I Love Sorting Cards!

I'm one of those people who love to organize and sort things... which explains why I collect trading cards. When I was a kid, I'd plop myself in front of the television with a stack of cards and sort them into teams. A week later, I'd do the same thing... only this time I'd put them in numerical order. The next week? I'd sort them by players. My collection was constantly being manhandled and rearranged.

These days, I don't handle my cards as much as I used to. But every now and then, I still have the urge to sort & organize.

I recently traded my buddy a bunch of unopened wax boxes (3 boxes of 90/91 Pro Set Hockey, 3 boxes of 1991 Kayo Boxing, and 1 box of 90/91 Score Hockey), some 49ers team sets, and $10 for this box of singles:

The box provided me with over ninety minutes worth of entertainment as I sat in front of the television sorting the cards and deciding which cards I wanted to keep and which ones I was going to give away, sell, or trade..

When I was finished, there were little stacks of cardboard scattered across my family room and one small stack of around 30 cards that I planned on adding to my collection.

Here's a sample of what I pulled for myself...

Vintage Cards

  1. Mt favourite 90's insert is the Rewind 99, which was 40 cards based on basketball... BTW, have you seen my Pure Adrenalyn Post?

  5. My favorite vintage card probably would be the 1971 Joe Hague card. Why? Because it's pretty much my only vintage card I have. I got it from my good friend Will in a trade.

    1. I've never heard of Mr. Hague... but that's pretty cool that it's a gift from a good friend.

  7. My favorite is the Griffey You Crash the Game insert that I won when he hit a homer on the day mentioned on the redemption card. Mailed it in with a few bucks, waited 6-8 weeks, and OHMIGOODNESS it was awesome when it came in the mail. Looks like this - http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0acUbzoZS6o/Sz-3plXm6PI/AAAAAAAABpk/9Ml_Id4Ribc/s320/DSC06772.JPG

Second favorite might be the insert card of Griffey's that came with Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for the SNES. That one looks like this - http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_0acUbzoZS6o/Sz-3koGqeYI/AAAAAAAABpc/jUVPb26yQWk/s320/DSC06778.JPG

Needless to say I was a huge Griffey fan as a kid.

  8. My favorite vintage card is probably my 1976 Topps Jim Rice. I traded a 1984 Topps Darryl Strawberry for it in 1986. I did't know who the Strawberry guy was, but I knew I was getting an old Red Sox card. It had that old Topps rookie cup on it. Rice is in an old uniform. I didn't even care about the pinhole at the top. I had to have it. Of course, I then watched the value of the Strawberry go sky high and felt pretty foolish. Then the Strawberry crashed down, and I felt pretty smart. That's why you need to collect what you like. I was happy in the end.

    1. I'd make the trade for the Jim Rice all day long. I loved Rice growing up and the 1976 card is a beauty.

  9. My favorite vinatge is my 1963 Ray Nitschke rookie. My favorite 90's insert is one I pulled not too long ago. Bought a couple of 92 Donruss wax boxes for 5 bucks a piece and ended up pulling a Will Clark Elite numbered to 10,000.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wow... I won't be able to afford the Nitschke RC, but I understand why that's your favorite. Actually I'd love to add the rookie card of any Packers legend to my collection.

As for the Clark... that's awesome that you beat the odds and pulled a Elite insert. Congratulations.

  10. Favorite vintage card -- favorite card of all-time -- is 1975 Topps Ron Cey. I've written about it over and over again, so I'll find like 10 links when I get a chance.

  15. My favorite vintage card is a 1967 Mantle - because I actually own it.

Hmmm, favorite insert from the 90's is tough. I'd have to go with the 1996 Ultra Season Crowns insert set.

    1. I definitely need to make it one of my goals to add a vintage Mantle to my collection...

As for the Ultra Season Crowns... can't argue with an acetate set from the 90's.

  19. My favorite vintage card is definitely my 1969 Roger Maris. I got it just last March at a card shop when I went back to New York for the first time in 5 years. It was my first card from the 60's, my first vintage Yankees card and Maris is one of my favorite players of all time (gotta love the immortal legends who aren't enshrined in Cooperstown).

    1. I tried to find the 1969 Maris card, but only came across the World Series subset card. I'm a huge fan of those immortal legends who fall short of the HOF as well.

  20. Favorite vintage is a easy call, and very simple to remember how I got it. In my first trade with the Troll, he dropped a 52 Bowman Billy Pierce on me. Said I was now entrusted to take care of him. It's an amazing card from a pretty decent dude.

90's insert. Hmmmm - I can't really say if I had one. While technically not an insert set (I think), I always liked that Pro Set hockey did ref and linesmen cards one year. Those are kinda inserty, aren't they?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Love cards that have collector ties to them. I definitely see why the Pierce is special to you.

As for those early Pro Set cards... I'm a huge fan of the designs and the fact that they added refs are nice bonuses.

Hmm, no 90's inserts come to mind, so I'll go with vintage...it's the 1960 Topps Bob Gibson I have coming to me from last year's Topps Diamond Giveaway (at least I hope it's coming...it says it's backordered...wha?). I'll go with that for the pure shock value. I was not expecting to wind up with a vintage card of anyone important, and when I entered the code and looked up I had to do a double take...what the heck is Bob Gibson looking at me all angry-like...you mean I actually got this card?!??!?!?!?
