A 70's Set Build & an 80's Project

The Sunday Sort took place.  Set building and scanning did too, however I wasn't able to hammer out a post.  Until now.

This week's sort involved three care packages revolving around a 70's set build and an 80's project.  Let's start with my Topps Glossy All-Stars collection build.

Collectors who bought Topps rack packs from 1984 to 1991 were treated with a bonus white bordered, glossy card featuring all-star players, managers, and honorary members, captains, or team photos.  These are commonly referred to as Topps Glossy All-Stars and each year the set was exactly twenty-two cards.

A few years ago, I decided to build or buy the entire eight year run of sets and house them in one binder titled "The Topps Glossy All-Star Collection".

Tom over at Batting Out of Order sent me half of the 1984 set:

1984 Topps Glossy All-Stars

These eleven cards have me four cards away from completing the 1984 set:

As for the entire Topps Glossy All-Star project, I'm still forty-two cards away.

John over at Johnny's Trading Spot sent me three of the Schmidt Glossy All-Stars:

I actually already had all three of these sitting in my binder, but this is a great way to see that Topps used the same design for the run of these sets.

John hit a home run with one of my other projects though.  He sent me ten cards for my 1977 Topps Star Wars set build:

While I hope to complete the Glossy All-Star project by the end of the summer, I'm in it for the long haul with this set build.

I'm not in a rush with this set, because I already own a complete set that I purchased years ago.  This particular set build was inspired by this flea market find and will be a source of entertainment for years to come.

Steve at 1975baseballcards.com also sent me some cards for my set build:

Like the blue and red series, the yellow is also slowly coming along:

While the
green and orange series are nearly complete.

Steve included a few other cards for my collection.  One of them was this Red Schoendienst error card that actually depicts Whitey Herzog:

2024 Topps Heritage #149

Getting back to those Topps Glossy All-Stars, Herzog has the honor of having the most appearances (3) among managers.  In fact, the only other manager with multiple appearances is Tony LaRussa with two.

Thank you Tom, John, and Steve for you help and support with these set builds and projects.

Happy Monday and sayonara!

Extra Innings

I'm assuming most of you who write on the Blogger platform are experiencing delays on getting their posts added to blogger feedsHas anyone found a solution to this?  Last week, one of my posts didn't pop up on my feed until over 24 hours later.  I've also noticed that there are major delays with fellow blogger's publications on my reading list.  I try and go back at least one or two days each morning to see if I missed anyone's posts, but I'm sure a few have slipped through the cracks.  Hopefully Blogger fixes this issue sooner than later.  Until then, if you have any personal tricks, please let me and others know down below in the comments.

  2. Great All-Star cards and I love that Obi Wan Kemobi card. Good Job! 👍

  3. Blogger (google) did address the delay issue and will NOT be fixing it. The updating of the "program" takes a back seat to anything and everything AI. The system updates after all others have been updated (which is all throughout the day and night). Sucks, and you never know if a post will actually show up instantly or hours, or even a day or so later (of course you can go directly to the specific "bloggers site" to see it live).

  4. I enjoy seeing the older cards of the players I liked growing up. Jim Rice was one of my Favorite players and I remember all of those cards. Happy Monday!!!

  5. Blogger has definitely hidden some posts; I've seen them linked on blogs I follow but not on the blogroll. Very strange.

Any chance you need some 1986 Topps Glossy All-Stars?

  6. I've thought about completing the glossy All-Star sets, but if I do anything like that, I think I'll take on the '80s glossy send-in sets instead. ... That red-bordered Tuscan Raider card was the only Star Wars card that remained in my collection for a long time. Sure wish I didn't get rid of all those.

The only thing that has worked for me with the delayed posts is the tip I got from Diamond King, by going to the feedburner site (feedburner.google.com) and hitting "refresh". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. ... Though the last few days, my posts have been publishing instantly.

  7. Very cool that you're chasing the run of those All-Star cards, and not too far off either! The Star Wars cards are also fantastic. It's always nice getting set wants from folks like Tom and John!

  8. I really enjoy the Topps all-star sets and am making a half-hearted attempt to collect more. That Schoendienst / Herzog card is crazy.

  10. gca - thanks greg. i found some washington cards for your collection yesterday (or maybe it was monday). i know i had a priest holmes relic set aside for you, but i'm struggling to find that. i will though

john sharp - that obi-wan card is my favorite from the bunch... with the tusken raider a close second.

batting out of order - thanks again tom for helping me out with my 1984 topps glossy all-star set build.

johnnys trading spot - that sucks. darn ai :D. it's really throwing a wrench into my blog post reading.

rr - i wish i would have bought more rack packs and appreciated the glossy all-stars more as a kid. unfortunately, i usually bought wax packs... and it wasn't until the 2nd half of my collecting journey that i started having an appreciation for these sets. not complaining though. it gives me an affordable project to work on.

bo - thank you kind sir!

chris - it's really weird. there are a few blogs that their posts don't pop up until several days. unfortunately, i only have 30 to 60 minutes each morning to scroll through my reading list and comment on posts. this often prevents me from reading posts that were originally published three or more days earlier unless i happen to click on their blog and see that they wrote a post

as for 1986 topps glossy all-star needs, i can use: #5 ripken and #13 garvey

night owl - the 80's glossy send-in sets will be the next project after the glossy all-stars. glad your recent posts are publishing instantly. i'll try out the feedburner trick the next time i publish a post. thanks in advance.

jeff b - yeah... the whole blogger thing is a mess. in addition to not being able to see recent blog posts or people being able to see mine... bots keep artificially driving up my view count. #veryfrustrated

matt - i'm in the process of sending out a bunch of 1977 topps star wars cards to john. maybe he'll be able to help out you and night owl with your set builds.

  11. (1) I always enjoy seeing the set builds that other collectors are working on. I don't have any Glossy All-Stars or Star Wars cards on your want lists, but I'll keep my eyes peeled!
    (2) I did some research on the blogger delay issues. Here's a thread with some discussion about it: https://support.google.com/blogger/thread/430107294

  12. My TCDB inventory says I have the 1985 Topps glossy #2 Garvey and #8 Strawberry, which were needs of yours according to your May 2026 post about the build. If you haven't tracked those down let me know and I'll double check for them.
