An International Post

This was a pretty stressful week in the classroom, but the World Baseball Classic is off and running... so there's balance in the force.

2006 Upper Deck Inaugural Images #II-30

Figured I'd focus on the positive and use the WBC as an excuse to show off some international stuff.

International Item #1Japanese Magazine Cards

These uncut sheets of cards feature characters from a 70's Japanese television show called Kamen Rider.  I wasn't able to find a year or magazine title, but I'm guessing they're from the 80's.  They were part of Ryan's advent calendar, so maybe his haiku will provide a hint:

Unfortunately... no specific details on these cards.  That's okay.  I like a good mystery.

International Item #2Three Countries, One Card

2007-08 In The Game O Canada Autographs #A-VS

Vicky Sunohara is a former Canadian hockey player who has won a ton of gold medals including a pair of Olympic gold medals (2002 and 2006) with Team Canada.

Up until a few weeks ago, I had never heard of her.  However Ralph over at Divas Hockey Ink published a post featuring her.  As soon as I saw her last name, I looked her up and discovered she's part Japanese and part Ukrainian.

I commented on his post that I might look for a copy for my Japanese athlete PC.  He ended up having an extra copy which he generously sent my way.

International Item #3Italian Stickers, Japanese Skaters

1979 Panini Hockey '79 Stickers

These forty-seven year old Panini stickers feature Japanese hockey players from possibly the 1978 Ice Hockey World Championships. were sent to me as part of Angus' (over at Dawg Day Cards) December care package.

1979 Panini Hockey '79 Stickers

I tried to pair these puzzle stickers up and scan them, but they kept sliding around on the glass.  Ended up using these 1948 Bowman card sleeves and a 9-pocket page to keep them in place.

And if you're confused about the Italian ties, these stickers were printed in Italy:

1979 Panini Hockey '79 Stickers #244

Angus made another contribution for this international post...

International Item #4Canadian Cardboard

I'm an O-Pee-Chee fanboy.

1972 O-Pee-Chee #169

It wasn't always that way.

1972 O-Pee-Chee #170

Back in the 80's and 90's, I would have traded them for their Topps counterparts.

1978 O-Pee-Chee #177

These days, they're equals... companions... counterparts.

1981 O-Pee-Chee #261

Simply put.  They're both awesome and highly cherished pieces of cardboard.

1985 Leaf #28

The same thing applies to Donruss and Leaf.

I'm grateful that something clicked in my brain, encouraged me to openminded and give trading cards produced outside of our country a chance.

Thank you Angus, Ralph, and Ryan for all of these awesome additions to my collection!

And here is today's question of the day:

Are you watching or following the World Baseball classic?

If so...

Who do you think will win it all?

I've watched a few prediction videos and it seems like the vast majority are picking one of three teamsUSA, Dominican Republic, or Japan.  My brain is picking the loaded Team USA squad led by Judge, Witt, Skenes, and Skubal.  My heart bleeds Samurai Blue.  But my gut tells me the Dominican Republic's bats are going to power them to the 2026 title.

Whoever you pick... it's gonna be a fun and entertaining two weeks of baseball.

Happy Saturday and sayonara!

The Kamen Rider playing cards are from Terebi (TV) Magazine February Issue. It's a kids publication (3~5 yo) that started in 1971. It's actually still in circulation today.

We watched US vs Brazil last night as a family. It was good to watch baseball again and really liked watching Logan Webb pitch. Have rarely ever seen him pitch and liked his approach.

The first Vida wins it.

I'm watching the U.S. team.
Will probably start watching other teams when it gets serious - like the semifinals maybe.

Completely ignoring the WBC here, but paying lots attention to all the OPC cards.

I watched it early in the mornings in 2017 while sleeping on the couch with a newborn waiting for my wife to get home from work to take over kid duty so I could go to work. I probably won’t have as much opportunity to watch this year, but will still follow and root for US, Netherlands, and Nicaragua in that order.

So glad you got that card and whenever I have any dupes I usually help others when they are looking for a certain card. You have a beautiful collection and I have done the same thing. I have a large collection of just about every kind of card as I like finding oddball items. I find the hobby today enjoyable by collecting things that are not as costly but I like cards that are unique and I agree about the Topps Finest hockey cards. The colors of those card blend so nicely.

Yeah, I've been watching the WBC--well, mostly just the US games, but I'll probably watch other games when it gets down to the final 8 or at least 4. Guess I'd have to pick Japan as the most likely winner, but the US is looking pretty strong.

Neat stuff! it's great to see your PCs expand with the help of some new bloggers. The '79 Panini stickers are very impressive. I've seen those on COMC but never in person.

I will be following Canada in the WBC, though I cannot say who will win the tournament. Nice pics in this post, especially the stickers from '79

I've watched a few innings of each USA game so far. Would love to see a USA/Japan rematch.

My interest in baseball has left since Griffey retired, but things liike the world baseball classic and all star game I have never been a fan of. I just like the pro sports as pro sports with those teams.

I call a USA/Japan championship, with USA winning it all!

No idea who wins the WBC but I'm glad that it'll be more exciting that way! And cool stuff from Angus, Ralph, and Ryan here. Japanese/Ukrainian is quite the ethnic background, much less for a hockey player. Very cool to see Japanese hockey team stickers too! My favorites in the post are the OPCs, though--especially that second-year Rickey.

I won't be watching the WBC. I watched the Red Sox play Puerto Rico in a practice game and it was a slog to even watch it. The constant music/NOISE coming from the crowd is just terrible. You would think they could at least edit that out for tv.

batting out of order - usa vs. dominican republic should be fun to watch.

johnnys trading spot - me either. but two of the three teams i figured would be in the running still are

junichi - thanks for the info. i'll update my blog post as soon as i publish these comments

uncle charlie's shoebox - webb is a workhorse and very popular among giants fans. i hope he has a great season... unless he's playing the padres or a's

elliptical man - semifinals are here! i tried to watch last night's game between venezuela and japan, but it wasn't on any of my streaming services :(

cardboredom - just wrote another post with more opc :D

jeremya1um - us plays today. should be a great game.

rr - thanks again for the card. i written about my obsession with 95/96 finest hockey before. i was literally addicted to finding refractors in packs and trading for them on forums back in the day

brett alan - i was bummed that japan lost last night, but happy to see the us still in it. today's game should be pretty awesome

chris - i wasn't familiar with those 79 stickers, but i love them. wish i could find more info on that team from japan

robert - i was quietly rooting for team canada.

the lost collector - well now that the usa/japan rematch isn't a possibility, it'd be cool to see an usa/italy rematch.

matt - i understand the griffey thing. i feel the same way about hockey, but instead of griffey it was marleau

ginko-5 - i was bummed to hear about japan's loss, but at least team usa still has a chance to win it all

dennis - yeah, that's quite the ethnic mix. not sure i've met anyone of that background before. i did have a classmate at sjsu who was part ukrainian. i think she was part korean... or maybe chinese.

adame - that's funny. one of the reasons i want to attend a game in japan one day is to see how the crowd interacts with the game. i'm not a very social person, but in that situation... the more noise, the better. of course that might all change if i end up having a panic attack :D

I am fine with crowd interaction and noise. I am talking about the drums, horns, music, and whatever those clackity spinny things are. To me it is just as annoying as a crowd full of Vuvuzelas. I also realize the atmosphere is way different in person than it on tv. Also there is also a chance they were cranking the crowd noise up for TV.
