I Assure You It's Fake

Lately, life has been pretty good.

My back hasn't been that sore.  I've had the chance to hang out with my parents and one of my best friends the past two weeks.  I don't need to report back to work until next Friday.  My snack supply inventory is fully stocked.  I finally discovered and purchased Stadium Club and Allen & Ginter blasters at Target (in Portland).  And Clerks arrived on Netflix on August 1st.

I own VHS and DVD copies of the iconic independent film, but the idea that I don't have to get off of my butt to watch one of my favorite 90's independent films makes it extra special.  Plus the timing couldn't be more perfect.

Two weeks ago, I received my COMC shipment and buried among the numerous autographs, rookies, and memorabilia cards I ordered for fellow bloggers was a small stack of Clerks trading cards.

Last year, Upper Deck finally gave card collecting fans of the film what they've been waiting for when they released 2017 Skybox Clerks.  I considered busting a box or two, but decided to see if I could find cheap singles online first.

COMC was the first place I looked and that's where I discovered these pretty cool manufactured relics...

These are probably pretty cheesy to those who have never seen the film, but if you have and you're a fan, I'm sure you can find one or two that appeal to you.

My personal favorite is the Happy Scrappy Hero Pup Video:

Randall's scene with the mom and little kid is one of the funniest parts of the movie.  It's definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK and could be deemed offensive to some.  But if you're okay with inappropriate language and "adult video" humor, then there's an outside chance you could appreciate this clip:

This card was the final card I needed for the set and by far the most expensive.  It set me back $2.95.  To put this in perspective, the other twelve cards cost me only $11.25.

I'm not sure what I'll actually do with a manufactured relic card set in the long run, but considering the entire set was only $14.20, I can slide them into top loaders and use them as drink coasters without blinking.

Well... I'm headed off to Hulu to watch Kalifornia... which is another classic 90's independent film.

What about you...

What are your favorite 90's independent films?

Would you ever consider buying trading cards for these films?

Outside of the two movies I've already listed, I'd add The Usual Suspects, American History X, Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, and Reservoir Dogs.

And even though I don't see it happening anytime soon, I'd definitely collectKeyser Söze rookie card, a game used Lebowski bowling shirt card, or a Mr. White toothpick prop card.

Okay... I realize two days in a row of movie related posts is a bit excessive.  Thursday's post should be baseball related.

Until then...

Happy Tuesday and sayonara!

The closest I can come to a 90s indy film favorite is Napoleon Dynamite and that's not from the 90s.

The Clerks cards are interesting...count me among the ones who's never seen it.

Never saw Clerks.. I'm not one for movies really..

I'm not really one for movie-based cards either.. Not sure why.

Usual suspects and clerks for sure, plus Singles and Trainspotting. I would def buy a paul westerberg related card if there were a singles soundtrack card set but otherwise not much interest in these sorts of cards

You can't go wrong with Tarantino. Clerks is an all time favorite along with Suspects. Lebowski is OK but I have never understood the love. The only one I would have to add is Dazed and Confused. McConaughey is hilarious. "That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I keep getting older, they stay the same age." -kills me!! I never knew about the Clerks set and will have to check those out. Kinda cool easy set... don't need anything from Clerks II though! I always enjoy your posts and it is great to mix it up every now and then.

Clerks II, the rooftop scene with Rosario Dawson dancing to MJ, damn.

I'm gonna buy some CHEWLIE'S GUM!

(Bought the base set of these and they're among the best non-sports cards I've ever purchased.)

I'm just hoping that there's no numbered-to-37 "I assure you it's fake" DNA relic set in there.

Also. El Mariachi!

And with Ginter's Dude inserts last year I was so hoping there was a The Dude card with a rug relic to tie it all together.

commishbob - love me some napoleon dynamite. i threw it on for my students when the rest of their classmates went on their end of the school year field trip.

mike matson - completely understand. i'm sure i'll find something i don't want to collect one day ;)

gcrl - transporting was awesome! definitely a classic.

doug hoback - i should have added dazed and confused to the list.

john miller - i liked clerks ii. not quite as much as the original, but it was good. good call on Rosario Dawson.

nick - my next step is to find an affordable (i mean cheap) base set.

nick vossbrink - i never saw el mariachi, but i just added it to the list.

rob - i definitely should have led off with that :)

Huge Kevin Smith/Clerks fan here..I've actually been to the real Quick Stop in Leonardo, NJ (and the Secret Stash, which is in Red Bank) My nephews and I bought a Buddy Christ figure (Dogma) and the Clerks animated series on DVD. There's only six episodes but we laughed out loud watching them. The manu-patches are neat, I bought the first one on COMC myself.

I don't think I've seen Kalifornia but I've seen all the other movies you mentioned. I was/am a huge Quentin Tarantino fan as well-Pulp Fiction blew my mind. Miramax made some fantastic flicks back in the day. It's too bad the guy who ran it was a total scumbag.

These cards are awesome. I considered picking up some of the basecards from my next COMC order with you in mind. Looks like you beat me to the punch. I love all of Kevin Smith's movies and am literally just a few blocks away from his comic shop in Red Bank.

Another 90s Indie film I really enjoy is SLC Punk! starring Matthew Lillard. I was going through my big punk rock phase when that movie was released and loved it.

Very cool man relics

Nice Clerks relics! If they released this set back in the 90's I definitely would have picked up some packs. I second Nick's El Mariachi...hope you get to see that one!

Chris - I have the Clerks animated series too. Watched it way back in the day, but haven't seen it since. Maybe I'll bust it out this weekend. As for Tarantino... he definitely has some classics. I'd rank Kill Bill 1/2 up there with Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

Collecting Cutch - I'd love to one day visit the comic shop. Haven't seen it in awhile, but I used to watch Comic Book Men all the time. Never heard of SLC Punk!. Couldn't find it on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon. If it ends up landing on any of these in the future, I'll check it out.

Sport Card Collectors - Thanks

Jafronius - I stumble across dollar DVD's all the time at the flea market. If I see El Mariach, I'll grab it and give it a shot.
