These days I can watch most of my favorite movies with a click of a button. If there's not a DVD sitting on the shelf... then they're accessible on streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Peacock, Disney+, and HBO Max.
But growing up in the 70's and 80's, things were much different. Unless you owned the movie or worked in a video rental shop, you had to wait to watch a specific movie. In fact... half the time I'd flip through channels and stumble across a movie halfway through and begin watching it from there.

The Pride of the Yankees is one of those movies. As a kid, it was one of those "stop" and "drop" everything films... along with The Wizard of Oz and Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. After forty-plus years, I still consider it one of my favorite sports movies... right up there with Remember the Titans.
In 2009, Panini created several cards featuring this film. One of them is a relic card containing a swatch of clothing worn by Gary Cooper, the actor who portrayed Lou Gehrig. That card has been on my radar since I learned about it. The problem is the reasonably priced copies sell quickly, while the rest sit there outside of my comfort zone.
Well... thanks to Jim over at cards as i see them, I've officially crossed that card off of my most wanted list. Technically... he went above and beyond by sending me the dual relic version, which also features a swatch of clothing worn by Teresa Wright. She played Lou's wife in the movie and has an article about her featured on the Baseball Hall of Fame website.
There's a special reason I pushed back this post until today. The Pride of the Yankees premiered on July 14th, 1942 at the Astor Theatre in New York City... exactly 80 years ago.
Thank you Jim for this awesome card! It's not often I receive a care package that includes a card off of my Most Wanted list.

Definitely Pride of the Yankees, The Natural, as well as In Harms Way, The Longest Day, any Pink Panther movie from the 70s, the original 12 Angry Men, The Fugitive, Star Wars, A New Hope, and All the President's Men.

Very cool card! My stop and drop everything film is "Young Frankenstein" - I've seen it so many time I could probably quote the whole movie, yet I'll always watch it when it's on!

the snorting bull - watched both of films in my youth, but haven't seen either in the past decade or so. i think i own both dvds, but just not enough time to sit down and watch them
elliptical man - grew up with raiders of the lost ark. casino is one of my all-time favorite movies. i have heard of annie hall and casablanca, but never watched them. and never heard of in the name of the father
the lost collector - shawshank is like forrest gump. i can watch them over and over without getting bored. i used to say the same thing about the harry potter films (seen them at least 5 to 7x each), but i started watching them a few months ago on hbo/max... and didn't finish. guess i got bored ;D

Nice to see the Astor Theatre photo. It was a legendary theatre, torn down in the 1970s and replaced with a boring hotel.

bo - i remember the days when there were only three sw films. as for the astor theatre... it was gorgeous. shame they tore it down instead of restoring it
nick - haven't watched dog day afternoon, but i need to. the sandlot is another classic. my buddies loved dazed and confused, but i don't really remember it.

jafronius - i think you have to have a certain sense of humor to enjoy monty python. i know a bunch of people who love it. one of them is my brother. but i just couldn't get into it. on the other hand, i'm a huge fan of the wrath of khan.
