When it comes to collecting, my mother was the one who would buy me packs of cards at the grocery store and the local pharmacy when I was a kid. My dad never understood my fascination with sports cards, but he's the reason I'm a Green Bay Packers fan. I've told this story before, so I won't bore you with it again.
But I wanted to showcase the latest addition to my Green Bay Packers PC:
2004 Fleer Greats of the Game Autographs #GBA-BS
Bart Starr played his final NFL game the year before I was born, so outside of NFL Films, I never had the opportunity to see him play. But the guy is a legend, so I obviously knew who he was. Plus he's one of my father's favorite players from back in the day.
I've had this particular autograph in my crosshairs for a long time. Fleer Greats of the Game's on-card autographs are always welcome additions to my collection, but this card doesn't pop up very often. According to Beckett it's a short print that usually sells in the $200+ range.
It just happened to pop up on one of my eBay searches as an auction. Although I wasn't expecting to win it, I still threw down a bid with a few seconds remaining and ended up being the highest bidder. It wasn't cheap, but it's a awesome addition to my Green Bay Packers collection. Plus it reminds me of my parents and our mutual love for the Packers.
Happy Tuesday and sayonara!
Greats of the Game! It's a beauty for sure. Here's to the moms (and dads) who bought us cards when we were kids :)
ReplyDeleteGreat card! And he has a nice signature as well.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for NFL Films, otherwise most of us wouldn't have been able to see just how great a lot of these guys were. And that is a very cool autograph, of course all of the Fleer Greats are, but still...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Green Bay sure has had their share of legendary quarterbacks.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking card. "Waiting for a Star to Fall" by Boy Meets Girl was a song guilty pleasure of mine on a side note.
ReplyDeleteMine too! Such a great sax solo.
DeleteMy mom was like this too. I’d watch my siblings with the understanding she’d bring me a pack back from the grocery store or CVS.
ReplyDeleteYou can never go wrong with on-card autos! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm not even a football collector and I'd be proud to own that one. A real beauty Fuji, congrats!
ReplyDeleteSweet card. Awesome tribute.
ReplyDeleteGrowing up as a Baltimore Colts fan I considered the Pack as our #1 rival and my hatred for Starr and the rest was real. Having long grown out of that foolishness I've come to really appreciate and admire how great a quarterback Bart Starr was. That's a really sweet pick-up. Congrats.
ReplyDeletedennis - heck yeah! there's a real good chance i wouldn't be a part of this community and hobby without my mom's support and my dad's hard earned money (used to buy me those packs)
ReplyDeleteangus - love it when you can see each letter of their name
jon - so true. i could sit around and watch nfl films all day. well. got way too much on my plate right now... but i wish i could sit around and watch nfl films all day
hackenbush - yeah. their fans have been pretty lucky. now if they can just get rodgers some receivers to throw to ;)
bulldog and defgav - embarrassed to admit this, but i know the words to that song ;)
the lost collector - like dennis said... here's to all of the awesome moms (and dads) around the world who bought packs of cards for their children
sumomenkoman - thanks. probably the last starr signature i'll be adding to the collection. glad it's a nice one
shoeboxlegends - thank you. i feel the same way about legendary athletes who play sports i don't collect.
marc - thank you.
commishbob - lol. reminds me of how i felt about joe montana and jerry rice as a kid. couldn't stand those guys... but i'd gladly add their signatures to my collection these days.
