Flea Market Finds #178: Three Decades of Baseball

Summer break is coming to a close.  I've already spent four days in my classroom getting it ready for the 2025-26 school year and it's pretty much ready to go.

This past Saturday was the De Anza Flea Market... and I'm not sure if they changed management... but it was booming with vendors.  This was by far the biggest turnout in years.  In addition to the usual people who set up, there were probably another 40 to 50 spaces filled... and some brought cards.

Let's check out this week's haul...

Purchase #180's Donruss Baseball  $10

1981 & 1984 Donruss Baseball

I came across a couple with furniture.  Sitting on a dining room table were six or seven boxes of baseball cards.  The lady came over to me and said each box was $20, so I started going through them.  All of them contained 1987 Donruss baseball... with this partially filled box of 1981 Donruss being the lone exception.

1981 Donruss Stars and Managers

I asked her if she would take $10, since it wasn't completely filled and she accepted.  1981 Donruss were some of the first packs of baseball cards I opened, but I didn't keep any of them from my childhood.

Over the years, I've added a few singles to my 80's binder.  This purchase added four more 9-pocket pages to the collection.

These two cards highlighted the purchase:

1981 Donruss #499
1981 Donruss #550

Both immediately take me back to 1981 when my friends and I would trade cards on our front porches.

The box also had some rookie cards from the 1984 Donruss set:

Plus an investors' lot of Joe Charboneau rookie cards.  🤣

Purchase #290's Magazines  $10

Another new vendor had a bunch of 80's and 90's toys.  He also had a bunch of cards, but they were mostly the overproduced early 90's stuff.  I had spent about ten minutes digging through his boxes when he asked if I'd be interested in baseball card magazines.

You know I was.  I ended up going through a box containing a bunch of issues of Sports Cards from the 90's.  Here's what I pulled out:

I targeted these, because they contained these uncut sheets:

Although $10 is a little more than I wanted to spend, it did help me land the next purchase for a bargain price.

Purchase #380's Action Figure of a Legend  $10

The guy with the magazines also had a box of Starting Lineups.  Sitting inside was this hidden gem:

1988 Kenner SLU #NNO

As much as I dislike the San Francisco 49ers, this is a figure I have wanted for decades.  Since I purchased those magazines, he told me I could have the figure for $10.

This probably will be the least popular purchase of the post among most of you, but this was easily my favorite.

Purchase #4A Bo Jackson Rookie Card  $5

1987 Topps Rack Pack

One vendor drove all the way from Fresno to set up.  He's not a regular, but I have seen and talked to him before.  He had a box of 1987 and 1988 Topps baseball rack packs for $3 each (or 2 for $5).  I started to see if there were any PC guys on the tops of these racks, but didn't find any.  Then the vendor pulled this pack from under the table.  He wanted a premium which I happily paid.

Purchase #5A Searched Vintage Vending Box  $25

When I first arrived at the flea market, I ran into a buddy who was standing next to a guy going through three 1978 vending boxes.  There was one of each sport and he had just purchased them for $25 each.

1978 Topps Baseball Vending Box

About an hour later... my buddy called and said the guy was interested in selling them.  He had already told me that the boxes had been picked through, but there were some stars left behind:

The guy wanted $30 per box or we could take all three for what he paid.  My friend wanted the basketball and I was only interested in the baseball.  After thinking about it for a few minutes, he grabbed the football too, so we were able to get the $25 deal.

Much like the 1981 Donruss purchase, this one helped fill the 1978 part of my 70's binder.  Since they're from a vending box, the corners are nice (for the most part), but the centering is really bad.  I might end up pulling out my 1978 set and upgrading some singles.  Not sure when I'll have the time to do that though.

I just received two more blogger care packages and a shipment from Sportlots.  I'd like to organize them and hammer out a few more posts before my summer break officially ends next Wednesday.  We'll see how things shake out.

Until then...

Happy Wednesday and sayonara!

By the way... if any of you are building the 1978 Topps or 1981 Donruss baseball sets, leave a comment down below and/or email me your lists.  I might be able to help you out.

I could use some 1978 Topps. I’m sure I have a ton of commons I need. My wantlist is on TCDB https://www.tcdb.com/CollectionBrowse.cfm/mem/Karensjer/col/Wantlist1/sid/80/1978-Topps

Hrabosky always reminds me of the other American in the Van Damme movie Kickboxer mixed with a little bit of Ogre from Nerds.

The magazines with the cards still intact, very nice....

I don't know why but I really like 84 Donruss.. I don't have much of it. I do have that Fernandez though..
Looks like a nice batch of pickups..

Those baseball card magazines were definitely a must have back in the day, miss them.

Good Job! ✌️

Looks like this trip was a win. I wasn't expecting to see 10 Joe Carter rookies come out of a box like that.

Well, good stuff, but my problem is I have too many cards, and none of that would do me any good except those magazine repli-cards things. I'd definitely buy those.

I'm not sure what the best find was, but I liked the magazines the most. Having said that, that SLU looks really mint or near mint, 10 bucks would be hard to pass up for that. I think you made out quite well.

Love the Montana! I have a few SLU’s up in my office. I think they are cool. The Sports Cards magazine with Karros on the front was one I had back in the day. My mom threw it away when I moved out. Those Joe Carter rookies are a great find! I’m jealous you own 10!

Lots of great pickups here but that Montana SLU was a fantastic find!

Seeing the Montana with the little helmet reminded me I had a football SLU when I was a kid. Mark Bavaro - I had forgetten about that figure for decades!

I love early 80s Donruss. Seeing all that 80s greatness reminds me of how much fun collecting was back then. All the cool magazines and stuff. Just a different time.

To entertain myself while tagging on supermarket shopping trips, I would be in the magazine / newsstand aisle and read up on those magazines when available. I used to cut up the cards when I would end up with one or more copies, but always felt like the cards ended up too hacked up to be considered real cards.

Oh nice. I would have swooped up the magazine and all the 1987 rack packs I could carry! Awesome haul! Enjoy the last few days of summer vacation!

Good deals. I continue to be jealous / impressed.

The Phillies had Schmidt, Carlton, and Rose at the same time? I wonder if they made the playoffs in 1980.

the angels in order - thanks. i was excited there were some pc guys on those sheets like gwynn, maddux, bonds, jordan, and mcgwire

matt - if you like rack packs, i have one more that i picked up at a card show a few weeks ago. should have that post up next week

jeremya1um - i'll definitely be able to help, but after searching a few minutes... i discovered that it'll be much easier for me to put these cards in numerical order. the way tcdb is set up i have to keep clicking between pages to see if you need the cards. do you know if there's a way to export your wantlist from their database?

adame - not sure about the van damme guy, but he definitely resembles ogre from nerds.

johnnys trading spot - plus i started reading the actually magazines. there's some interesting stuff in there

mike matson - i was fortunate enough to have access to 84 donruss when i was a kid. it was 84 fleer i had trouble finding

john sharp - it's kinda sad that there aren't modern versions of that magazine. there's a lot of interesting content and ads in each of those issues

cardboredom - lol. me either. he has a card in one of the magazines and on the back it says it books for $45. i would have been rich in 1993 :D

night owl - i have the same problem (having too many cards). on top of that, i have the problem of ignoring the first problem and spending more money on more cards

jupiterhill - the montana does have some flaws, but it's overall in really nice shape... especially when you consider it's from the original release (before there were protective cases being produced for those slus).

bryan - i have some slu's hanging up in my classroom (plus a few opened ones on a shelf in my room). i'll be showing them off in a future (back to school) post. btw if you need a card, email me your mailing address and i'll send one your way

chris - thanks. i love slus, but i especially love the 88 and 89's.

bo - nice. if i see his figure, i'll keep you in mind. hope you at least kept the card.

big tone - totally agree. any cards from the early 80's takes me back to my collecting roots.

laurens - decades later, i'm still trying to figure out an efficient way to cut up those magazine sheets. the fiskars paper cutter doesn't work as well as i had hoped.

sumomenkoman - if the guy is out there next month, i'll grab some packs for you.

elliptical man - that team was loaded. in addition to those three studs, they also had mcgraw, trillo, luzinski, maddox, mcbride, bowa, and lonnie smith.

I’m sure there is a way but I haven’t had to use it. If it’s too much trouble to go through it, that’s cool.

Man, so much goodness in this haul. That vending box might be my favorite. I like the Joe Montana SLU as well, but the figure looks nothing like Mr. Montana heheh.

Great stuff! I've come to enjoy finding those magazines with uncut sheets in them too, and I'm glad they're still common enough for you to be able to find them. The other stuff is also great like the Bo rack pack. Hooray for another great FMF!
