The Doctor Has Arrived!

A few years ago, I stopped paying for cable television and switched over to a much more affordable option... Netflix.

Believe it or not, it's opened my eyes to a whole new world of television.  Without Netflix, I wouldn't have had access to Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Sherlock, The Walking Dead, Jericho, and of course... Doctor Who.

I remember flipping channels as a kid and catching glimpses of The Doctor on PBS.  But I never took the time to watch it.  Then one day, I overheard students talking about it in class.  This eventually led to a huge discussion about how I was missing out on the greatest show on television.  My students informed me that it was on Netflix and that I should try it out.

I did... and I'm hooked.  I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the greatest show on television, but I'm looking forward to watching the latest season when it comes out.

In the meantime, I have these Doctor Who Topps Attax cards to keep me entertained...

John over at The Pursuit of 80's(ness) blogged about these cards back in April.  I left a comment and he responded with a trade offer.  He sent me a Doctor Who starter pack, which contained a card album, a checklist (actually a poster), a game mat, a special lenticular card, and a pack of trading cards.

In addition to that, he threw in five extra packs.

There are 240 cards in the 2012 Topps Attax Doctor Who set.  Here's a quick breakdown of the checklist:

Rainbow Foil Cards (1:5 packs): #1 to #16
Mirror Foil Cards (1:2 packs): #17 to #48
Aliens: #49 to #119
Humans: #120 to #178
Humanoids: #179 to #183
Companions:  #184 to #202
Time Lords: #203 to #221
Robots: #222 to #229
Cyborgs: #230 to #235
Humanoid Cats: #236 to #238
Demon: #239
Vehicle: #240

Out of the six packs, I pulled one of the rainbow foil cards...

Out of the three Doctors I'm familiar with, I'd have to say David Tennant is my favorite.  It's hard to tell from this scan, but the card has a "refractor" touch to it.

I also pulled the regular version of the 10th Doctor.  He was the only Time Lord I got.  In fact, most of the cards were aliens and humans, with a few humanoids, companions, and cyborgs mixed in.

The card I wanted the most was a Rose Tyler from the companion subset... but the Martha Jones is a nice back up.  I was also pretty excited to see Vincent Van Gogh included in the set.  Vincent and the Doctor is one of my favorite episodes.

I also pulled a pair of mirror foil cards, which are your typical foil bordered cards.  And finally, there's the special lenticular card that came out of the starter pack...

When you move the card back and forth you see the 10th and 11th Doctors.  It's definitely the coolest card in the bunch.

So... what do you think?  Anyone else a fan of the show?

John... thanks for the trade.  Your Red Sox cards were packaged and shipped last Tuesday. I hope they're able to fit into your PC.

Happy Sunday and sayonara!

Neat cards, though I have no desire to chase after a CCG (particularly one that wasn't sold domestically)

I started watching Doctor Who a couple of years ago, and I have seen all of the modern episodes and some of the classic era ones.

When I saw the word Doctor in the title Nuthin' But A G Thang suddenly started playing in my head.

Anyway nice cards. I have no knowledge on Dr. Who whatsoever but I do know that there's a Star Wars The Clone Wars version of Topps Attax. And I need to get my hands on a Captain Rex card haha.

Best use of Attax ever.

My daughter is a Doctor Who fan and also watches Sherlock.

I use Netflix mostly for Mad Men, but the service is a hell of a lot more useful to me than TV right now.

Never seen the show but a number of my friends love it. If the entirety of the show were this though, I would watch.

That is magnificent. I watch the Doctor when I was young and an ex-girlfriend got me into it again because she had a huge crush on David Tennant.

If you get 9 doubles (especially one of David as the doctor so as to taunt my ex), I would be glad to trade you something for them.

I got into Doctor Who back when PBS was showing the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker, "The One With The Scarf"), but stopped watching somewhere in the Sixth Doctor (who was a complete git). I watched the very disappointing TV Movie from 1996 - they didn't get it. When the show was revived again, I'd heard good things about it so I got the first disk through Netflix. When it got to the part where The Doctor said "Pleased to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!", I smiled a smile of great satisfaction because these new people... they GOT IT.

Cool cards, I wouldn't mind picking up a bunch of those.

Cool that you cut the cable chord and don't regret it.

Love me some Dre... The Chronic is one of the greatest albums in my collection. I'll have to look into The Clone Wars cards... although I have plenty on my plate already.

One of these days I'll have to look into Mad Men. I have several co-workers who are into that show.

Ahhh... the lovely Ms. Pond.

I did have a few doubles... not don't think I have 9. Unfortunately... the Tennant is staying put ;-)

Lol... I remember seeing the Doctor w/the scarf when I was a kid.

There are times I miss it... but one of my best friends has the full package, so I go to her house to watch current episodes of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. As long as she has cable, I won't need to pay for it ;-)

Ooh, these look sweet!
It stinks that there aren't really any TCG/CCG for television shows anymore.
There was a GOT card game a few years back that I heard was pretty good, and they recently started a GOT Living Card Game (Essentially, a 40-card expansion is released every month, starter set required to play).
I guess to a degree, the market is to blame. Magic is a beast right now, and it doesn't really show any signs of slowing down.
That being said, I'm surprised there hasn't been a card game for Supernatural.

Thanks for the post! I wouldn't mind purchasing a few of these packs myself.
