First off... thanks again to everyone who took the time to comment and participate in my annual summer contest. After seven weeks, over 50 people participated and 37 of them had their names entered into Random.org this morning... some more frequently than others.

So as you can see... Martyn had his name entered 36 times, dawgbones 35 times, Ryan G 34 times... and so on... and so on.

I apologize for the delay… but today was crazy. I originally thought that my TA’s would be able to read your posts in the morning… but between report cards, a little party, clean up… and finally award certificates… it didn’t occur until after all of the students left… which was well past 3pm.

PC Addition - Brett Favre Autographed 8x10 Photo

Brett Favre's agent, Bus Cook answered my prayers yesterday and reported "Brett Favre retired in January." "He's retired, period".

If it's true... I'll be the happiest Favre fan in America. It was sad to see him leave the Packers organization on those terms... but it was frustrating to see him play with the Vikings the past two seasons.

But what's done... is done. Aaron Rodgers had proven to be the future Packers leader and has already brought another title to Title Town.

And assuming Favre stays retired, I can go back to collecting Favre cards and memorabilia without wondering if he'll throw another touchdown pass against his true team... the Green Bay Packers.

I actually just picked up this 8x10 autograph off of his official website for $44.44 (+ $6 shipping & handling).

He must be flooding the market at those prices, but I don't care if his autograph values drop... because I have no intention of ever selling it.

By the way... all autographs purchased from his site include an 4x6 photo of him signing the autographed item and a COA with a matching hologram.

Okay... now it's your turn.

I'm going to try something different tonight and allow you to show off your creativity.

Your assignment is to write a Brett Favre poem using 30 words or less. It can be a haiku, rhyming, or any other poem of your choosing. Everyone who takes the time to write a poem (30 words or less) will receive two points for effort, so there aren't any losers.

Plus, I'll have one of my TA's from summer school pick and rank his five favorite poems. His favorite will earn 5 extra points, second favorite will earn 4 extra points, third favorite will earn 3 extra points, and so on... which means you have the opportunity to earn up to 7 points for your creativity.

Since my last day of summer school is on Thursday, I'll have him read them that morning... so the deadline to submit your poems will be Thursday morning at 8am (PST).

Don't worry... I promise that it'll be judged based solely on entertainment value... and not on your actual opinion of Favre.

Contest Update

Wow... it's crazy what one Sunday evening baseball game can do to our contest. The Blue Jays 3 to 0 win over the Rangers caught a lot of you (including myself) off guard... as you can see by the "contest within a contest" results:

As you can see... Dawgbones, Martyn, and mmmrhubarb capitalized on this mini contest and each added four points to their total, while Baseball Nut, Spiegel83, and Play at the Plate each lost five points.

Professionally Graded Cards: Your opinion?

Congratulations... Pat Gillick, Bert Blyleven, and Roberto Alomar on being enshrined in Cooperstown. Its what millions of kids hope to achieve and only a few accomplish.

Up until this week, I hadn't heard of Pat Gillick... but he's guided two teams to three World Series Championships.

Blyleven started pitching before I was born, so by the time I began recognizing his name on cards... he was already an established veteran. However, I never took the time to collect his cards because there were so many other pitchers from his generation that I was fascinated with: Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Jim Palmer, and my favorite of them all... Steve Carlton. I think the only card I have of Blyleven is his 1971 Topps rookie card:

He finished his 22 year career with 287 wins (27th all-time) and 3,701 K's (5th all-time). One of these days... when the HOF hype is over... I'll go after a memorabilia card and an autograph card to create a trifecta of him.

And finally... there's Roberto Alomar, who started playing at the peak of my collecting (for investment) years. By the time he had finished in 2004, I had stopped and started collecting again more times than he won a Gold Glove... which was ten times. Alomar was an all-star 12 consecutive years from 1990 to 2001, because he could hit and field... and was very consistent.

His rookie cards were produced in 1988... which was towards the beginning of the junk wax era. You can find his 1988 Donruss rookies for a quarter if you look hard enough. But his 1988 Score Rookie/Traded card is a different story. In the early 90's, this set was hot... especially the Mark Grace single... because of perceived scarcity. I flipped through an issue of Baseball Cards from 1991 and found five vendors selling the set... the lowest was $65 and the highest was $79.99.

I was fortunate to pick up a set when they first came out... but I didn't pick up a Alomar's 1988 Score R/T single until a few weeks ago.

I paid $17 (plus shipping & handling, which was probably around $2 on COMC) for this PSA 10 copy. These days, you can find sets on eBay for $12 to $20... and raw copies of this card in the $3 to $8 range. A PSA 9 graded copy recently sold for $8.20 (+ $2.50 shipping)... while a PSA 10 sold for $37.50 (+ $2.50 shipping).

Which finally brings me to today's topic:

What's your opinion of professionally graded cards?

I know that there's a lot of people who like them... and there's probably just as many people who don't. I personally have never sent anything in to a grading company, however I will pick up graded cards here or there if they're affordable and if it makes sense. I go back and forth about the protective casing. Sometimes... I like the idea that the card is sealed. But other times, I think it's cool to be able to touch the actual card.

As of today, here's my take on graded cards:

A. If I decide to ever submit a card to PSA or BGS, the card will either be vintage (to verify that it is authentic and hasn't been altered) or from a condition sensitive set (like the black borders from the 1987 Donruss baseball set).

B. I'd never submit a newer issue to be graded, since these days... most collectors handle their cards carefully. I have picked up a few graded copies of recent issues... but they were PSA 9 or 10 and were cheaper than the cost of ungraded copies (it's a long story... but there was a vendor on COMC, who was dumping his port at ridiculous prices).

C. I would only consider purchasing graded cards from PSA or BGS. If I did pick up a graded card from a different company, it would have to be cheap as a raw copy... and I'd probably end up popping it out of it's case.

D. I have purchased a couple of PSA/DNA encapsulated & authenticated autographs of postcards too... but once again... only if the price was in the same range as raw copies.

E. When it comes to my graded card collection, there's a minimum grade I'm looking for...

1990's - PSA 10

1980's - PSA 9 or better

1970's - PSA 8 or better

1960's - PSA 7 or better

1950's - PSA 6 or better

F. I know it sounds like I have a bunch of graded cards, but in reality I have less than 100 in my collection. Since I don't store the majority of my collection at my house... I don't know for sure... but my guess is that it's more in the 40 to 60 range.

I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else has to say about the topic.

I'll have to check into my finances to see if I can afford a new one. Until then, I'll be posting everything from my desktop... which means that I won't have the flexibility I had before.

Domo Arigato: Captain Canuck & All About Cards

If you walked into my office right now, you'd think it's the middle of hockey season. On my desk I have a couple of Sharks team sets, two huge stacks of hockey cards, a few NHL rookie cards, and a cool National Hockey Card Day set. And they were all free of charge... prizes from contests I entered over at Captain Canucks' blog - Just A Bit Offside and Baseball Nut's blog - All About Cards.

Both of these guys have twice as many followers as I do... so there's no doubt in my mind that you've heard of both of these blogs. However... if you haven't... you'd be wise to head over and check them out.

Okay... onto my winnings. I'll start with the Captain's package... since I received it a few days ago. I apologize for the delay, but today was the first opportunity I had to open it... and it was well worth the wait. He included the following:

1991/92 OPC Inserts Shark Set

These were some of the first San Jose Sharks cards produced during their inaugural season. I only recognize a few of the names, but the Link Gaetz card definitely stands out... since he was a great fighter and one of my favorite Sharks from that first season.

2010/11 UD National Hockey Card Day Set

According to the Captain, these cards were distributed in Canada in packs of three... and you could only get one pack at a time... unless you knew someone. Well... I'm glad I know him... because I now have a sweet set that features a cool rookie card of Taylor Hall and a bunch of other veterans and HOFers.

In addition to those two sets, he also threw in some PC cards and a 1991/92 wax pack of Skybox basketball. I'm excited to add all of these cards to my collection and very much appreciate the generous Stanley Cup contest, Captain Canuck.

Although my San Jose Sharks failed to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals again... I must admit that the NHL playoffs were very good to me in other ways. The second NHL Playoff contest I entered was over at All About Cards.

After he randomized a bunch of names, my name came up third... which meant that I won this huge lot of 2010/11 Donruss Hockey:

The only card I need is card #20... Joe Pavelski.

Thank you so much to both of these excellent bloggers. I have to admit it's a great feeling to win something in a contest... which is why I'm looking forward to giving away all of my prizes next week. But before I do... it's time for another contest within a contest.

On Sunday, Bert Blylevin, Roberto Alomar, and Pat Gillick will be enshrined in Cooperstown... the same day the Toronto Blue Jays will face the Texas Rangers in Arlington. Since Gillick and Alomar won back to back World Series together in Toronto and Blylevin pitched his only MLB no-hitter as a Ranger in 1977, I figured I'd focus on that game for our contest.

By the way... it's my 300th post and it's fitting that it's a "thank you" post, since this blog would not exist without all of your support. So... although my original goal was to thank Captain Canuck & Baseball Nut for their generous contest winnings... I also want to thank each and every one of you who's taken the time to read this post or any of my other posts.

The fact is... blogging is awesome. I've made a bunch of friends here... traded with numerous collectors through our blogs... won some awesome prizes... all while doing what I love to do most... collect cards.

But at the same time... and all of you fellow bloggers know this... it's a lot of work to run a blog. Whether it's coming up with new writing material... doing research for articles... scanning photos... or (LOL) running contests... every minute adds up.

And although I've always told myself that I started this blog to document my cardboard adventures and I didn't care if I had any readers... I'm pretty sure I would have stopped a long time ago if nobody bothered to read my posts.
