Hey Fuji, what are the three most prized item in your collections? Value does not have to be a factor, but can be.
Out of all of the questions submitted last week, this is the one I found to be the most difficult and nearly impossible to answer. Why you ask? It's not because I lack treasured items. It's because I have too many. In fact I've spent the past week going through different items in my collection and found a ton I deem priceless and wouldn't trade or sell unless my life depended on it.
But BA Benny specifically asked for my top three, so three he shall receive:
Autographed Little League Ball
Two months ago, my nephew Ryan signed and gave me this ball. My collection of autographed balls includes several of my favorite players including Tony Gwynn and Kurt Suzuki (domo arigato The Big Kahuna), but the one my nephew gave me is in a league of its own.
Autographed Douglas Murray San Jose Sharks Ticket
1956 Topps #30 Jackie Robinson
If I had to pick my favorite card in my collection, this would be it. I mean where should I begin? The card design is beautiful. Jackie Robinson broke the MLB color barrier and is remembered (by me) as being a positive role model... something I strive to be everyday in the classroom. The only downside to owning this card is that I truly own the card of my dreams.
Okay... it's your turn:

It was tough, but I managed to come up with my trio of prized possessions.

Great posts. That ball is awesome... and the 65 Banks is sweet too. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteI'd say my Albert Pujols autograph from 04 Fleer sweet signatures numbered to 150.
ReplyDeleteI'll probably never be able to afford it... but a Pujols auto is definitely high on my wantlist.
Delete1. My 1989 Donruss Ken Griffey Jr. RC. It's the card that defined collecting for me. If I had to get rid of my collection, it would be the last card to go.
ReplyDelete2. My Bud Foster Autographed VT Lunchpail. It is the pinnacle of any VT collection.
3. My Bryan Randall Autographed photo inscribed "2004 ACC POY".
I really wanted to answer more of these with posts, but I'm strapped for time right now.
I totally understand the "strapped for time" issue. I appreciate you taking the time to share your response.
Delete1)Kevin Durant Meigray Certified Game Used Jersey. He scored 38 pts against the Warriors.
ReplyDelete2)Canton Hall of Fame Ball that has in person autos of Jerry Rice, Dan Marino, Steve Young, Eric Dickerson, Bob Griese, Joe Greene, John Randle, Ronnie Lott, Bob Lilly, and Carl Eller. Got this when I went to Canton a couple years ago to see Emmitt Smith inducted into the hall of fame
3)I would say a three way tie, to hard to chose (it could actually probably be like a 10 way tie) but my Michael Jordan Fleer BGS 7.5 RC, The Cowboys football i got autographed in Canton by Emmitt, Roger Staubach, Bob Lilly, and Rayfield Wright, and my Ty Cobb PSA/DNA Certified Autographed Check.
Wow... I understand why they're your prized possessions. Impressive!
DeleteI decided the most prized items are the ones that are the least replaceable.

Wow... that Nomar is awesome! Thanks for sharing.
DeleteI only have one, my personalized picture of Cal Ripken and myself from his last game. Written about here:
ReplyDeletehttp://eutawstreetcardboard.blogspot.com/2012/02/step-inside-way-back-machine.html
Wow... that might be one of the coolest pieces of memorabilia ever. Thanks for sharing.
Delete1. a Maurice Richard autograph my dad got for me one day when they happened to be seated next to each other on a plane
ReplyDelete2. of the cards, tie between the rookies of Gordie, Bobby Orr (posted earlier) and the Rocket
3. from the radios, a 1934 Rogers Batteryless cathedral that I restored as a kid.
But ultimately, they're just things. Neat things, but things.
Yeah... but if these things put smiles on our faces, then they're really cool things ;-) Thanks for sharing.
Delete1. 2005 Topps Jorge Posada Base Card
ReplyDeleteI'm sure a lot of people already know what's important about this card to me.
2. McFarlane Toys Ichiro Suzuki & Jim Thome Mini-Matchups Action Figures
A birthday present from a friend of mine back in 2004. Haven't seem him in years.
3. New York Yankees New Era Hat
This hat has been with me everywhere. From New York to Tokyo, from Yankee Stadium to Tokyo Dome. I wore it to my first day of Japanese school, my high school graduation, my first day of college and other events in my life. I might sport another cap now and again but for the most part it looks like I'm bring this hat with me to the grave when the time comes.
Honorable mentions:
*1993 Topps Derek Jeter Rookie Card
*2011 Brandon League Autograph (First auto card I ever got)
How often you wash that hat? LOL... just kidding. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteVarious items (this is exceedingly tough, as you mentioned). Some posted on already, so I'll link those here.
ReplyDelete1) A Matt Kemp signed 8x10 with a "The Bison" inscription that I got after a 14 1/2 hour campout.
http://plaschkethysweaterisargyle.blogspot.com/2011/08/matt-kemp-bought-me-dinner-and-i-got.html
2) A dual auto of Ryan Getzlaf and J.S. Giguere which commemorates the Ducks' lone Cup victory.
http://plaschkethysweaterisargyle.blogspot.com/2012/07/is-there-card-that-invokes-championship.html
3) Three signed books from Clayton Kershaw, all personalized in some fashion with various inscriptions (including a very unique and one of a kind "Texas Two-Step" inscription). One of the more low-key and intimate signings I've been to, and Clayton and his wife were fantastic and extremely nice. I also picked up a fourth book personalized with a Happy Birthday message for my best friend. All of the proceeds from the signing went to charity as well, which was cool.

Getzlaf & Kemp? I never would have guessed.
DeleteI apologize for the sarcasm... I'm tired and that's just my type of humor when I'm like a cranky little baby. Thanks for sharing!
1 - My Joe Namath Auotgraphed Football.
ReplyDelete2 - My Don Larsen and Yogi Berra dual signed perfect game photo.
3 - My Hank Aaron triple relic auto card.
Man... one day I'd love to add a Hank Aaron autograph to my collection. One day.
DeleteWell, if I have to choose:

I need to find some nice 1975 starter lots... thanks for sharing.
DeleteTry this one on for size:

Thanks,
Dawgbones
Holy smokes... that was the largest collection of prized possession trifectas I've ever witnessed.
DeleteSimilar to you Fuji
ReplyDelete1) Autographed team baseball from my daughters team i coached
2) Autographed photo of me and Wayne Gretzky
3) My Toronto Maple Leaf jersey that I had when I was a kid (during the 60"s)
Wow... that's a pretty cool list. I wish I would have kept some of my jerseys from the 80's.
DeleteAnother post where I wasn't sure I'd go at first... but certainly upbeat:
ReplyDeletehttp://thiscardiscool.blogspot.com/2012/08/eyes-on-prize-thinking-outside-box.html
I tell my students to try to think outside of the box... well done sir.
DeleteIt's brief and to the point, but here it is:
ReplyDeletehttp://playattheplatedude.blogspot.com/2012/08/working-fast.html
Nice call with #3... didn't think of that. Good choice.
DeleteHmmm, this is a tough one!
ReplyDeleteI'll say #1 is my Ice Cats team signed shirt. It inspired a whole collection of mine and it's the result of tons of post game signings during my childhood. The shirt rules and I'd never leave without it!
#2 would be my 4 Seneca Wallace 1/1's. They're spectacular.
And #3...hmmm...either the Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for SNES insert card (it came in the box) or the You Crash the Game exchange that I got through the mail when he hit a homerun. Those are both awesome cards and I wouldn't want to lose either of them.
I forgot about that Griffey SNES insert card... I need to pick one up. Thanks for sharing.
DeleteHere are my three. That was a toughy!
ReplyDeletehttp://thelostcollector.blogspot.com/2012/08/my-three-prized-possessions.html
You're right... I've never had the privilege to attend any of my favorite teams championship clinching games. That would truly be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteWow... never been called an icon before (not even by my estudiantes). Thank you for the kind words. I'm truly honored to know you and the rest of my buddies across the pond.
DeleteLike everyone, limiting this to three is almost impossible. But I'll take a stab at it. I would say (in no particular order):
ReplyDelete1-1973 All-time HR leader card (#1) ... Ruth, Aaron and Mays all on the same card. My first "pull". I was so thrilled when I got this at age 7 that I carried it in my pocket EVERYwhere. Today it's totally trashed but I keep it in my safe with the deed to the house, etc. but I've vowed to NEVER put it in card protection.
2-1976 Topps Johnny Bench. Simply the coolest card ever produced in the 70s, perhaps all time. It was the first card I "chased" all summer.
3-Authentic Nile Kinnick autograph. Kinnick (the namesake of the Iowa Hawkeyes' Kinnick Stadium) won the Heisman in 1939 and then was killed in a training exercise during WWII. It's the hardest "get" for Heisman auto collectors. My uncle was a caddy at a golf course in Des Moines in the early 40s and got it for his little brother (my dad) when Kinnick was golfing there. More than the monetary value of the card I love the story behind it and the value it has in my family.
Great list... that Kinnick auto & the story behind it is awesome. But the one I'd like to focus on is the 1973 All-time HR leader card. I think a bunch of collectors should get together and write a book. Each of us could include one cool story like the one you just shared. Simply awesome!

ReplyDeleteWow... that 3x5 Musial freebie is awesome. And thanks Simon for the kind words. Best of luck in the contest!
Delete1. Autographed 1982 Fleer Tim Wallach obtained by sending a SASE to Olympic Stadium in 1987.
ReplyDeletehttp://timwallach.blogspot.com/2012/08/1982-fleer-autograph.html
2. Autographed Wallach Jersey

3. 1977 Topps Andre Dawson
http://classonave.blogspot.com/2011/12/andre-dawson-1977-topps.html
Great list... I love the Wallach story. Thanks for sharing.
DeleteI'm in, under the deadline I think.
ReplyDeletePosted right here
I love the idea of creating a binder containing players you've owned on your fantasy football teams. Wait... let's go back. You've played FF for 32 years? You're the Curly Lambeau of FF.
DeleteThinking on the fly:
ReplyDelete1. The Derrek Lee autograph 8 X 10, referred to in an earlier post.
2. A X-Files CCG promo card of The Lone Gunmen, given away at a convention years ago, signed by 2 of the three actors who play The Lone Gunmen (the John Fitzgerald Byers actor was not there).
3. A movie poster from the 1986 Transformers movie. Oohs and ahhs come from anyone my age who happens to see it.
I'd definitely ooh and ah if I saw your 1986 Transformers movie poster. That's a piece of my childhood.
