Taking A Break

It's officially allergy season here in my neck of the woods... and that means scratchy throats, itchy eyes, constant sneezing, and a constant dull headache due to sinus congestion.  I've lived with allergies my entire life and can handle almost everything on this list.  But the one thing that's been kicking my butt is the dull headache, which has been affecting my sleep schedule.

The last week or so, I've been waking up a lot in the middle of the night... and having difficulty falling back asleep.  As a result, I've been coming home and taking naps during time usually reserved for writing.

I have several half written posts waiting to be finished, but I haven't been in the mood to write the past four days.  On the other hand, I don't want this blog to go silent for too long.

So today's post covers a three pack break I ripped last night before crawling into bed.  All three packs were part of a prize package I won from Stadium Fantasium back in January.

2019 Topps 1984 Box Topper #84BT-36

The first pack I opened was a 2019 Topps box topper pack that revealed the Goldschmidt you see above.

I like Goldy... but I'll probably pass this card along to Brady over at St. Louis Cardinals' Cardboard the next time I run into him at the card show we both attend.

The next pack was 2019 Finest baseball.  I was pretty excited about the opportunity to pull a new Fernando Tatis Jr. rookie card for my collection.  Let's see if I did:

The first two cards in the pack were the Chapman and Trout.  Neither are Tatis... but at least one of the guys is a player I collect and the other is the best player in baseball.  The other two cards were the last two cards in the pack.

And sandwiched in between was this card:

2019 Finest Autographs #FA-JB

Again.  Not Tatis.  Not even close... but I'm not going to complain about pulling an autograph from a pack.

The last pack I ripped last night was a 1989 Pacific Baseball Legends (2nd Series).  This product features a bunch of fan favorites and hall of famers who played before I started watching baseball, so I was pretty excited to win this pack in the contest.

Here's what I pulled:

I can't remember the last time I pulled an Earl Weaver out of a pack of cardsMaybe 1986 Topps He definitely looked much older than on this card. I also enjoyed the (possibly posed) action shots of Score, Pierce, and Ennis.  But the highlight was this Vida:

1989 Pacific Baseball Legends

Vida last pitched for the A's when I was barely three years old, so I don't have any memories of his days in Oakland.  But you didn't have to watch him to know that he's a Bay Area legend and I'm always happy to add a new single of his to my collection.

Well... that's a wrap.  Sorry about the unannounced break.  I hope to be back on schedule by this weekend.

Happy Thursday and sayonara!

  1. Feel better, Fuji, and thanks for the amazing trade package! You really went all out with what you sent people this time, I'm impressed. Also, the Finest cards look nice but Pacific Legends stuff is awesome.

  2. Never had to deal with allergies in my life......that is until ten years ago, and now it's year round. But, oh well it is what it is. The post nasal drip gets me the worst. As for getting up in the middle of the night (get used to it.....you're getting older, hehehe). Feel better my friend.

  3. I really hope you feel better soon, Mark. Take it easy in the meantime. I'm glad those packs yielded some pretty decent cards. Any idea what the odds were of pulling that auto?

  4. Vida looks so young. I only remember him from early 80's Topps near the end of his career, which ended before I was really into baseball.

  5. You know you're a legend when your "Taking a break" post still includes three packs, shiny, an autograph, and Earl Weaver.

    Feel better soon, Fuji!

  8. There are some great names in that Pacific set. Not the best design or anything, but I have seen boxes of that product on the cheap at card shows, and have long thought about busting open a box. I also love the Bauers card. He has not hit yet in the Majors, but he was in Durham for two years and was an OBP guy. Hoping he can pick it up this coming season.

  11. I'd forgotten all about Pacific Legends until reading baseball card blogs, and now I smile whenever I see them. It's one of the few late-'80s sets I haven't seen a million times, and now that I know more about the legends depicted I can appreciate more than I did as a kid. Also, that was a great finest pack!

Hope you get some rest, feel better, and come back to the blogs when you can.

  17. dennis - thanks. i think the target brand zyrtec is starting to help.

zippy zappy - ありがとうございました (i hope google translate is accurate)

johnnys trading spot - oh man... the post nasal drip sucks. my throat hurts the first 2 to 3 hours of the day. but the headache is by far the thing i hate the most. as for getting up in the middle of the night, i've already been hearing stories about that. my dad says he sometimes wakes up at 2:30 in the morning. that's insane!

bbcardz - thanks again for the contest and the prizes. according to cardboard connection, there were 2 autographs per box and 12 pack per box... so 1 autograph per 6 packs.

base card hero - i pretty much only remember him from the early 80's as well (when he was pitching for the giants)

adam kaninger - a legend? that's quite the compliment. i'm feeling a little better. it's been cool enough the past two days where i've been able to sleep with the window closed, so i think that along with the generic zyrtec have helped

the lost collector - thanks. i was pretty excited to pull an autograph. maybe he'll have a breakout season

    sumomenkoman - thanks buddy!

the snorting bull - i'd love to bust open a box of Pacific Legends too. If I stumbled across a box for $5 to $7, i'd probably grab it. and thanks for the info on bauers. i'll keep my fingers crossed.

robert - lol. i couldn't stay away too long. already have some posts lined up for this week

big tone - thanks. i took some time to rest this weekend and sat down and wrote two posts this evening for the upcoming week

chris - i feel like i'd love to build (or maybe buy) the entire pacific legends series, throw them in a binder, sit down, and read all of the card backs at some point in my life.

matt - thanks. and yes, they do!

friend11 - the sooner, the better. although i was just talking to some people about our area needing more rain.

nick - the wrapper is pretty cool. it's made out of wax paper like the good old days ;)

peter k steinberg - thanks. i'm starting to feel better, but they're still lingering.

sport card collectors - i'm glad i don't have them year round. if i did, i'd probably see a doctor to get the good stuff.
