Back in 2018, Adrian Beltre passed Rod Carew to become the all-time leader in hits among Latin American born players. Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera have since passed him, but that's not really the point to this post.
2018 Topps Now #40
I just happened to be at the game with my buddy Mike when it happened. Sadly he passed away two years ago on his 51st birthday, but there's a special place in my collection that honors him and our friendship.
It's a reminder of that special day at the Oakland Coliseum:
Happy birthday Mike! Miss you buddy.
Everyone else...
Happy Saturday and sayonara!

Nice tribute to you friend. May the memories last forever.
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite thing about Topps Now cards - they can be personal and meaningful beyond the subject matter. Glad you are able to remember this friendship this way.
ReplyDeleteSorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Mike!
ReplyDeleteLike girl said, I agree it's cool to buy Topps Now cards that connect to a memory. I remember taking my kids to a game and we had a great time, and Brett Gardner had a walk-off hit that was made into a card. I bought copies for each of them.
johnnys trading spot - thanks john. if the memories don't last, at least i have these blog posts to help me remember
ReplyDeletegcrl - i totally agree. whenever i attend a game, i try and add a card to my collection. unfortunately it doesn't happen a lot
adame - thanks. mike had a positive impact on a lot of collectors' collections in our area. he was a long time dealer and kinda like a celebrity at local card shows and flea markets
the lost collector - that's my favorite thing about topps now. kudos to topps for making cards that end up being priceless treasures for our collections
Sorry about losing your friend at such a young age, looks like that game was a good memory though.
