One week left. This time next week, I'll be on summer break. It's not technically a break... since I'm sharing a summer school contract... but the stress of the regular school year is behind me and it's time to focus on me, things around the house, and of course... cards.
But I still have one week left. Until then, I wanted to share a quick song inspired post.
On my way into work this morning, I was flipping through radio stations and this song was on. Not sure how many of you appreciate country music, so I'll just get to the point. The song is called "Buy Dirt" and it immediately made me think of a purchase I made back in December:
This 2 ounce jar is filled with Oakland Coliseum dirt from the final A's game back on September 26th, 2024. I bought it from an online store called Last Dive Bar which celebrates baseball and memories at the Coliseum.
According to the original ad, one of the owners collected a bunch of the dirt which he shared with their customers for (cough, cough) nominal price.

2019 Topps #126
Fifty bucks sounds like a ridiculous amount of money for a small amount of dirt that may or may not be from the last A's game at the Coliseum. However most of you know how memorable this game was to me as an A's fan who grew up attending games there.

So when this item became available back in December during my prep period... I immediately added it to my cart and checked out. I'm glad that I did, because they quickly sold out within a few hours.
The Last Dive Bar still sells these jars and Coliseum dirt, but they've updated the product description. I'm glad they did, otherwise I'd be way more skeptical about the authenticity of the dirt.
I know this isn't exactly what Jordan Davis and Luke Bryan meant when they sang "Buy Dirt", but I appreciate the reminder to finally write about this purchase.
Happy Friday and sayonara!
As a Texan, I appreciate country music, and that particular song. The dirt you bought is so cool! I'm glad you were able to find it.
ReplyDeleteSo the phrase "dirt cheap" is a lie then.
ReplyDeleteCOOL DEAL! Yes, I know that song well. And in case Kenny looks back in, there's another country song about "dirt cheap".
ReplyDeleteMy kids bought me infield dirt from Fenway a long time ago. But it was a tiny tiny amount, only a plastic coin holder half filled with dirt.
ReplyDeleteI like country music but I can't stand his voice. He sounds like he has a permanent stuffed up nose. Easily one of my least favorite country singers.
That's cool! There are so many different things and ways to collect in our hobby. Nice.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of it. Haven't listened to a country song in probably 15 years. ... I'd almost have to be at the stadium when they were handing the dirt out to buy any.
ReplyDeleteI have a film canister filled with dirt from the dodger stadium infield. I secured it when I was on the field for an Eric Clapton/Elton John concert circa 1993.
ReplyDeleteI have sand from Omaha Beach that a friend brought me a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteWe have some dirt from the Field of Dreams in Iowa. My oldest was in a baseball tournament there and got to do the home run derby on the field. It was his idea to put some in a bag and it still sits on his shelf!
ReplyDeleteIf I were an A's fan I'd've been all over those dirt jars. Some of my biggest regrets have been not picking up souvenir dirt from other places I've been. It seems weird but there's also something very primal about it. And yeah I'd love to have a similar jar of dirt from Candlestick.
ReplyDeleteThis is neat. I have a pen with some Yankee Stadium dirt. But this look a lot nicer to display.
ReplyDeleteThat's a very cool keepsake, even if it benefits some awful owners. I have some Comerica Park mound dirt myself :)
ReplyDeleteThat ain't dirt cheap, but that's your stadium so I can't say I wouldn't do that if I were you!
ReplyDeleteginko-5 - thanks. solid song with some solid advice.
ReplyDeletezippy zappy - yup. most expensive dirt i've ever purchased :D
johnnys trading spot - not cheap, but no way i could pass up the purchase on something so sentimental to my a's collection
adame - years ago i reached out to mlb teams (for a team building activity in school) and the red sox sent me some fenway dirt. thought that was pretty cool.
karsal - yup. some of buy dirt. others chuckle at those who buy dirt :D
night owl - i wish i could have gone on the field myself and grabbed a handful of my own (if that's even allowed). but we didn't really have field access where we were seated that day
gcrl - that is awesome! very cool piece of dodger stadium and music history
rod (padrographs) - oh man. that is really, really cool.
uncle charlie's shoebox - that's so cool (both the dirt and the fact that he got to be a part of a home run derby). back in 2013 leaf produced some corn stalk relic cards from the field of dreams. i picked up a bench for my collection.
nick vossbrink - i'd love to have some infield dirt from candlestick to go right next to the coliseum dirt. i'd gladly fork over another $50 :D
the lost collector - i remember seeing one of those pens (maybe on steiner sports website). very cool collectible for any baseball fan... but especially yankees fans
dennis - that's really cool. did you get to visit the field yourself? have you ever written about it?
jafronius - yeah... i'm a sucker for oakland coliseum memorabilia. i'm hoping to one day purchase a seat back or even a full stadium seat when they decide to tear it down.
