Calm Before the Storm

Collecting sports cards can be relaxing.  Rooting for sports teams can be quite the opposite.  Today's a big day for one of my favorite teams and I've been stressing out about it for the past week.

I figured I'd try to distract myself this morning, but catching up with a pair of items from Ryan's advent calendar that could be classified as relaxing or calming.

Let's start with the helpful hint that he wrote:

This was one of the most obvious haikus from his package.  It refers to this miniature bonsai tree:

The planting portion was super simple and took less than a minute to complete.  Now the waiting game begins.  I'm planning on taking the pot into my classroom.  Maybe watching it grow will help some of my 8th graders relax too.

The other "calming" present was building block related.  Here's his haiku:

And here's the gift:

It's one of those blind bags that contains one "Space Collection" build.  Here's the one I received:

Building block sets are often pretty therapeutic, but this little sucker was a challenging build due to its small size.  Here's a photo that shows the size compared to the mini bonsai planter, a Lego mini-figure, and a Kenner SLU:

The astronaut will accompany the bonsai pot and join the other Lego builds I have displayed in my classroom.

While on the topic of building blocks, I wanted to show off one more Christmas related gift before discussing the storm that quickly approaching.

My friend's mom gave me this awesome Lego set:

2024 Lego Star Wars #75375

I've thought about buying the midi-scale Millennium Falcon for over a year, but I just never got around to doing it.  So I was blown away to see that this was waiting for me under their tree.  Unfortunately, I haven't had time to build it... but as soon as I do... I'll show you guys what it looks like.

Okay... now let's get to the sports section of this post.  In a couple of hours, the Seattle Seahawks will host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship GameDivision games always stress me outDivision games that involve the winner moving on to the Super Bowl is next level.

On one hand, I haven't been as impressed with the Seahawks defense since these guys:

2014 Prizm Red, White, & Blue #200

On the other hand, I'm not quite as confident in the Seahawks offense as I have been in the past.  I'm predicting a close game... but honestly have no idea who wins this game.  I've watched a ton of analysis and prediction videos... and I feel like even the experts are pretty torn.

At this point the only thing to do is sit back, watch the game, and see how things play out.  Let's go Hawks!

Here are today's questions of the day...

Do you ever get stressed out over your favorite sports teams?

Out of the four remaining football teams, are you rooting for any of them?

If so, who?

Happy Sunday and sayonara!

Great gifts! Bonzais are cool, but so is that Millennium Falcon!

1) I get stressed all the time over sports. I'm freaking out over the Sharks right now and they have plenty of time left in their season lol. And when the Rangers were playing the Astros in the ALCS in 2023, oh boy was that stressful.

2) Was rooting for the 49ers, but of the remaining teams I'm rooting for the Broncos. It would be awesome if their backup QB could win the Super Bowl for them.

1) No stress for me...gotta have a favorite before getting anywhere close to that point.

2) Not following football.

I only stress usually during THE GAME but also when it looks like a pitcher is throwing a perfecto or a no-no & I quickly have to know what prevented him achieving the perfecto should the announcer not explain it within the moment

Usually get excited in anticipation of the Bears playing but don’t let it bug me too much. Wish they had been playing the Seahawks right now instead of LA!!

That building block set looked stressful! I loved doing legos with my boys but now they’re grown they are capable of building really complex ones themselves! My oldest is really into the cars these days!

I don't think you're a fan if you don't stress over the big game.

As for the NFL playoffs, just about every game has gone the opposite of what I wanted, including the 2 games today. So that means the Patriots will end up winning the whole thing and I'm still not over them winning all those other ones.

Never its just a game, I get stressed out if a relative is sick or I can't pay my rent.Patriots.

I love the LEGO (and the bonsai tree). As for your questions, I am finding that I get less and less stressed as I get older. Perhaps it's the realization that my Reds are probably never going to be worth getting stressed out over? I mean, the ownership doesn't seem to care, why should I?!

As for the NFL, I'll be rooting for Seattle. Or, as I usually call it, "anyone but the Patriots"

I get very stressed watching my teams, mainly the Bengals and the Yankees. I'v also started to get stressed watching my kids games...which I didn't expect.

With that being said...Go Seahawks!

Those are some great gifts! That Lego set is intense. Let's go Patriots!

Calm sounds great (and the bonsai is cool!) but it's too late for us over here--we've already been hit by some storms (of snow). Enjoy building the Lego Falcon and here's to a more relaxing win for your Hawks in the big game!

'23 baseball playoffs-extreme stress. Other than that? Probably during the game but that's it. When I was younger??? All the time!

Yes there is stress with my favorite teams that usually is followed by heartache. "Sports is agony. We agree to suffer endlessly in exchange for the mere possibility of sublime rapture>" -Mike Duncan (writer of one chapter of Why We Love Baseball)

The division games are long over by the time I am commenting but I didn't have any skin in either game. I actually dislike every single one of the four teams. Of all the NFL teams they are all four at the very bottom of my list. Only the Ravens and Cowboys rank lower.

Hey its cool that you are starting a bonsai! I have about a dozen that I am at varying early stages of growing in a little corner of my yard. Most of them are ones I am growing from seeds that I've planted over the past few years (I have a few kuromatsu pines like yours, they are quite easy to grow). A good thing about living in Japan is that it is easy to find the nice pots for them on Yahoo Auctions or second hand shops pretty cheap!

Sorry it took me so long to reply to everyone's comments. Sometimes I get sidetracked and forget to check. Anyways...

ginko-5 - that's so awesome that you're a sharks fan. i really regret not supporting them the past few years. i was such a diehard fan for decades. the last thing i want to do is jump on the bandwagon when they're winning. but obviously i'm happy that they're doing well and i'm especially happy for all of those loyal fans who stuck with them

cardboredom - no favorite teams? that's definitely an interesting approach to sports and collecting. i'm jealous of the no stress part :D

johnnys trading spot - not sure i enjoyed the game, but i did enjoy the outcome

poison75 - i stress before and during a game. but win or lose, the stress eventually fades.

uncle charlie's shoebox - the bears had a great season. congratulations on both of those big comebacks against my beloved packers. talk about stressful. as for that astronaut build, it was fun, but very challenging. it's now displayed in my classroom

night owl - i'm so glad that the patriots didn't win the super bowl. if they had, i might not be sitting down and commenting right now.

sg488 - relatives getting sick or not making rent are definitely things i'd stress about as well. i guess it's about mindset. wish i could not care about silly things like sports

nachos grande - the bonsai tree hasn't shown any progress in two weeks. hopefully something will show soon. the way you feel about the reds is the way i feel about the a's. i think it's gets more stressful when you have higher expectations. by the way... very happy the seahawks won yesterday

the lost collector - that's funny about your kids games. i go to my co-workers kids games a few times a year and a lot of parents get really stressed out over the game too. i kinda wonder if my mom stressed out when i played :D

section 36 - haven't built the lego set yet. maybe over spring break. congratulations on the patriots making it to the super bowl.

dennis - hope things are starting to warm up in your area. i'm excited about building the millennium falcon. the big game was far from relaxing (until about 4 minutes left in the game), but i was happy with the outcome

michael d - you're the second commenter that says stress lowers with age. i'm already old, but i hope that theory kicks in for me soon

adam e - excellent quote. i don't hate the patriots, rams, or broncos. but i am happy the seahawks ended up winning the big game. i agree with you on the cowboys though. the only team lower than them are the 49ers (and sometimes bears).

sean - that's awesome. you should write a post and show some of them off on your blog. so far i haven't seen anything change with my bonsai. maybe it's too cold right now.
