This hobby is one of the things that brings a smile to my face, because it unites two of my passions in life: collecting memorabilia & sports. But every now and then, it also serves as a reminder of melancholy moments from my past.
On April 9th, 2009... exactly three years ago... Nick Adenhart passed away after suffering injuries from a hit and run car accident. I remember reading about his death on the internet that morning and being completely blown away and saddened. He had just pitched 6 shutout innings for the Angels the night before against my beloved Oakland Athletics. And now he was gone at the age of 22.
I didn't watch that game, and I had never heard of Adenhart before the accident. But his passing has since made an impact on my life.
It helps me appreciate just how precious our lives truly are... because we never know when our name is going to be called. It also reminds me to be grateful of our family, friends, and loved ones... because they too can be taken away from us without any given notice.
Rest in peace, Mr. Adenhart. Your baseball card has a permanent home in my office, where it serves it's very specific purpose.
Happy Monday everyone... and sayonara!
Very nice post.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked when I read the news as well. Very unfortunate. You're right, you never know when you're time is up.
I've since picked up his RC auto and a g/u jersey from his Futures Game. 2 cards that I'll never move.
Thanks! Didn't realize he had a memorabilia card. Maybe I'll try to build a trifecta of him.
Delete2006 Bowman Draft Futures Game Relic. Picked mine up on COMC.
DeleteHe also has an '06-'07 Bound for Beijing USA relic.
Thanks, I found both on COMC... I just put in an offer on the 2006 Bowman Draft Futures Game Relic. We'll see if he/she takes it.
