Tuesday's post was the appetizer. Today's is the main course.
It covers the purchase of a pretty cool set, a super cool and hard to find set, and some items that take me back to my Little League days.
Considering that the next Branham Flea Market is only two days away... and these purchases were made almost five weeks ago... this post is long overdue. Let's get into it...
Purchase #1: The Pretty Cool Set $15
Remember the guy who sold me the Sears football posters and the 1976 Laughlin Diamond Jubilee set? He was back and I was very happy to see him.
The first set to catch my eye on his table was this 1978 Olde Cards Halsey Hall Recalls baseball set:
1978 Olde Cards Halsey Hall Recalls #20 Set
I had seen singles from this set before, but had no idea what they were.
1978 Olde Cards Halsey Hall Recalls #20
But with guys like Roy Campanella, Willie Mays and Ted Williams on the checklist... I was interested in it.
1978 Olde Cards Halsey Hall Recalls #21
A quick glance at the back dated it back to the 70's which intrigued me more. When you factor in the $15 price tag, there was no way I could pass up this set.
But this purchase could have been part of the "appetizer" post, because it's the next two items that I'm mostly excited about.
Purchase #2: The Super Cool Set $10
1974 Laughlin Old Time Black Stars Set
But I couldn't get the image of the Josh Gibson out of my head. I was thinking how cool it would be to own this card. Unfortunately the vendor didn't have the set with him the following month.
This time around he did and it was much more affordable. He told me since I was a frequent buyer, I could have it for $10. At the time I though it was a pretty cool deal. It wasn't until I got home and started researching this set that I discovered its true value. Let's just say this might just be my best flea market find of all-time in terms of monetary value.
But this isn't even the coolest purchase of the day...
Purchase #3: 7-11 Slurpee Cups $8
If you grew up in the 80's and enjoyed 7-11 Slurpees... you know exactly what these cups are.
The best part wasn't even the Slurpee. When you were finished drinking it, you would turn the cup over and see a false bottom.
The false bottom could be removed to reveal one 7-11 Slurpee Disc. I ended up purchasing over seventy cups (about 30 football and 40 baseball) that contained these discs:
Now unlike the Laughlin set, these don't hold much monetary value. However they hold a ton of nostalgic value to me.
Back in the 80's, I would ride my bike to 7-ll after baseball practice to grab a Slurpee. They didn't always have these special cups, but every now and then they would.
Back then Rickey Henderson was my favorite player... and I would have been stoked to pull him from the bottom of a cup:
1984 7-11 Super Star Sports Coins (West Region) #XXI
One of my favorite flea market hauls in a long time. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I have.
Happy Thursday and sayonara!

Fuji if you see another set of those OTBS pick up for me please & for $10 that was a good find kinda like my `15/`16 Upper Deck Hockey set I picked up for $16
I've seen those 7/11 discs quite often but never knew how they were packaged. We didn't have any local 7/11 stores (I think the closest one now is 100 miles away), so that would have been a nice find indeed. It looks like you cleaned up real well.
Slurpees and Slush Puppies. So much nostalgia, I can almost taste those wax cups heheh. Great haul, Fuji!
Fantastic finds! Never went to 7-11 as a kid so never knew how those coins made it in there. I wonder how often they got messed up by the drink.
Great find on that Laughlin set. If you ever break it up, I could use the Charleston and Rogan cards for my "Posnanski 100 top players" set!
OK, my thought on that Halsey Hall set was "there was a baseball player named Harley Davidson???" Turns out he's the illustrator of the set and got his own card. The rest of the set is players who played in the minors in the Twin Cities area before the Twins came to town.
That and the Laughlin set really are great finds. But don't tempt me with Slurpees--I love them but they're so bad for me!
You did great as always. Those Slurpee discs are so cool!
1) Great haul, I see why you're stoked about it. I bought all three of these deals too.
2) Because 7-11 stores weren't really around down here in FL or GA (accept maybe the big cities), I never experienced the Slurpee as a kid (actually still haven't had one) . Never got one of those discs as a kid. I have a lot now and have had many in the past but until this post I did not know how the discs were stored in the bottom of the cup. Still learning, Thanks!
3) About 2 years ago shortly after returning to FL from GA we now have a few 7-11's stores in Ocala. Never found the need to get a slurpee as we had Icee's (and still do) at other stores, lol.
So that's where those 7-11 Dodgers came from that you sent!
I was aware of 7-11 growing up but never actually saw one until I started working at a newspaper in Niagara Falls. There was a 7-11 on the next block. By then I was too old for Slurpees.
I know the Laughlin Old Time Black Stars set well -- very cool. That other set you started off with I've never heard of nor seen until now.
Awesome finds!
Getting a slurpee and hoping to get Bill Freehan was a daily thing for me.
Good Job! ✌️
Not to call the other stuff chopped liver, but I absolutely love the Slurpee coins! I had a somewhat similar experience to you in 2000 with the Pacific 7-11 coins. I may have cheated a bit and popped the bottoms to find some of the ones I was missing, though!
I'm happy you finally got to find your Rickey 41 years later :)
Congratulations on these fun pickups. 7-11 was the go to spot for packs of cards for me and my neighborhood friends back in 1978. I didn’t buy slurpees though.
Wow that's a great deal on the Old Time Black Stars set!
I had never heard of that 1978 Olde Cards set but as soon as I saw it my brain said I have some cards from a boxing set just like that. It is just kind of like that but I am pretty sure the boxing set was used as the inspiration for these baseball cards. Look up 1947 Cummings and Son Boxing and you will see what I mean.
I never heard of that TBS set but once I plugged it into eBay search, WOW!!!!! If I was you I would check his booth first every time I was at that flea market and buy every copy he has, even if they are $50 each. lol
Great stuff as always! Wish I was there browsing stuff with you! Thanks as always doe sharing!
poison75 - lol. i doubt he has another one, but the next time i see him i will ask. unfortunately he wasn't there when i went this past saturday
jupiterhill - there definitely were more 7-11's in my area 30 years ago. the one i went to when i was a kid is still open, but there are more than a handful that have closed their doors
gregory - oh man... i love slush puppies. i think out of all the frozen drinks, they're my favorite. i only really saw them at the local amusement parks, but i loved how they had a bunch of different flavors to choose from
bo - i actually bought some coins off of ebay a while back and they looked like they might have been damaged by soda or some other liquid.
mr haverkamp - gonna keep this set together. hadn't heard of posnanski's 100 top players, so i looked it up. cool list. looks like he has charleston at #5 (unless there's an updated list). i wasn't even familiar with him until i watch a video about this set a few weeks ago
brett alan - i thought the same thing about mr. davidson. i enjoy an occasional slurpee... usually during the summer. heck, maybe i'll grab one this week.
the lost collector - thanks. yeah... nowhere near a complete set though. collation on those coins were pretty bad
johnnys trading spot - glad i was able to share some new info with you and others. i love icee's too. it'd be fun to do a taste taste between them, slurpees, and slush puppies
night owl - yup. they might not have seemed like it, but those two discs were "cup" fresh :D
matt - thank you sir
john sharp - i remember the days when you could grab a pack of cards from 7-11. they should start carrying them again :D
dennis - i wasn't familiar with those 2000 pacific 7-11 coins. there's a gwynn on the checklist. i'm officially on the hunt.
gcrl - if they were smart, they (7-11) would start selling cards again. i probably would stop by more often than i do now (3 or 4 times each summer).
jeff b - thanks. one of my best finds (in terms of monetary value) ever.
adame - i definitely see the similarities. btw... after i looked up the set, i realized i own a card from this set. the boxer's name is dado marino. i bought it because my dad was a fan of his
sumomenkoman - one of these days buddy. one of these days.
Excellent finds! You kinda teased us with the true value of that OTBS set, as if the vendor reads the blog and would get upset haha.
Holy. Moly. Nice snag on the NLB set. And yeah I agree with you about being more stoked on them slurpee cups.
jafronius - yeah, not sure how i'll handle that conversation the next time i run into that vendor. we've talked on three separate occasions and have gotten to know each other. that being said... i'm not sure if i want to tell him he sold me this hidden treasure for $10. i guess i'll just play it by ear.
nick vossbrink - the laughlin set my just be my greatest bargain... and the slurpee set is arguably my favorite nostalgic find at the flea market.
