That's sort of how I feel about some cards that I recently purchased off of eBay. Now prepare yourself, because what I'm about to show isn't suitable for everyone.
There's no sense delaying the inevitable. Feast your eyes on this bad boy...
How addicted to cardboard am I? I'm so addicted that I went out and purchased an autographed memorabilia card of Tracy Hackler. Yup... you read it correctly. I've officially lowered my cardboard standards to the point where I'm collecting cards of Panini employees.
This card eventually led me to chasing down three of his co-workers:
How much can you expect to pay for autographs of Panini employees? I'm embarrassed to admit this... but I spent a total of $15.43 (shipping included).
In my defense... it's important to remember that these purchases were made during one of those bi-polar moments.
On one hand, I'm excited to own a quartet of Panini employee autographed memorabilia cards, because they're something different and unique. However part of me thinks that this quartet of Panini employee autographed memorabilia cards are silly and the epitome of "cardfoolery".
Oh well... that's who I am as a person, teacher, and as a collector. And while we're on the topic of bi-polar collecting, here is today's question of the day:
Are there any cards that you love and hate at the same time?

I love my Reggie Jackson rookie, but hate how much it cost me back in the pre-eBay days. I could buy a dozen of them today for the price I paid.

DeleteI'm gonna say multi-player cards, in general. I love 'em because they can be interesting. But I hate 'em because I sort my collection by player, and I have major OCD issues, so I can't put multi-player rookie cards, for example, with any one player, even if there's an obvious star of the bunch.

When I was going through the COMC Challenges, I found several cards that were "I gotta have this" moments. Not on the level of the Jim Moore, but still a couple shameful acquisitions.

DeleteI love some of the higher end cards I've bought over the years. Sometimes I look back and think. This is just cardboard. But then I do it again...

ReplyDeleteThe 80% I've completed on a Justin Smoak Manupatch Auto Nameplate set. They're still pretty cool, but the appeal they had to me a couple of years ago when I started the project is long gone.

DeleteDefinitely the 91/92 Upper Deck set. I bought far too many packs of these as a kid AND I even bought a factory set of the High Series and I am sure I paid far too much for that too. I like the memories of collecting the set, but I probably spent 400 bucks or so on packs and boxes with little to show for it....

Yep I have some of those Love/Hate cards. One is this cool Darryl Green Sticker AUTO/GU HELMET card http://www.sportscardforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=55979&d=1262768479 Those who know me from card forums and from reading my blog know that I do not like the GU concept, but this was a sweet Group Break card, most but not all of my GU cards have come from group breaks. I admit I have bought a few from time to time due to their looks or sometimes the serial number plus the looks. There is also the cut signature thing which for some of the same reasons I love/hate if the signature comes from something like a check or a blank index card I have no problems with it, but if it is a picture or another card and you can really tell where it came from I don't want anything to do with it. Searching in my blog's Labels for "cut signatures" brings 2 posts one the story of a cut signature where I figured out where it came from, and a general rant.
ReplyDeleteI can't stand it when companies cut up an autographed card and mount it on a new card, then call it a cut signature. TriStar took it to the next level. I have a Steve Sax cut signature card where they took a white index card and attached a signed label to it. It was the first card entered into my cardfoolery series:

Anything oddly sized, like 1989 Bowman, the giant Donruss cards of 1986 (I think), and 1994 Fleer Extra Bases, because they don't fit in regular sleeves and boxes. Yet once I get a few of any given set, I usually want to get at least all of the Cardinals from the set.

ReplyDeleteLove it: I was there and saw a master at the top of his craft. It was a very special day all-around for me, and despite striking out 13, the Giants still lost!

DeleteHonestly these are pretty cool. I have actually wanted a couple of them. But prices were kind of high when I originally looked for them. I mean, its a fun collectible that really isn't about the value and to me, collecting is never about that.
