I love the 80's #3 - John Hughes Movies

While walking around the flea market yesterday, I came across a guy selling some of his DVDs and VHS tapes. I picked up a few DVDs for my classroom collection, but was actually more intrigued by his VHS collection. Most of his tapes were movies I enjoyed as a kid growing up in the 80's. As I looked through his titles and came across certain movies, I thought about my childhood. Who did I see this movie with? Where did I watch this movie? Why did I like it so much? How certain scenes related to my life? What was my favorite scene?

He had a bunch 80's movies: Red Dawn, Back to the Future, A Christmas Story, and of course all of the major John Hughes films.

I can't imagine any teenager growing up in the 80's not loving John Hughes' movies. Everything from his style of humor, the connection with our generation, and the selection of his cast made his movies special. Like the Star Wars Trilogy, his movies were in a league of their own.

So here are a list of all of my John Hughes films that I own on VHS in chronological order, along with the first thing that popped into my head when I looked at the title.

Vacation (1983): Christie Brinkley & the pool

Sixteen Candles (1984): Long Duck Dong saying "Oh Sexy Girlfriend"

The Breakfast Club (1985) : "Two hits... me hitting you... you hitting the floor"

European Vacation (1985): Clark dancing at the German festival

Weird Science (1985): Chet

Pretty in Pink (1986): OMD & Duckie

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986): Wrigley Field

Christmas Vacation (1989): Cousin Eddie emptying the sh!tter

Unfortunately, a little over a year ago John Hughes passed away. However his impact on pop culture will keep him fresh in the memories of those who continue to watch his classics.

So today's question of the day is: What is your favorite John Hughes film? If by chance you've never seen any of his movies, then I'll let you put down your favorite 80's film.

However, there's a bonus question. What do you think is my favorite 80's John Hughes movie? If you guess it correctly, I'll give you an additional 2 points.

Here are the current point standings:

Last, but not least...today's officially the last day of my summer for me. Although my students won't show up to class until Wednesday, I have staff development days tomorrow and Tuesday. Fun, fun, fun. So this is just a little heads up. Up until now, most of these contest posts took place in the morning (PST) and ended in the evening. I'm not sure how my "work" schedule will impact my "contest" schedule, but I'm sure it will. My guess is that I'll be posting the "Question of the Day" in the afternoon and closing them when I wake up in the morning. Hopefully this doesn't affect too many of you. I really do appreciate all of the participation.

Have a great Sunday!

  1. I've seen them all, only have Ferris Bueller on DVD, and every time I type that I go with Buehrle for the White Sox pitcher.

That'd be my fave John Hughes movie, I like the seen in Wrigley Field, "Hey Batter, Batter!". And the dram academy cover off the Smith's "Please, Please, Please, Let me get what I want!"

Of course John Hughes films are mentioned alot in Kevin Smith's movies.

I'm going to say that Ferris Bueller's movie is your fave movie.

  2. I'm going to say The Breakfast Club is your favorite Hughes movie.

As for me, that's a hard one - Breakfast Club was a long time favorite, but Ferris is so damn good! And I just saw Uncle Buck for the first time, which is pretty hilarious (John Candy is excellent). Plus Hughes produced the original Home Alone, which is similarly excellent.

That said, I'd say The Breakfast Club is still my favorite. So many great lines, so many awesome moments...just a tremendous movie. I always sort of associated with Anthony Michael Hall, though I always wanted to be either Judd Nelson or Ally Sheedy. They were way too cool.

  3. This is the hardest question yet! How can I pick only one? I always think of the teacher from the breakfast club 'you mess with the bull, you get the horns!'. Best part of the movie, that and when Emilio estevez gets stoned and goes on a crazy dance, with the weird fist pumps and cartwheels, like yeah sure, you can do a cartwheel when your stoned!
But thats not my favorite movie of Hughes. Maybe Christmas Vacation and when they go sledding or Ferris with the Star Wars scene with the ferrari. This is tough!
I'm going to go with Christmas Vacation.
I think your favourite is Vacation.

  4. I like all of them, but Ferris Bueller is my favorite. I love the Ferrari and also the "twist and shout" scene.

I think your favorite is also Ferris Bueller's day off" Maybe your students have gone to such lengths to get out of class for a day.

  5. Bueller is definitely my favorite, by far. Breakfast Club comes in a distant second.

I'll say your favorite is Bueller, too. It's just too great of a movie.

  6. It's very close for me, but the one thing that tipped the scales in my case is the soundtrack. I'm picking The Breakfast Club for that reason. I have a whole 80s playlist on my iPod and the Breakfast Club soundtrack (at least most of it) is on that list.

As far as which movie is YOUR favorite, I'm going to go with Faris Bueller's Day Off because of the connection with school (you being a teacher and all) and with the connection to baseball (a la Wrigley Field).

Tell me I'm right! Come on...you know your favorite John Hughes movie is Farris Bueller! :)

  7. "Buck Melanoma. Moley Russell's wart"

Uncle Buck is probably my favorite Hughes movie and it was John Candy's best role. Christmas Vacation isn't far behind, though. Randy Quaid had a quotable line in everey scene.

    "Merry Christmas. Shitter was full"

I going to say that Uncle Buck is your favorite, too.

  8. My favorite is Weird Science. I will guess that is your too.

  9. I'll go with Breakfast Club for me, Ferris Bueller for you

  10. My favorite? Ferris Bueller, despite the overt flaunting of a Red Wings jersey throughout the film.

Your favorite? Also Ferris Bueller. At least that's my guess.

  11. I've seen them all multiple times, maybe that makes me a dork, but my fav is Christmas Vacation.

I'm going to say your fav is The Breakfast Club.

  13. I loved Weird Science. That was my first crush. Kelly Lebrock. Holy Canoli. For reals.

Since you are also a Sci-Fi nerd like myself - and the Force is strong in us both - I'll say Weird Science is your fave also.

  14. I love Christmas Vacation...my buddies and I used to watch it all the time. However, my favorite is Ferris Bueller and I think it's your favorite too.

  15. I can't believe I never purchased Uncle Buck... looks like that'll be my next flea market purchase.

Next post will be up this afternoon... along with the updated point total. Stay tuned to find out which JH movie was my favorite!
