Sports cards are like women (or men, if that's your preference). There are plenty of options for people to choose from.
Unfortunately when it comes to women, I was cursed with being picky... which probably explains why I'm still not married. But in terms of cardboard, I'm pretty openminded. In fact it's pretty rare for me to find a trading card that doesn't have at least one positive trait.
Let's take a look at my 2011 Upper Deck World of Sports autograph of Olympic gold medalist... Bruce Jenner:
I love Jenner's signature. He's got a really nice autograph and the blue ink really stands out on the beige background. I can also appreciate the overall card design, which incorporates a colorful stamp-like track and field logo with the globe's lines of longitude and latitude in the background.
But where in the world is Bruce?
It's one thing to create cards without team logos. I'm not a fan, but I accept that others appreciate them. I'm even willing to overlook the sticker autograph. But a sports card without a picture of the athlete? This is absolute cardfoolery! And it takes things to the next level. When it comes to collecting sports cards, one of my favorite things is looking at photos or illustrations of my favorite athletes.
Kudos to those who find this product attractive. Without your support this product would have been an epic fail. In fact, someone had to pull this Jenner, so I could purchase it for three bucks and use it in a blog post.
Happy Wednesday and sayonara!

Little chocolate donuts is what I think when I think of Jenner (and try to forgot his step-kids):

Lol. I've only seen one episode of that show and I don't remember seeing Bruce. But there was plenty of Kim and Kourtney. If I didn't hate reality tv so much, I'd probably watch it again just for those two.
DeletePanini did something similar with its "Cooperstown Credentials" cards a couple of years ago (check out the Nachos Grandes blog on Larkin: http://fanofreds.blogspot.com/2013/10/barry-larkin-collection-211-2012-panini.html). It was to suck in all of us OCD player collectors into buying a card without any photo.
ReplyDeleteWow. I remember seeing these a while back. But thanks to you... I can't get that atrocity out of my head. That design is very, very bad.
DeleteI am with you there, a card without an athlete just isn't the same. I would be tempted to create a custom card with Jenner and lift the auto sticker off of this card and put it on the custom card.
ReplyDeleteIf I had any of the skills that some of you guys have... I'd consider it.
DeleteThat's hilarious.Sorry not laughing at, but with you,If you're laughing ,too, that is ;) I can equate It to having an autographed ticket stubb or dollar bill.
ReplyDeleteIt's okay. I'm totally okay with the laughter. Picked up this card specifically for this post. If it was a dollar more, I would have passed.
DeleteHes still a sports icon and the card is more than worth the price you paid for it.
DeleteYeah and a cool addition to my cardfoolery pc ;-)
DeleteOh... how the mighty have fallen.
