A Three Hour Tour

Adrenaline.  That is exactly what was rushing through my body as I stepped through the doors and into the Bay Area Sports Cards & Collectibles Expo this past weekend.  It was without any exaggeration the best card show I had attended in years.

The promoter advertised 200 tables... and I believe it.  It was held in an old Forever 21 store, so the venue was huge and dealers were plentiful and spaced out really well.

In fact, the only downside were two problems I encountered.  The first one involved a brief five minute period when some people joined me at a table and had zero regard for personal space or common courtesy.  The vendor had six to ten super shoe boxes lined up and these people decided to start digging into the same box as me.  Had I not been in the last box... I would have moved... but I only had two rows left and refused to budge.  I stood my ground as one of them bumped my elbow multiple times.

The other issue wasn't anyone's fault... but my own.  The show might have been the largest I attended in decades, however I only managed to check out five or six dealers' boothsWhy?  That's because I spent three hours with one dealer.  and by the time I was finished, I was tired and my back was sore.

I'm not complaining though, because he was the first dealer I stopped at and I'm glad I spent most of my budget with him.  This is the image that caught my eye and made me stop at his booth:

I'm a sucker for bargains and right off the bat, I noticed a dollar table with complete sets, Kenner SLU's, stadium giveaways, and other knick-knacks.  I ended up picking up eighteen items for $15:

Outside of the Hank Aaron media guide, I don't have plans to write about any of these dollar items in the near future.  However if there's anything you'd like to see in more detail, leave a comment down below and I'll try to accommodate you.

The vendor had a bunch of cards too.  I ended up focusing on his bargain boxes which were broken down into three categories: 8 for $1, 5 for $1 (or 25¢ each), and 10 for $4 (or 50¢ each).

On Sunday, I showed off this shoebox filled with goodies I picked up from his bargain bins.  There is honestly way too much to show off in a single post, so I'll be writing about the contents of this box throughout the summer.

However, here's a sampling of what I picked up...

The cards featured in the above 9-pocket page were pulled from the dealer's 8 for $1 boxes.  If you wanted to know how I could spend three hours at one booth, it's because I sifted through every single box this guy had.

Here's a look at some of the stuff I purchased from his 50¢ bin:

These boxes were mainly serial numbered cards, but there were some other items like rookie cards, autographs, and memorabilia cards.

Honestly the 8 for $1 and 5 for $1 boxes held way better bargains, so I focused most of my attention and money on those.

Most of the oversized stuff you see in this box were from the vendor's 5 for $1 boxes.

In honor of today being National Camera Day, I figured I'd show case this awesome Vladimir Guerrero card I purchased for 20¢:

1998 Topps Super Chrome #3

Thanks to bloggers like Nick and Gavin, this image has been on my radar for awhile.  This Super Chrome version looks exactly like his regular base card, but is almost twice as large.  Unfortunately, I had to restore it a little as all of the Super Chrome cards I purchased were a little hazy out of the box:

But it wasn't anything a microfiber towel, some water, and a little elbow grease couldn't handle.

Here are the other Super Chrome singles I grabbed from his box:

In hindsight, I think the dealer had a complete set.... but I only pulled guys who fit into my Player PC's.

My favorite from the bunch is this Clemente:

1998 Topps Super Chrome #21

The original plan was to show off a few more oversized singles, but I think I'll just wrap up this post on a high note.  If you want to see more goodies from this box, then you are in luck... because there will at least be a few future posts dedicated to them.

In the meantime...

When you think of great photography, is there any card in your collection that immediately comes to mind?

I look forward to reading your responses.  Happy Tuesday and sayonara!

Man, what a great show for you! I tend to stick around one dealer at my usual one and spend hours there, so I have the same angry back when I'm done as well. You got some steals from that dollar bin and in the rest as well. Knothole Gang! Those Super Chromes look awesome (I'm trying to remember if I have any) thanks to some great photos. And that brings to mind Stadium Club, which has some of the best photography you'll find on cards.

I'm glad you'll be taking the time to show off more of what you got, especially if this great stuff is any indication!

2001 Stadium Club Kenny Lofton (#97).

You got some good stuff. The Payton Wheaties box, the Taurasi, and the Clemente stand out to me.

Is that the legendary 1989 Leesley monster trucks set? I have been chasing them for literally decades.

May be more iconic than great photography but I love every card in my collection that shows the catch by willie mays.
Sounds like a great show. You would think that people would be more aware of personal space now more than ever but then again people suck.

Great stuff! That random $1 stuff had to have been a lot of fun to see.

Some of the new Stadium Club cards have some great photos.

Boom, you always score the deals!!

You most certainly did well. Lots of great stuff. As for the card that pops into my mind ...is the 2016 TSC Randy Johnson.

The one card that always pops into my head as great photography is the 1972 Clemente,as for the best photography brand is Upper Deck and I still hope one of these days they can get back to making BB,FB,AND BSK.

Wow, what a haul! Love dealers like that! Lots of bargains. This Topps Chrome Supers are fantastic and a couple of the cards on the 8/$1 page have me drooling.

Cue The "Gilligan's Island" Theme Song

Now you have the Gilligans Island song stuck in my head.
I can’t really think of specific cards, but many Stadium Club cards or any card with a picture from Ron Modra usually has a good photo.
If you are chasing that Super Chrome set, I believe I still have an Andy Pettite and Nomar Garciaparra from it. I also have an A Rod, but I got it signed by him at a game, so that one is staying in my collection.

You did well, Fuji. Looks like an awesome show. SLUs for a buck?! That's really cool.

Can't wait to get back to a card show. Looks like a great time. Plenty of cool cards. The Eric Daivs SLU is probably my favorite. Simple I know but fun. And love the small sets like the Toys R Us sets.

Don't think I've ever seen those Super Chromes before - that's probably my all-time favorite Vlad card, and one of the first that comes to mind when I think about great card photography. I didn't give '98 Topps much of a chance for a long time, but I've come to realize there's some great photos in that set.

Also, I feel your pain on the personal space issue at that table. Probably my #1 pet peeve at card shows.

For some reason the song "Cruel Summer" played in my head as I read this post. Maybe because of how rude the people at your table were. Even though, judging from your pickings, the day was anything but "cruel". Way to start the summer off with a bang 💪😉☀️

I'm thinking that those Hostess panels will end up generating some positive blog activity.

Looks like it was a really fun show! I love the photo on that Guerrero card, its very imaginatively shot.

I'm a big fan of cards with nice photos on them. With my Japanese collection I really like a lot of the Calbee sets from the 70s because they have such an interesting selection of photos.

Went to the first big show in a while in May, and it's coming back around next weekend. I'm hoping most of the obnoxious jerks like you encountered are concentrated around the graded mojo tables where I won't be.
Don't think I have that Fisk!

dennis - thankfully the back is returning to normal. i can live with tender and sore. luckily it wasn't one of those "can't move for a week" situations. agree 100% on stadium club. been one of my favorite products the past few years.

elliptical man - had to look it up on comc... but that lofton is awesome! i was pretty excited to grab that taurasi. just saw that she scored her 9,000th point this past weekend

billy kingsley - it's not a complete set. just a fourth of it. lmk if there are specific singles you need. i'd send you the whole stack, but i actually picked them up for my friend's kid who loves monster trucks... so i need to pass at least a few of them along to him.

gcrl - the mays catch is awesome. i can see why you collect cards depicting it. i just don't understand why people have to stand so close that they bump elbows with you (especially since there was so much space)

jeff b - yeah... i love dollar tables that contain complete sets... and i love me some stadium club too.

sumomenkoman - sounds like he's gonna have another show. if he does, maybe you can come up.

johnnys trading spot - that johnson is sweet! i remember seeing it one someone's blog back in the day.

sg488 - love that clemente and i'm with you on upper deck having excellent photography. their 1993 baseball set sets the standard

daniel wilson - i kind of dropped the ball. probably should have just grabbed the entire stack of topps supers. and there were definitely a lot of cards in the 8 for $1 boxes that i should have bought too.

anonymous - was planning on adding the song, but forgot. glad someone caught the reference though

jeremya1um - stadium club tends to deliver the highest percentage of cool photography on an annual basis. i'll have to search up modra's photography. thanks for offering to help with the super chrome set, but i'm not building it. i actually think he had close to a complete set... but i just picked out my pc guys

the lost collector - thanks aj. i kinda dropped the ball on the slus by not grabbing any. the problem was i didn't want to carry them around. but in hindsight, i could have just opened them up right there (since i mainly want the cards).

bulldog - hope you get to one soon. i've in the process of collecting all of the toys r us rookies sets. not sure which ones i already had though, so i picked up both

nick - i remember when you showed off that vlad. it's so awesome. after looking at these supers more closely... i've really grown to appreciate the 98t set myself. yeah, the personal space is my #1 pet peeve too

big tone - love that song. i immediately think of karate kid when i hear it.

jon - those hostess panels were probably my favorite purchase of the day. can't believe nobody snatched those up before i got there.

sean - my favorite calbee shots are the well cropped action shots. they pair really well with those old school uniforms.

gca - hope you have fun at the show this weekend. i was going to keep the fisk, but it sounds like you'd appreciate it more than me. i'll toss it into your next care package.

I loved that 'bargain box' guy's table too! I could only spend about 15 minutes there on Saturday before show opened and I grabbed a few cool things (Stadium Club Members only parallels, Fleer miniature box sets, Topps micro box set) but wish I had more time. Wish I'd have seen the hostess panels then!

mr haverkamp - gotta say... i'm glad you didn't see those hostess panels. but glad i got a chance to see you and catch up.

xavier higgins - one of our world's greatest mysteries for sure.

Anything Stadium Club is on the list for great photography. One particular card though? 1993 Upper Deck Jim Eisenreich catching a ball in the rain with water splashing everywhere.
