One of my latest interests has been PSA/DNA certified autographed rookie cards from the 80's and 90's. I have also been wanting to add a Ken Caminiti autograph to my collection for many years.
So when I saw his autographed rookie card on eBay, I added it to my sniping program...
I was pretty excited when the dust settled and I got the email that I was the winner of this auction. I immediately headed over to the listing to pay for my purchase and as soon as I looked at my card a little closer... it felt like I had been punched in the gut.
I can't believe that I didn't notice the 1989 Donruss baseball card design the first time I read this listing. The whole time I thought I was bidding on his 1988 Donruss rookie card. I guess that makes me an eBay idiot... AGAIN.
I really need to start paying closer attention while browsing eBay listings. Oh well... at least I didn't end up paying an arm and a leg, like the Clayton Kershaw incident.

To be fair, the seller did misrepresent what he had to draw clicks. So, it's not just on you.
ReplyDeleteThe listing does say "1988" and "Rookie", so Krukcards is not without fault in this. I'm an eBay newbie, so I don't know if there's anything to be done about that (or that you'd want to do).
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but "Donruss Discombobulation" makes me think of the insults that Dr. Smith hurled at the Robot on "Lost In Space".... "You bumbling bucket of bolts! Doddering dunderhead! Nickel-plated nincompoop! Jabbering junkheap! Bubble-headed booby!"
Lol. I've just been looking for an excuse to use the word. Now that you've mentioned it... I can totally picture Dr. Smith saying that.

ReplyDeleteunrelated aside....I once played golf in a foursome at a Special Olympics charity event with Caminiti. Two things... he had interesting tattoos...and he hit a golf ball about as far as any man alive, though rarely where he was aiming it. Between him and the Special Olympians, that was one memorable round of golf.

You have reasonable support to try and refuse the sale through eBay/Paypal, it is listed incorrectly in the title.
ReplyDeleteYeah. The guy's title is wrong, but I should have looked at photo more closely. I decided to eat the cost. If I ever pick up the 1988, then maybe I'll relist this card to recover some of my costs.

DeleteI can't fault you too bad for your eBay mistake, but I have a bunch of Cami cards autographed. My uncle was really good friends with him when he was coming up through the minors and got myself and my brother bats, batting gloves, cards, etc.
ReplyDeleteNice. It's a shame he passed away at such a young age. He went to high school about 10 miles from where I grew up... and we both attended the same college.
