A Little Mold, But A Lot of Fun

Last weekend my buddy and I went on a little road trip down to Southern California, where I picked up these three boxes of cards for $20:

There was a little bit of everything in these boxes: baseball, football, basketball, hockey, and even a little bit of mold.

Yup.  Mold.

Now, I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before... but I'm pretty sure I have a mild case of OCD and things like germs freak me out.  Anyways... I ended up throwing out several hundred cards that suffered from water damaged including a nice stack of mid 80's Fleer All-Stars.

Thankfully... most of the cards were okay and today I'm going to show of some of the cool cards I found inside of my flea market purchase.

I'll start off with some very cool additions to my 80's superstar binder:

The box had hundreds of 1988 Fleer baseball singles, but thankfully there were a few early to mid 80's base cards that I needed.  There were even a few cool rookie cards:

But my favorite out of the lot is this 1985 Donruss box bottom card of Dr. K:

I'm not sure why... but out of all of Gooden's photographs... this is the one that stands out the most when I think back to my childhood.

I also found this 1985 Topps Sticker of Gooden, Gwynn, Schmidt, and Carter:

It's the only Tony Gwynn I found in the boxes and as luck would have it... I actually need it for my Gwynn binder.

The oldest baseball cards I found were some 1972 Topps cards.  Here are the three that stood out:

Overall there weren't any highend baseball cards, but I did find a John Stockton rookie card:

And this very limited 1998 Skybox Premium Star Rubies rookie card of Hines Ward:

I'm a huge fan of Hines Ward, so this card alone paid for the three boxes.  But there were also a few more PC items I found.

The previous owner must have collected heavily in the 90's, because there were a bunch of late 90's football rookies.  As a Packers fan, I was happy to see a huge stack of Charles Woodson rookie cards:

And I guess I'll close this post out with three of the nicer looking Brett Favre inserts I discovered in the boxes:

Overall, I was really happy with this purchase.  It's a shame that a bunch of the cards were water damaged.  On the bright side... this flea market find helped me fill in some pages to a few of my binders.

Tomorrow I'll be headed to my first local flea market in nearly two months.

Brady, if you're reading this... De Anza is tomorrow.  Interested in going?

Happy New Year!  Happy Friday and sayonara!

Some nice pick ups. You hit up a lot of spots that I attend. The flea market in Saugus is close to where I used to live.

That must have been a ton of fun to go through, I would have tossed the moldy cards as well.

That Hines Ward would probably go for a pretty penny if you chose to sell it but even though I am not a fan of his, I would probably keep it too - it is a great looking card and a good memory about the purchase.

The 85 topps sticker is a great pickup. Love the 72's

Hey Fuji-please tell me De Anza is weekly? If so I will be heading there the 17th. I drop you an email when we get closer. Maybe some Fuji luck will rub off on me.

Unfortunately... De Anza is only the first Saturday of the month. It's probably a good thing that you didn't make the trip though. It was insanely cold and less than half of the usual number of vendors showed up. There were a few card dealers... but they're the same guys who will be at Serramonte later in the month. Any chance you'll be going to the show?

Bummer-about the cold-I am going to be at Serramonte if it kills me-I will see you at the dime boxes and will have some cards for ya
