Cheap Cool Cards #30: 2007 Ace Novak Djokovic Shirt Card

I can't remember the last time I watched a complete tennis match.  Actually, there a good chance I've never watched a full match.  I own a tennis racket and played a few games in my time, but when it comes to watching others play, it's just not my thing.

But here's the thing.  I'm a collector.  So when I see a cool piece of cardboard and it's cheap, there's a good chance I'll buy it... even if I don't follow the sport.

Here's a 2007 Ace Authentic "Materials" card of Novak Djokovic that I picked up earlier this year for $1 (free shipping).

Djokovic has had his ups and downs in 2012, but last year he dominated the ATP Tour winning three of the four Grand Slam Singles Titles (Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open).

On Monday, he faced Olympic Champion Andy Murray at the 2012 U.S. Open, but lost in 5 sets in what ESPN described as a battle of epic proportions.  Hopefully he'll bounce back and eventually regain his status as the #1 ranked player in tennis.

Okay... here's your question of the day:

Outside of baseball, basketball, football, and hockey... do you collect cards from any other sports?

Happy Wednesday and sayonara!

  1. Not actively. I do get a few in trade packages now and then, but I don't pursue other sports. There are too many baseball cards to keep up with as it is!

    1. I completely understand. Sometimes I wonder what my collection would look like if I didn't waste my money on random cards that don't really fit my collection.

  2. I have 2 Tennis Sets and the old Pro Set golf set. Back in the late 1970s I had some soccer cards from England. I wish I them now.

    1. I love those Pro Set sets from the early 90's. They had simple designs with good information. Too bad they were so overproduced.

  3. I casually collect vintage boxing cards. I have a few from the cigarette issues and the Topps '51 Ringside series. But I don't really seek them out nor am I trying to complete a set.

    1. I'd never heard of the 51 Topps Ringside set... but now I have my sights set on a Jake LaMotta. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I recently busted two cases of 2007 Ace Authentic Straight Sets tennis. I guess you could say I collect tennis, but only if it is cheap.

    1. Did you pull any Michael Chang autos or relics? Any other cool hits?

  5. I used to collect auto racing cards until NASCAR pissed me off for the last time. I have a very small soccer collection (including some from the UK). One of these days I'll get around to sharing the highlights of both collections.

    1. Looking forward to seeing those. I've always loved obscure cards.

    1. No judging here... I just bought a 1987 Topps WWF set, because it had a couple cards of Ricky The Dragon Steamboat.

  8. I'd like to collect tennis. There's not a lot of it around and I guess I'm not enthused enough to search it out.

But I've watched plenty of tennis. It's my second-favorite sport.

    1. You'd rather watch tennis over football? Are you crazy?

    1. I don't know a lot of soccer names... but George Best definitely stands out.

  10. In a lot of ways, I prefer non-big 4 sports cards. I actively collect wrestling cards, passively collect tobacco soccer cards (like my Willis footballer set from the 30's featuring Blackpool legend Sir Stanley Matthews and the full collectable album), completed one set of tobacco flag cards and make fits and starts on a T29 Hassan Animals set. I still collect baseball and hockey cards, but beyond the stray pack, never seek out football or basketball.

    1. If my bank account could handle it, I'd love to one day build a tobacco set. That flag set sounds really cool. So does the animals set.
