Three months ago... I won the Banana Ball Ticket Lottery and purchased tickets for my friend and her mom. A few weeks ago, the plans changed and I was going in her mom's place.
Part of me was excited, because I have wanted to go to a Savannah Bananas game since I heard about them two years ago. On the other hand, as I have mentioned in previous posts... things are a little hectic with end-of-the-year activities... so I was feeling a little anxious. But if the title wasn't a hint... it ended up being a really awesome experience.
I was going to document the entire trip in this post, but after realizing most people don't care about where we shopped and what we snacked on during the drive... 50% of the original post ended up on the cutting room floor.
Let's get to the interesting stuff (well the stuff I find interesting)...
We arrived at Angels Stadium... about five hours before the game. Temperatures were in the low 90's, but we were stuck standing around on the black asphalt with hardly any shade to be found. The first hour or so wasn't too bad, but thing got a little heated from about 3:30 to 6pm. Literally.
While everyone waited to enter the ballpark, the Savannah Bananas provided fans with lots of entertainment like singing contests, music, and interactive games. However standing around on black asphalt in the extreme heat really took its toll on us (especially me). There was a point where I thought I might pass out. Thankfully after they opened up the gates... we found a place to hang out in the shade and cool off.
However before we went into the stadium, we grabbed we some Banana merch:
After recharging our batteries, we started walking around the stadium and eventually made our way to our seats:
It might be a little hard to tell... but we were in the last row of the upper deck. Even though I have been to this stadium before (back in the 90's), I didn't remember how steep those steps were. It kinda freaked my friend out. Outside of the Star Spangled Banner and a few tributes... her butt was firmly planted in her seat.
Now if you've never heard of the Savannah Bananas, they are baseball's version of the Harlem Globetrotters. It's baseball with a bunch of gimmicks built in to make things fun and interesting.
Here's a quick look at how things are different from the baseball we're familiar with:
One of my favorite moments was the baby race right before the bottom half of the first inning (skip ahead to 13:30):
Oops! I got a little ahead of myself. One of the things I was most excited about were the special guests the Bananas bring out. The first special guest was Southern California native and 2004 Heisman Trophy winner: Matt Leinart...
One of the quirky rules is that whatever the person throws (ball or strike) actually counts in the game. Leinart pitched the football for a strike.
If you aren't familiar with Leinart, he spent most of his NFL career on the Arizona Cardinals as Kurt Warner's backup.
Here are a few of his rookie cards of his that I spent almost an hour looking for:
2006 Topps Total #484
2006 Topps #354
2003-04 Collezioni Firenze Campioni di Futuro #57
Assuming this YouTube video works, here is Troy's at-bat (skip ahead to 1:36:00):
2001 E-X Behind The Numbers #NNO
2003 Upper Deck MVP Total Bases #TB-TG (#'d 060/150)
In addition to the special guests, it was really cool to see all of the trick plays during the game... and entertaining events in between innings. They went above and beyond to highlight the kids in attendance and get them involved.
But ultimately the Savannah Bananas are about baseball. Here's a peek at this year's team set of trading cards:
A huge thank you to my bestie for taking me on this awesome road trip. During this hectic time of the year, it was nice to relax and not think about projects, grades, field trips, dances, or graduation. Instead it was a day filled with fun banter, tasty eats, lots of shopping, and one of the most entertaining sporting events I have ever attended. Hard to say whether or not this was truly the best day ever... but it was definitely one of the best days in recent years. Thanks Jennifer!
The set was $15 and contains thirty-four cards. Most of the checklist is made up of players and coaches.
Here's a closer look at the front and back of a player's card:
2025 Choice Savannah Bananas #16
At first glance, I thought this resembled one of the mid 2000's Topps flagship designs. However I wasn't able to find any matches.
The back of the card features career stats, a fun fact about the player, and their social media accounts.
My favorite card is easily the team mascot:
2025 Choice Savannah Bananas #34
As for the rest of you...
Have you ever attended a Savannah Bananas game?
If not, does it interest you?
I look forward to hearing your thoughts down below.
Happy Monday and sayonara!
Sounds like a fun time. I think you are right about the cards - I see a heavy 2005 topps influence
ReplyDeleteI've read lots of articles about the Savannah Bananas including one very long one here at work about 15 minutes ago. I'd like to go to a game, but I think one time would do it for me. The fan interaction thing sounds like something I'd want to avoid -- one of my favorite things about going to a ball game is that you get to sit and relax for 2-plus hours. Banana Ball seems to be ENERGY ALL THE TIME, which would wear me out.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had an awesome day. No, I've never even heard of them, but would certainly go to game if I had the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteAlways wanted to attend a Bananas game.
ReplyDeleteGotta get me some Bananas cards.
Goid Job! ✌️
Looks like the 2005 Topps set. I've got to disagree with "bunting sucks" - bunting for a hit is still one of baseball's great plays. The rest might be fun though. Glad you had a great time!
ReplyDeleteHa! It's funny - I watched that exact game on Disney+ last night! Glad you had a great time!
ReplyDeleteI've heard of that team, the game looks like fun. Kind of reminds of some of the schticks our St Paul Saints would pull before they became a farm club for the Twins (I was actually chosen to wear a Velcro suit and hang out on the right field wall. If I caught a ball my whole section would have won a prize, but a storm rolled in, so I never got to wear the suit).
ReplyDeleteAs others have pointed out, the card design is 2005 Topps inspired, but the image frame is rotated 90 degrees so that the 'tabs' are top & bottom instead of left & right.
ReplyDeleteBananaball seems like something I should check out, but I might be satisfied going just the one time :-)
I wish they traveled north yo see them but time will tell
ReplyDeleteGlad you saw them....I got a last minute invite to their game in Reno last Friday but couldn't change my plans and get up there in time. I think the foul ball stunt is pretty cool, if a fan catches it and the Bananas are in the field, it's an out! And they bring them on the field post inning-end and celebrate him/her!
ReplyDeleteHave not attended. Really wished they'd been able to get into the Coliseum to compare the crowd with Fisher's usual disaster. While my guess is that I wouldn't enjoy the game as much as I'd want to (I have a feeling that they work better in tiktoks and short video moments) I wouldn't turn down a chance to watch. I very much appreciate that they exist and are having fun with the sport. They're definitely pissing off the right people.
ReplyDeleteNice with the merch. Sorta curious what kind of baseball they use. As other have mentioned here, the cards are 2005T inspired. I like the changes Choice has made to simplify the overdesigned elements on Topps.
Glad you had a fun time. Also glad you got to witness Troy Glaus have more hits this year in Angels Stadium than Anthony Rendon.
ReplyDeleteThat looks so fun! So jealous and glad you had a great time!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteLeinart's a good get for first pitch thrower. The most notable I've seen live was Julie Foudy at a Padres game.
I haven't been to any Bananas games.
Oh wow, I'd never heard of the Bananas before but I'm really interested now - that looks like a lot of fun. (shame we don't have an equivalent here in Japan!)
ReplyDeleteLol I was at that game I too was in the 500 'so section small world
ReplyDeleteVery cool, glad you got to experience that and enjoy it. 90° would have made it a no go for me probably.
ReplyDeleteThat's great! My kids have been dying to see them. Overall sounds like a fun day, despite the heat!
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad you got to go see them as I've only heard great things. I hope they play closer to Michigan at some point (and then of course I'd have to luck out on getting tickets).
ReplyDeleteGlad you got to go to the game, thanks for the recap! I tried to get tickets for their game in Chicago in August but didn't win the lottery.
ReplyDeletegcrl - it was a blast. 2005 topps sounds right. thanks for confirming.
ReplyDeletenight owl - yeah, once might be enough. i'd consider going again if the conditions were right (like it was at the oakland coliseum in early spring when it's still cool). as for energy, you nailed it. you could sit back and relax... but everyone around you would be jumping around :D
johnnys trading spot - really? i figured you would have since they're from your part of the country. i bet your grandson would have a blast
john sharp - they have the cards on their website :D
bo - lol. i grew up watching billy ball, so i appreciate the bunt as well.
matt - that's cool that they're featured on disney+. hopefully it draws more kids into watching baseball and collecting baseball cards.
crocodile - oh man, that velcro suit and the right field wall sounds fun. sorry you didn't get a chance to actually participate.
shlabotnik report - thanks for confirming it's 2005 topps. yeah... it's definitely a novelty thing. if i don't ever go again, i'll be okay. but if it comes back to the bay area (specifically the oakland coliseum)... i'm tossing my name into the hat
poison75 - if they haven't done so already, i'm sure they will eventually. there's a lot of money to be made :D
mr haverkamp - hope you get a chance to experience them again. yeah... that foul ball rule is cool, but i didn't realize it was only when the bananas were on the field.
nick vossbrink - i'm really hoping that they come to the coliseum, because you know a's fans (plus all the giants fans) will come out to see them. not sure if they were official game balls, but they were selling balls at the souvenir stands. didn't pick one up to feel the difference though.
zippy zappy - lol. that's a great piece of baseball trivia (unless you're a rendon fan) :D
sumomenkoman - it was a blast. it wouldn't surprise me if they made their way across the pacific. it'd be interesting to see how japanese baseball fans would react to the different rules
elliptical man - did foudy toss/kick a soccer ball? that would be pretty cool.
sean - like i was telling ryan, it wouldn't surprise me if they eventually went to japan to play a game or two.
dominicfdny - wow. awesome! were you roasting in the sun before the game? or did you premium seats in the shade?
billy kingsley - i hear ya. i'm a low 50's to low 60's kind of guy.
the lost collector - yeah, the heat was brutal. so glad that we found shade once they let us inside. hope you're able to take your kids one day
dennis - i think they sell some tickets online (the nicer seats). i feel like the lottery were for the cheap seats. i could be wrong though. hope they make it up to michigan for you and stuart
jafronius - if you have friends and family who would be willing to do it, i'd recommend having them all submit their names. originally i purchased them for my friend and her mom... then transferred them into her name.
