an idea for a post.

Happy Sunday and sayonara!

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean. Hobbies are just like anything else -- if you spend too much time on your hobby, it starts to feel like you are "working on it" and, therefore, it starts to feel like work. Keeping the hobby fun requires stepping away and doing other stuff.

Hope you've enjoyed the PS3 break (I have two PS3s...I never get games other than sports for fear of the game sucking!).

I'm not a video game gau myself but I've been doing more reading lately myself. Have fun!

I'm like Hackenbush. I take my breaks from the hobby with a book. Barnes and Noble closeout tables+teacher discount=about a years worth of reading for $25.

Yes you have to step away from the piles of cards for a while... Have the Sox /A's game on now

Can't say I'm a video game guy, but I definitely go through periods where my cards don't much appeal to me. I think it happens to all of us.

Mental breaks from life in general are a great thing.

I hear you, I have a couple of video games I usually play through and when I want a lot of quiet I read.

Well put Tony. You should co-author this blog, because that's what I should have written in this post..

As for sports games... I usually wait a year, so I can get them at discounted prices. But I think that last sports game I purchased was Madden 2011. My vice are first person shooter games... but I might only buy one or two of them a year.

Unfortunately... 90% of my reading material are your guy's blogs. Every now and then, one of my students will recommend a book... but that comes only once or twice a year.

Nice. It's been a few years, but when I was building my classroom library, I'd hang out at the discount area looking for books. Gotta love the teacher discount.

Helluva game on Sunday. Congratulations on the win.

C'mon Nick. Admit it. You're always down to dig through a few dime boxes ;-)

It's amazing what two days off can do for your mind.

Gotta ask... what games?

Yes, I was dangerously close to burning out of the hobby many times. Actually, I'm still liable to do so.

You might want to consider taking a mental health weekend. It worked wonders for me ;-)
